Iwata Asks: Wii U

We've known about this for a while, comes with every Deluxe set. Don't know if it's being sold separately, but I wouldn't use one anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow. Somehow, that piece of info passed me by.

This is quite sweet:

Shiota: I always play video games with my children. With Wii U, you have a screen right there in your hand. You may notice your children hiding it, and be like, "What're you doing?" and try to look, but they'll be like, "No, I won't show you!" I feel like this will increase the amount of conversation that takes place. (laughs)

These in-depth Iwata asks are strangely fascinating.

How does that front flap thing work though? Does it fold inwards over itself? I can't tell from the pictures

will Sony do that as well though? Don't remember first gen ps3 being easy on the outlet.

Nintendo cares much about Japan than Sony does. Also Sony is known for their high end products, so they aren't really trying to cater to some conservative Japanese family worrying about the energy bill

Low power consumption is becoming increasingly important especially in Japan so that's why they are going that route.

no place more obvious than in shibuya station where they pulled down the poster holders and replaced them with 60+ inch LCD screens....

oh wait.

or at Ebisu station where the advert boards are being replaced with jumbotron screens
or at Tokyo station which has projected holographics
etc

Setsuden has started to fade away.

I think it will work like these kind of doors.

Well I guess someone in Japan would have more first hand knowledge, but from all the reports I had seen it was becoming a bigger and bigger issue. Is the issue just being overplayed in the media, or is there a disconnect between large cities and rural areas?

well just after the quake it -was- a big issue as we had daily bar charts showing where we were in relation to power capacity and everyone did their bit : lights were off, places didn't run aircon, no tv's running etc

but as time has gone on, it's just not there any more - the jumbotrons at Shibuya are back, the neon lights run all night again, the aircons are ramped up, then we have the frankly weird stuff like installing banks of TVs for advertising etc.

The situation is not as dire as it was just after 3/11 and whilst you still have some places that have "in the interest of powersaving, we are not running <these lights, this aircon, this service>" etc but it's rare.

It has left the public conciousness it would appear and power use seems to be back to normal.

Iwata You ran what's called an aging test.

17. Aging test: For this kind of test, a device tested under a load for a long time and its operation is checked afterward.

Akagi Yes. If you don't do that, defects will eventually arise when the product is in the customers' hands. Toward the end of creating the product, a lot of tests that take a long time are left over, so it took an extra long time to analyze each single defect.

Take a cue from Nintendo, Microsoft.

It's amazing how the Gamecube design philosophies are still carried on to this day.

Iwata: But the staff members who were thinking up the structure of the casing might have trouble staying motivated if told that what they were working so hard on what was no more than a "stagehand," so it must have been a quite difficult task.

Kitano: Yes. I could understand what Takeda-san meant, but for those in charge of it, it was a little cheerless and we went about our work solemnly.

Iwata: Solemnly. (laughs) Being a stagehand comes with its own kind of pride.

Kitano:
Yeah. (laughs) And the Wii U has the GamePad, so we adopted a policy of drastically reducing the characteristics of the main console, causing it to stand out even less. (laughs)

Man those guys are total dicks to that team
KuGsj.gif

Solemnly indeed.

Akagi: I worked on the SDK18 and absolutely love CPUs! (laughs) So I myself have been happy to see how far game consoles have come. I hope people will be impressed by the types of software enabled by the CPU.

Hmm, maybe the CPU won't suck after all?

I wish other companies would do this kind of interview. I'd like to see how these companies differ in philosophy and how it affects the end product.

But wait, GAF told me Nintendo was lazy. And that was the only possible reason for basically everything they do. What is with these guys talking about all the work they did?

Nintendo lying to our faces yet again. Shameless.

They're researching more ways to maximize laziness efficiency

The Wii U seems less absurdly long after looking at the transparent shot--they've essentially crammed the entire console behind the disc drive.

Nintendo is cheap, not lazy.

Well except when it comes to NSMB. Then they're both.

They didn't tell us, but these 4 people are actually the only people who worked on the design of the console. They were too cheap to hire more help.
