Wrong demographic :lol :lol :lol
Judging from the posts in the thread, I figured as much, but then again there's also been MoMusu, Ayumi, and Koda Kumi references thrown in as well so whatever. ;)

HAL-FREAKIN-CALI - It's kind of hip-hop with Japanese girls, but it's awesome. Baby Blue is my favorite.

Utada Hikaru - generic choice, but she's really talented and has a beautiful voice.

pillows - awesome J-rock, popular for FLCL.

misono - I only like a few of her songs, but the songs I like are pretty good. More J-rock.

Maaya Sakamoto - again a very pretty singer, also a protege of my favorite J-artist, who is....

YOKO BLOODY KANNO - not really a singer, but the best damn composer in the world. Seriously.

1.Shiina Ringo
2. Shiina Ringo
3. Shiina Ringo
4. Salyu

Shiina Ringo's voice may not be suitable for everyone, but I absolutely love her. Her songs are so funky.

Salyu is a bit like Bjork. I first heard her singing in the All About Lily Chou Chou movie, and became hooked ever since. You can totally understand why she's the 'Ether', if you've seen that movie =P

hehe, well, they're alright, but the vocals never did anything for me. I turn to DA PUMP for all my boyband needs.

I don't listen a lot of J-music, but these are my current favorites:

L'arc en Ciel - Awesome carreer with all their albums going from awesome to very good, my favorites are definitely Dune, True, and Ark.

Sex Machineguns - Heavy Metal as it should always be, fast, catchy and fun.

Seikima-II - Almighty fathers of J-Metal

the pillows - what else can i say, with kickass albums like Please Mr. Lostman or Little Busters you can't go wrong with them.

X-Japan - Blue Blood is one of my favorite albums ever; Yoshiki is probably the best Power Metal drummer and Hide's solos are always beautiful and epic. I can easily place them among the best HM bands at the same level of the Maidens, Priests, Rays, etc.

Melt Banana - Melvins+Sonic Youth+steroids= them. The best way i can describe them :lol

Bonnie Pink - One of the best female voices in any language, period.

And some others like Monoral, some Orange Range stuff, Beat Crusaders and Megumi Hayashibara, Intestine Baalism...

M-Flo in the house!

And bleh to Hamasaki, glad that Hikki finally usurped the top single/artist role in current jpop history. Go Utada!

Now there ya go. M-flo is my groove

I've been on a m-flo high again for the past few days. I can't stop listening to their song with Minmi. The video is cute as hell too. :D

m-flo loves MINMI - Lotta Love

Does anyone have an mp3 of the reggae version played in the middle of the video? Does one even exist?

Hrm, I think I'll limit myself to folks that have released stuff recently.

Bump of Chicken - http://youtube.com/watch?v=jRz8Bkw5HNs
The Brilliant Green - http://youtube.com/watch?v=F8fGU7WEa5s
Bonnie Pink - http://youtube.com/watch?v=XkBpouFudjM
Kozue Takada - http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sax8-EHONEg
Rie Fu - http://youtube.com/watch?v=m6WUthOgrwI
Sambo Master - http://youtube.com/watch?v=zLyDrZ16tWk
Crystal Kay - http://youtube.com/watch?v=D_mTeOvh340
Homemade Kazoku - http://youtube.com/watch?v=3JDYbGDHtNU
Chemistry (song with Crystal Kay) - http://youtube.com/watch?v=UWP2augHWYg
One for Chemistry by themselves - http://youtube.com/watch?v=e7hK1SyHlwo

On that note, Crystal Kay needs a US tour >=(. It's almost a crime that she isn't known here because she's so damn good.

Glad to see that I'm not the only person that thinks this. :D

That's the most unfortunate headline+picture combination I've seen :lol

I hope her career isn't too damaged after this. I love her :(

*joins the fun*

MMm I listen to a lot of Jrock... indies, major, v-kei, angura/erogura-kei, whatever

Sex machineguns, breakerz, rentrer en soi, diru, Maximum the hormone, Last Alliance, Gazette, Takui, 100s, etc etc

as long as songs aren't boring/generic I'm in!:D

for me l'arc = hit or miss, some songs are sooo boring while others are so awesome.

