Iwata Asks: Platinum Games and The Wonderful 101

Ahahaha, I like the bit where Kamiya looks on Yamagami with new eyes:

Iwata: Even with this project, where so much was decided in the very beginning and it looked like things would progress smoothly, it appears that there were a lot of things happening during the final stage of the development process.

Kamiya: Around that time I found out that Yamagami-san was the one who created Tetris Attack16, so in a way that was breaking news!

Iwata: Was it breaking news? (laughs)

Kamiya: It was a huge surprise! I'd always loved Tetris Attack, and I used to play it a lot when I encountered some turning points for me. It was like a dream to be able to work on something with the person who made it.

Yamagami: (laughs)

Kamiya: I acted differently towards Yamagami-san after that. If he'd only said something sooner...

Everyone:(laughs)

He's right too, Tetris Attack was amazing.

Kamiya: Right. So I was surprised. This should have been obvious, but I was a little surprised at how human you guys were.

Iwata: So your original image of Nintendo was of something that wasn't human? (laughs)

Everyone: (laughs)
Amazing. :lol

Kotaku: BREAKING Clueless guy that directed Bayonetta thinks Nintendo is inhuman.

I kind of wish the original proposal had gone through just so Platinum could have made a game with the attention of a real Nintendo game, plus Nintendo could probably use another high quality crossover game to join the ranks of Smash and Kart.

This also makes me wonder if P* might not be developing a Nintendo franchise in the near future...

I think if P* are ever going to get the reigns of a Nintendo franchise, it's going to be starfox. Unless they don't get given a choice of what they want to do, which I can't imagine happening.

Iwata: There's also a mode to satisfy all the users who are confident in their skills.

Yamagami That's right. We've also prepared a really hard mode that should probably be called 'A challenge from Kamiya.' How hard is it? Probably only Kamiya-san and the super debuggers from Mario Club are able to beat it.

Inaba: No, Kamiya can't do it.

Matsushita: It was so challenging, I asked Kamiya-san to help us out with the debugging process, but he said he couldn't do it.

Everyone: (laughs)

Incredible stuff :lol

Best Iwata Asks

I do wonder who the heck are these people at Mario Club. Their insane playthroughs of levels in NSMBU are mind-blowing.

Awesome. I love how Inaba often chimes in with a "huh" after Kamiya says something lol. Also the "Kamiya does his selfish thing, and then everyone jumps on board" was hilarious. Its like Inaba knows Kamiya is a genius but is also a selfish, immature, sometimes lazy manchild that needs to be yelled at every now and then lol. I love how the staff put in The Wonderful Director as a way to make fun of him/show their love. Also this must have been a really tough project for Nintendo, who always builds core gameplay concepts first. Just a great interview. Now for the brutal wait!

Edit: Also, I can't wait to see what is the Nintendo like level in the game.

Anybody ever read this things and imagine how funny it'd be for Iwata to just get up in dem bitches faces with a couple jive congratulatory F-bombs, drop a few gang signs and peace out with an unprecedented announcement/partnership?

I really hope the Nintendo/Platinum relationship continues and either Platinum makes another new IP for Nintendo or they are given the reigns of one of their franchises such as Star Fox.

If I had to guess, Nintendo found the best of the best gamers in Japan and hired them. Their job is to play video games all day and try to break Nintendo games and find bugs, which has to be pretty tough given the level of polish in Nintendo games.

There are 4 levels of gaming skill.

Beginner
Advanced
Pro
and then you have Mario Club.

Knowing the insane shit the Mario Club can pull out in NSMBU, I can't even imagine...

It gets to a point where they clearly broke a challenge, and they just leave it like that because why even bother..

I think this speaks volumes for how he was treated at Capcom too.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I'm hoping that this relationship will press on after W101 and Bayo2 releases. They really should be the ones that give StarFox the over-the-top action game revival it deserves.

There'd probably be some fucking great dialogue in a P* developed starfox game, I know that much.

I'd love to see some sort of rail-shooter/action game hybrid.

