[Iwata Asks] THEATRHYTHM Final Fantasy

as per other thread, i bought this today - but what i thought was going to be a long night is going to be a VERY long night.

Will let you know how it goes (the game, rather than my boring works stuff! ;) )

DCharlie, have you been able to access the DLC at all? I only see a blank page when I connect.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy might be a big hit for Square Enix. GetNews reports the Nintendo 3DS game flew off store shelves and sold out as soon as shops opened.

So, S-E... we good to go then for NA?

Port-begging being allowed should be decided on a case-by-case basis, so I can make posts about this coming to PSVita without risking it.

Seriously, the game doesn't look so hot, but the idea of FF music game is glorious. Can't wait to hear your impressions.

Stealth port begging? Not cool dude!

tied up with work, won't be able to check until about 2-3am.

Will try if i get a spare moment.

I am sure it will be, but I almost hope it's not released worldwide. The reason is simple: Downloading new songs will break my wallet. Normally I am able to avoid DLC but having heard things like Cosmo Canyon, I don't think I could this time.

Oh gosh, I'm such a Final Fantasy music whore. I'd have to buy every single song, regardless of whether or not I actually LIKED it or not. ;-;

All according to SE's keikaku. Next step, Romancing Saga Theatrhythm

I think next step would be Dragon Quest Theatrhythm

Even worse, they could totally bankrupt me and offer Chrono songs
and Xenogears, and Secret of Mana...

I wouldn't necessarily say that, until somebody tests it. Thus far, it's been possible to buy games from the Wii Shop Channel at a physical location out-of-region, given import hardware.

Yeah, but thats with prepaid cards and whatnot correct? What are the payment options with the ingame shop? CC only? and does it even let you use nintendo points?

CC transactions aren't region locked on the 3DS plus I'm sure the ingame shop would be tied to your eShop wallet anyway (MM9's shop worked that way on the Wii).

Really? So I could actually buy stuff off the jp 3ds eshop right now with my US CC?

I think so. I know I can buy stuff off the UK eShop with my Aus DC or at least I could when the eShop just launched (things may have changed, I don't know). There's only one way to find out.

WOW so the sell out is not to be proud of 30-40 k is very low for a FF title, but as it was a sold out in the first day of sales maybe will have reprints faster =c

We do not know how big the shipment was, but it has been said the shipment was "low". I don't really know how low or high it has to be given it's a. 3DS b. S-E game. Maybe 200K is low. Maybe 300K. Need to wait for MC thread next week.

Well, I've played through the story mode for all 13 titles. The arrow markers are very particular about how you slide the stylus, and they often crap out before you even begin to slide.

I was a bit dismayed that the first and last songs of those I'd listed on the last page are not of the type of gameplay shown in the trailers and demos, but rather a simple game of tap when each note reaches the crystal in the middle of the screen for bonus Rhythm Points -- your overall quest progress stat. They have zero bearing on your overall ranking for the story mode session, and can even be skipped.

That said, it looks like there's quite a bit tucked away to unlock. Enemies and other characters you encounter show up in a card album. The FMVs and songs gradually get added to the gallery. Additional "playable characters" apparently get unlocked after collecting enough crystal shards following game sessions. Challenge mode offers individual song sessions on easy and normal difficulties thus far. The Chaos Temple contains pairs of difficult songs that apparently aren't available in story or challenge modes. Thus far, I've seen Mambo de Chocobo from FFV and Those Whom I Must Protect from FFIX. You must clear one of these challenges before opening up the StreetPass feature. Once you do, you can exchange custom profile info, game stats, and a Chaos Temple challenge.

DLC still appears to not be up yet, so I can't comment on that yet.

One other note: the music player in the gallery has slots for 77 tracks.

Hmm... so there's no straight out Hard difficulty available? I was hoping there would be. You'd probably have to unlock it by playing through other difficulties, I assume.

From this, if I wanted to play difficult songs, I could only do it in the Chaos Temple? And only select songs? Not sure how to feel about that. Hopefully there's a Hard difficulty to be unlocked as you play, so I guess I'll withhold most of my judgment for now.

not played much so far but liking it a lot :) Hoping the difficulty picks up as it's a bit on the easy side but game has a lot of charm and i love the art style.

The side scrolling segments make me wish for some sort of Castle Crashers/FF/Dragon Buster mash up with leveling and RPG style bosses.

Was pretty on the fence about this one - glad i jumped in so far. And yeah, after being unable to get into the store, it works fine this morning. Surprised to find i had loaded my wallet so could download a track :D

The hard difficulty for each track is unlocked once you clear medium, as you guessed.

Odd, I've still got nothing...

No The Landing or Force Your Way?

I'd have preferred The Oath.

I guess I still don't understand the clamor here. Aren't all the levels just recordings of the OST music with either a video of previously released content playing in the background or some Flash game looking battle scene as what basically amounts to wallpaper? Hasn't everybody already heard this music many, many times over the years? I mean, if it was all fresh remixes of the old tunes, that would be one thing. But it's not, is it?

Assuming this gets a US release I will specifically buy a 3DS to play the living hell out of this game and will also buy every DLC. Ouendan style gameplay with FF music is the sweet spot for me right there.

I agree. Cant wait.

Now if I could just find another game like the Patapon series.

Sad (?) thing is, I'm going to do exactly the same. Game is Day 1 + all the absurdly-priced DLC.

Looks pretty good! The world needs more Ouendan-style games. The amount of my money this game's DLC could consume is a little scary.

I think I have literally only purchased about two pieces of DLC -- ever. If/when I get this game, I'll probably end up buying at least half of it. I'm a bit scared.

Gamekult.com Import Review

Square Enix does not hide it, the promotion was also centered on this theme: Final Fantasy Theatrhythm plays the nostalgia card, a chance to tremble again on these musical themes that shaped our player's lives, and our lives at all. Far from the feared trivial marketing product, this music game is served by a properly balanced and very catchy gameplay, probably the mark of the small studio Indies 0. We hoped for a bigger story mode, or a bigger music catalog to avoid falling back on the DLC. But by uniting music and Final Fantasy, Square Enix offers a hypnotic nugget which will please the fans of the series as fans of rhythm games.

+ clever gameplay
+ cult musics
+ an attractive RPG packaging

- reprehensible DLC
- repetitive
- it takes ages to unlock any bonus

7/10 (editor's pick)
