J.J. Abrams says Star Trek the game 'arguably hurt' Into Darkness...

He tried to get CBS to stop their advertising and producing of TOS merchandise because his researchers found it caused brand confusion. People cant tell the difference between William Shatner and Chris Pine. He wanted his universe to be the only one.

Now that's really fucked up.
What a scumbag.

I didn't hate the first movie but I found all the stuff that only made sense if you read a comic to be infuriating. I was optimistic with the sequel as they were free to do whatever they wanted but they chose to do a piss poor WoK ripoff.

The movie was decent. Not amazing but I enjoyed it enough.

If I had to complain about anything it would be about the fact that they couldn't go for 2-3 minutes without something "important" happening, whether it was explosions, a heated argument, or an emotional display of some sort.
I don't really blame that on Abrams though, it's the fault of our A.D.D. generation. Totally aware they could not make a big new Trek movie and pace it the same as the 80's/90's films because it would be a colossal failure (money wise), so I accept it for what it is because that's all we're gonna get.

It's the reason I don't even bother with Hollywood anymore beyond the few decent pics they manage to get out. The blockbusters have all become schlock.

Well when Iron Man 3 made 1.2 billion and you haven't crossed 500M I guess you could consider that a "failure".

God I hate the Iron Man films with a passion too. Honestly, this has to be the Dark Age of film in Hollywood. I can't even imagine what they will be crapping out in 10 years.

Abrams had something special going in Super 8 but that film kind of went lame in the last half, showing too much monster and way too many effects. He really isn't very talented imho.

Seems pretty lame to trash the game like that, even if it was bad. I don't know anyone who skipped the movie because they heard the game sucked. Most people assume movie tie-in games will suck anyway.

The movies themselves are good, dumb action flicks. Disengage your brain and you'll have a good time watching them. That's a little disappointing for fans of the TV series, but at least the Abrams movies are well made. The Next Generation movies were hot garbage for Star Trek fans and general moviegoers alike.

Seriously, GAF is just weird like that. They sometimes adore crap and hate decent things.

Can you people stop talking like this is some hivemind where we all come to say the same thing for every film? It's not even remotely true unless you maybe only read the first couple of posts in a thread.

And that's why so many people think it was a bad Star Trek movie. There are some truly awful pre-2009 Star Trek movies but they were generally at least somewhat intelligent, internally consistent science fiction.

Plus I hate the whole 'switch off your brain' argument. What passed for dumb action flicks back in the day look like Shakespeare compared to the glossy shit they pump out now.

...what?

I am a huge Star Trek fan and I happen to think that Into Darkness was a fantastic film that did the Star Trek Universe well. It had the right mount of action along with the right amount of story. People who hate on it are too fond of themselves and are not comfortable moving outside of their box.

So to the original question; did the official game hurt the movie? No, I don't think it helped, nor hurt the movie. The game was garbage to begin with. Who in their right mind wants to play Kirk in a third person shooter. Now with that said, I gave it a shot anyway because as I said above, move out of your box and don't be so narrow minded. Even with giving a fair shot, I still think it would have been best if the game had never existed. The movie was phenominal and I even bought the Blu-Ray with all of the fixens with it.

Bottom line, people need to stop hating on new ideas in classic universes. Into Darkness was a great fit and I look forward to another entry into the series.

I saw Into Darkness for the first time yesterday. My immediate reaction afterwards was that it was both excellent and horrible at the same time. The inconsistencies of the film really broke my immersion while watching, and as I think about the film afterwards those inconsistencies eat away at the plot like a cancer. Still I have to admit it was the most fun I've had watching a film in a while so I guess that makes up for it.

I do have a limit as to how much of a dumb film I'll accept. For instance I feel the need to punch anyone who says the Transformer movies were any good. I don't know why I am so willing to give Star Trek a break, but not other films.

Star Trek 09: I don't think you know what you're doing, Kirk, but I'm going to trust you!

Oh, Kirk is actually awesome!

We are like a family!

Now we can go on missions together!

I agree 100% with you but beware of pitchforks and torches. :)

i didn't think it was terrible but Into Darkness was one of the biggest letdowns i've seen in awhile. i just kept waiting for the thing to be over. assuming they're going through with a third movie i hope they do a proper autopsy on what went wrong, and not blame it on bullshit (and before you say it was the writers or abram, ST09 was pretty good for what it was, or at the very least it was a much better move that Into Darkness).

would be great to see a good new Star trek game, maybe an RPG or something. won't hold my breath of course

I hate when people speak as he does. I hate the pauses, the "Ums", the "Uhs", the "You Knows", etc.

I had to stop listening. Please form a complete sentence

Sounds like a lot of people when they talk. Hell, listen to the President speak sometime. It's "um's" and "uh's" every few seconds.

Uh....well a lot of people take like this you know. I think it may ummm....be a sign of intelligence.

I haven't seen Into Darkness, but the movie has an 87% on Rottentomatoes which is pretty high.

Is it really that mediocre/bad? Were critics overrating this film?

What were the new ideas? The plot was barely different from the previous movie on top of being a retread of Wrath of Khan.
Didn't it make more money than the first one?
Worldwide yes, domestic no. Considering it had 3D I assume they expected more.

Not a sign of intelligence.

Maybe I'm a stickler. I am a regional trainer where I work. I present my training/speeches in a clear and precise manner.

Or maybe I am an old shit who was taught to speak with out fillers.

Also, I hate you now apana.

Into Darkness was awesome. It, and Pacific Rim were the most fun I've had in the theater all year thus far.

The Star Trek game was no doubt a mediocre cash in. People that were hyped for the movie may have got the game and it turned them off of it. I can see Abram's perspective there.

the only overreacting is coming from miserable people on the internet who are looking for a target to project their frustrations on. The movie is fine.

Ugh, why do people have to do this?

You liked Into Darkness? Good, great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hated it - I didn't go in wanting to hate it, I didn't watch it looking for plot holes or inconsistencies at every turn, I just genuinely thought it sucked. Can we not just agree to disagree? Can you seriously not allow that people out there have an opinion different than your own?

Yeah I felt the same way. It's a really fun, fast paced action sci-fi film. It's an awful Star Trek film and if you're a big Star Trek fan you'll find lots of problem/flaws with it.

I felt the same way about the 2009 film too (though I thought it was a little bit better) so I wasn't surprised Into Darkness was the same.
