Yeah... I wish more companies would do this kind of thing... The best interviews I guess would be conducted by the CEO, no "I can't comment on that" type statements, and also more deeper secrets and lost documents.jamesinclair said:What's amazing is that I can't think of any other company, in any industry, where the CEO and President of the company is so visible to the public like this.
No, it's run by one guy who frantically searches everywhere for news to post. I used to visit the site exclusively, but I found that I was always missing out on non-Nintendo news.Zilch said:Haha, shit, they link to this thread on NeoGAF instead of the actual Iwata Asks page. :lol

The original style?trinest said:I know it gets results- after all I'm here
In all seriousness though this seems pretty interesting, I'll read more into it after I wake up- but still, its Pokemon- the only critsims I have is they should include all the zones in one game and that they should go back to the original style- a Pokemon "Zero" as it would be called![]()
You know GB brick graphics, sound etc. God that was the prime of the series and you know it- G/S/C where the best and R/B where not laughing matter- everything else isn't Pokemon in my eyes.ShockingAlberto said:The original style?
We put Mew in right at the very end. The cartridge was really full and there wasnt room for much more on there. Then the debug features which weren't going to be included in the final version of the game were removed, creating a miniscule 300 bytes of free space. So we thought that we could slot Mew in there. What we did would be unthinkable nowadays!

But this remake is pure gold.

This is also bad either (edit: also bad either pfft). What's so bad with retro graphics? What makes them inferior?Zilch said:Primitive graphics and sounds don't make games better either.
This retro-fetish needs to die.

I think Mega Man lost something when going above 8-bit.upandaway said:This is also bad either. What's so bad with retro graphics? What makes them inferior?
I hate both extremes of this argument. God dammit guys.
Right. But then due to an unforeseen bug, Mew ended up appearing in some players games. It looked like we planned all of this, but that wasnt the case. So although it caused all sorts of problems to many concerned, fortunately enough it ended up having a positive effect.
Didn't run out on me yet. Hell I just got done with Red today again. It's not really 'backwards' either unless they specifically pull out features (Megaman kept all the features and added more), which is about as nuts of an idea as publishing such a game in the first place.ShockingAlberto said:I think Mega Man lost something when going above 8-bit.
I don't think Pokemon has lost anything (except speed, but Platinum and HG/SS are making progress on that) as the graphics have changed.
Ergo, I don't see the need to go backward except to push a few nostalgia buttons for a few hours.

Ishihara:
I remember thinking that there just werent that many people out there who would be able to read the entire Game Boy source code, which was by no means written in a highly-refined programming language, and grasp how everything connected with everything else. So Iwata-san, you analysed the whole thing and reworked the code, decided on the way to localise Red and Green, got the battle system running on N64 I was gobsmacked that you managed all of that
Yes... this.ShockingAlberto said:I think Mega Man lost something when going above 8-bit.

Chittagong said:I wonder if Iwata-san is related to Kim Il Sung. After all, he is the world's best painter, hits only hole in ones, writes awesome books, and rules a country as well.
Zilch said:Because video game graphics are about representing another world and conveying a sense of believability of that world. Unless you want the world of Pokemon to seem less immersive, retro graphics don't serve any purpose.
In addition, retro graphics in new games are nothing more than a cheap appeal to nostalgia. 8-bit graphics and sounds aren't "better" -- they're just what 20-somethings remember from the "good old days" and they've come to (falsely) associate that aesthetic with quality.
I'm absolutely not against retro graphics, though, if they serve a legitimate purpose. There are lots of games being made now that have minimalist aesthetics where blocky, abstract, "retro" graphics are appropriate.
Iwata: It was great fun to witness those scenes of everyone trying it out. It really did turn into a gathering of people all saying: The power of science is staggering! (laughs)
Whoa, wait, what? Just went from a "eh, I'll likely pick it up" to "must have".Why would you do that? said:Oh. Real big spoiler alert for HG/SS:Yes, I know HG/SS has the above feature, which is freaking amazing, but it was something I've dreamed of since before HG/SS because I love 8 bit music.

People still release games like that all the time on XBLA, PSN, and Steam. Why would you do that? said:Nice Iwata Asks!
I love Iwata's hidden programming expertise. Ported that messy Pokemon source code in a week.
Reasons like the Mew thing makes me wish that we were still developing games with the mindset of that era... with very small teams of programmers, scavenging for as many bytes as they can... and also making snap decisions for the fun of it, like including Mew.

GCX said:"Yamauchi Asks". Now that would be something.
I would imagine that, if he were to do an Iwata Asks on Kirby (like the Kirby series), he would chime in a lot. However, I feel like that Iwata partially does the feature for his own amusement, and simply speaking about Kirby wouldn't be something amusing for him.Andrex said:I REALLY would like an Iwata Asks but with Iwata answering the questions.