As for jpop and japanese dancehall/reggae uhh I listen to Crystal Kay, Juju, DOUBLE, lecca, Fire ball, Tommy february6, Miura Daichi, Color, Ryo the skywalker, AI...etc =)

World's End Girlfriend
"100 Years of Choke" from the album, Hurtbreak Wonderland (song runtime - 13:22):

Kashiwa Daisuke
"Stella" from the album, Program Music I (song runtime - 35:58):
Code:

^replace the two x's in the hxxp

Both of these are easily made my top ten favorite songs from '07 list. I don't go out of my way to listen to any J-Pop or what not, but somebody here in OT had listed Program Music I as one of their favorite albums from last year. After giving this guy a listen, I did some searching for him using the Google Blog engine and came across both Daisuke and World's End Girlfriend in a blog called "I'd Rather Be Fat Than Be Confused". The only other post-rock band I know of besides these two is Explosions in the Sky. So, if you like Explosions you might enjoy Daisuke and WEG.

Give DOLCE a shot. The first track is super hyped!

I really really like the first song.

I don't think this album will go into my regular rotation, but it's certainly miles and miles beyond her TK works.

I just realized I still haven't listened to her past two albums...

"women over 35 have rotten fluid in their wombs" wow...talk about saying things you might regret when you, say, turn 35. :lol

my favorite Japanese music (no jpop, sah-ree):
--Boris
--Melt Banana
--Guitar Wolf
--Nobukazu Takemura (and his alias Child's View)
--Boredoms
--OOIOO
--Satanicpornocultshop (yes, their actual name)
--Minamo
--Mono

but check it out, I've been listening to these groups for years and now I need suggestions. Starting to feel like a one note guy with my small, but varied list of japanese bands :lol

no j-pop suggestions please...unless it's experimental pop (female singers preferred.)

I'm not surprised Koda Kumi said something like that. She has this bitchy look.

She was actually really nice in person a few years ago :\ Has no problem saying what's on her mind though.

Has anyone listened to the new Utada album? I didn't even know there was a new one coming out until last night.

I've been waiting for it for a bit now but still I didnt find out until last month.

I am expecting good things but it seems half of the songs are already released as singles since she takes 2 years at least per album. Same thing with Ultra Blue.

Anyway my recommendation is:

Younha - Hakanaku Tsuyoku, pretty catchy J-rockish single.

Utada bores the shit out of me...

Unfortunately March is the month of compilation albums, so things are a bit slow right now. Can't wait for Younha's to hit though. Sure there's her K-pop, but I missed her ;_;

Has anybody listened to the new Rag Fair album yet? I have it sitting somewhere behind my couch, but I haven't bothered opening it.

It's a big disappointment for me. There is nothing special about it - no outstanding song.

imo

Good man.

I have all their albums, and my favourites are Tierra, True, Awake, Ray..

hell i love em all. But, Jojoushi, My Dear, Anemone are one of my favourite songs. Yuki no Ashiato from the Kiss album is a great track. Really highlights Hyde's voice aswell.

Can't wait for May 9th, they are doing a concert in Paris, and I am IN THERE. I will push past the rabid fangirls so i can get into touching distance.

This is making the rounds on all the J-pop boards, I figured it would do well here too :lol

JERO - Umiyuki

Edit: News report w/ interview

Wow.

There's one good song, but it cuts off in the middle... fucking stupid artistic bullshit.

Ok GAF help me out here I just want to expand my musical enjoyment. Now I typical spend my days enjoy classical, jazz(mostly world), hip hop, techno/electronic, & I'm a sucker for alternative rock. So if anyone can give me a few band/group names to start with it would help a lot. Please and thank you in advance :D