Yeah, Iwata Asks are always so good, but this one was a real joy to read. Kamiya's already so funny and interesting to read on his own, so him with Nintendo is just incredible. Definitely hope there's more Nintendo and Platinum teamups in the future. Starfox, Takamaru, new IP, whatever, I'm sure they'd all be great

What in the name of FUCK. HOW. That's Matrix-level reflexes. Are we sure they do that at normal speed? Are we s- they do, don't they?

And they said there's a difficulty level in TW101 that only Mario Club can beat? God help us all.

OMG I can't even... how awesome is that?

Loved the interview. The part where they say they thought NIntendo would come with statics and stuff and were surprised because Nintendo is more human than they though. lol

Also, big balls to include Multi Unite Morph in the last minute. Kamiya does seem to have luck in his favour with his games! Love it! ^^

Yamagami Matsushita-san loves action games, so I showed it to him, and asked, "This project will be really interesting. Won't you work on it with me?" And right away, he said something like "The images are too dark. Elementary and middle school kids won't go for this."

Iwata Did you say that right away, Matsushita-san?

Matsushita I did say that. (laughs). I was convinced we had to change it. But I couldn't just say "This looks way too much like a dark comic book, so this is no good" to the guy who already made a game in that style, could I!?

Iwata That would be quite rude, indeed! (laughs)

Matsushita I'd heard that the folks at PlatinumGames were very particular, so we had a lot of discussion within the company about how we could get it across to them, and whether we should just prioritize PlatinumGames' concept and move forward with it.

Iwata But in the end, it was decide that in order to have it reach as many people as possible, you would need to change the visuals.

Matsushita That's right. And I figured, "We just have to be frank with them and ask."

Fucking Nintendo. This is why people were/are so worried about Bayonetta 2.

Jesus fucking Christ. Who are these people?

Its seriously new thread worthy to get a discussion going about the Mario Club. They have been given special thanks for every EAD game for like 20 years, and no one knows who these shadow people are.

Fucking Nintendo. This is why people were/are so worried about Bayonetta 2.

I don't see what the problem is? The game has its own unique look, what's not to like?

Not everything has to have dark visuals and plus Kamiya already made a game like that (Viewtiful Joe I'm guessing)

Kamiya seemed okay with the change, and B2 looks fine, from what we've seen of it.

Edit: short hair>long hair

I honestly can't imagine this game with a gritty, realistic style

The tokusatsu and toy figure aesthetics just seem like they would have been born naturally from the idea of playing with 100 heroes

It must have been a completely different game

If Nintendo was responsible for that, then they are awesome.

Yeah seriously. Excellent call.

Wish someone was there to sort of reign in Anarchy's art direction. Game is fun as hell but it seems like such a clash and mash up of different styles.

101 is probably platinum's most aesthetically cohesive game since Bayonetta.(and possibly even moreso than that game. I haven't played the full version yet) If that was due in part to Nintendo then I'm even more happy about this partnership

Fucking Nintendo. This is why people were/are so worried about Bayonetta 2.

the Project started as another Nintendo Universe Mario All Stars are you not happy it changed?

read the first page again about the Project that got shelved for a while

Project P 100 was going to be this since they took it to Nintendo of all people you cannot expect Dark

Matsushita With a situation like that, including this would be a plus for the game no matter how you thought about it. So I thought "We've just go to go with this."

Inaba ...sorry about that.

Iwata When did that discussion get moving?

Matsushita During one of the recurring debug meetings, I heard "We've actually gotten a request from Kamiya, and it's already built in." And we were like "Huh? What did you just say?"

Yamagami When we heard about it, it was already included in the game.

Iwata This is getting crazier by the minute! (laughs)

----

Inaba Usually with a huge change like that, he would have come to show it to me first. Like, "Is it okay if we add this?" But none of that happened with Multi Unite Morph. I found out about it through a different channel after the fact, so I flipped. I hadn't been angry like that in a while. I was like, "How could you do that now!?"

poor Inaba

those two are like an old married couple

sounds like this was a very difficult Project for Inaba

You have your answer right there, Nintendo ninjas aren't used just for guarding their secrets.

Reading this, it really does feel like there's some magic between P* and Nintendo. I hope their collaboration continues.
I think regardless of the outcome of these games, we will see more games for WiiU fron Platinum. Nintendo often works with studios they like over and over.
