J-pop star Ayumi Hamasaki is going completely deaf

Really unfortunate for this to happen to anyone, let alone someone whose whole life has been immersed in music. Not familiar with her work but I'll seek her out.

Reminds me of this movie, pretty much exactly:

I used to play one of her Countdown Live dvds in the anime shop all the time. She had like a fuzzy pink hat and a fuzzy yellow coat or something at one point? It was a fun show, at any rate.

Hope she can have a procedure done to restore her hearing.

Beethoven was deaf when he composed the Ninth. (Couldn't conduct it, though.)

Hopefully she can keep doing her life's work.

I don't know about "best", but here are some of my favorites.

Good playlist. In case some song is not working for you (End of the World said it was unavailable and I'm on my desktop. Not saying a region lock. Just straight up saying it's unavailable) just replace "youtube" with "youpak" in the link and you should be good to go. It probably is a region lock even though they don't state it.

Legend 😢😢😢

I never knew she was deaf in one ear at all. I'm so sad to hear this now seeing as she and utada practically brought me into j-pop. This is truly the end of an era 😔😢

never heard of her, but this sucks. She's not even old.

It happened because she failed to rest up after a bad ear infection apparently. That left her deaf in one ear and the other had to compensate, which weakened.

Take care of yourselves, folks. She ignored her doctor's orders and continue to tour.

Cant find any Japanese news oulets reporting this yet. Anyone have the actual text on her blog? Its members only.

Same here, still can't find any info at all on any Japanese news site, tv. News site, can't even find anything on twitter about it in Japanese. Only a few Asian newspaper sites and English jpop blogs. Nothing here in Japan, and this news was supposedly posted yesterday, so how come no one here in Japan is talking about it. It's a little odd considering the news is old. Should've been all over the net by now here.

I see the dumbest articles about her on a daily basis. It makes no sense this wasn't reported yet but there are articles about her weight and whatever.

I'm calling fake until someone posts the blog post.

Yeah right now I'm starting to question it too a bit. This blog post was from yesterday and no one in Japan is talking about it at all. Something isn't right. Hopefully there will be some more confirmation if it's true very shortly but considering it was posted yesterday we should've been hearing about this all over the news this morning. I'm hoping it's fake. But yeah something is definitely odd about the lack of any news about this at all here in Japan.

She posted about her injured knees to her 8 million followers on twitter and instagram but posts about going deaf exclusively on her blog the same day?
It makes no sense.

Im not even really a fan who follows her, but 10 minutes of google has me seriously doubting this news.

That's really sad. Is there no way to prevent this while allowing singers to do what they love? That's horrible, I really do hope the best for her.

I did a quick check on 2ch and found what could be the post but I don't know for sure. Hard to trust anything there and also the date was not the same either, it was listed as the 19th. Seems to be saying close to what people are reporting but the way it's written makes it sound like her ear is getting weaker but not deaf. So again I'm not really sure it's the real thing but a few people seemed to be talking about it but not much. Really it's a strange story right now. If true it's sad and a huge bummer. But without any real confirmation on what was said, especially considering her other posts that day, something seems off about this whole thing. I find the lack of news about it today makes it seem not as important as these few news sites outside of Japan are making it out to be.

If there is nothing about it on the morning news shows, the usual internet news sites, or the papers here tomorrow then maybe something is wrong with what's been reported. Maybe some are mistranslating what she is saying about her ear getting weaker as meaning she's going conpletely deaf. Guess we are just going to have to wait and see.

Unfortunately, this is what happened.
Health is the more important than career and money.

Well after waiting and checking the news this morning, there was nothing on tv about it, still nothing online, and as far as I know nothing in the newspapers here in Japan about this story at all. This should've been a huge story. Similar stories like this with even much smaller known singers make the news all the time and most of the stories don't wait for the newspapers

Based on what little info I can find (which is practically none, I can't even find any links to these Japanese entertainment sites the news reports say their info comes from) I'm starting to doubt parts of the story. Even my wife, who is Japanese, is doubtful of it especially reading the possible post we found via 2ch. She says the post (at least the one from 2ch) doesn't mention anything about going completely deaf at all in any way.

I'm starting to believe the story has been mistranslated, overblown, or something misreported cause the lack of any thing about this in the Japanese news world is highly suspicious now.

Was only a casual fan back in the late 2000s but sad to hear.

But yeah it was not on the news today here. Maybe it will be a nightly thing or the stations are putting together their usual style of "documentary" news reports with various quotes and clips / interviews with other celebs.

That is still a possibility and could happen as usual. Will be watching Fuji tv's newscast at five to see if there is such a thing. But if there isn't, someone's gotta figure out what the true story is cause it's all fishy at the moment.

This is absolutely horrible news. I used to listen to her all the time when I was young. Now that all of her music is on Spotify, I just started listening to her again a few months ago.

I can't imagine how she must be feeling. I hope she's able to still do what she loves.

There are stupid articles about her online today, just as there were yesterday and none of them mention anything about going deaf.

There is really no reason at all to believe this story at this point. Just more sensational fake news.

Yeah seems like whatever she said is being blown out of proportion by people outside Japan. And if what I saw is indeed the real post from her blog, it feels like that is the case. If that was real yeah she does talk about some problems but not going "completely deaf" like these headlines make it out to be. But yeah until I see a Japanese news source talk about it, I'm going to be skeptical. It's been way too much time since the supposed post on her blog for no news service to pick it up. And Japanese news loves to talk about every little juicy thing they can find on blogs or fan club sites or whatnot by celebs.

I had no idea that she was deaf in her left ear before now. I've listened to and enjoyed her work for quite some time. I very much hope that the situation is nowhere near as dire as that story suggests.

She has menieres a really bad case of it. The thought of losing my hearing terrifies me, I can't imagine how she's feeling.

It's been known for some time now that she went deaf in one ear and fell off the stage in 2001. She was told it was stress. The reason why it might not be all over the newspapers is because it's old news. There was a "documentary" about it years ago. Maybe close to 10.

Did she even write her songs? Im not sure but I always thought she was just a (well marketed and "produced) JPop star.

The opposite is true. She was more involved. Around the time she lost her hearing she had started composing her own songs (with help) in addition to writing her own lyrics. Apparently between this, concert tours, and fighting off attempts to end her career it was too much. It also explains why she seems to have struggled to keep in tune from time to time after 2001.

Funny enough I saw the movie Creed tonight, and the main character's girl is a singer going deaf because of loud noises at the venues in which she performs at

Yeah I had forgotten about her left hear situation before. And reading what little info there really is on this story, looks like her right ear is getting worse because of overuse of it but not necessarily going deaf. I'm hoping someone addresses this soon cause literally no one is talking about this story here in Japan. I think maybe some English news outlets got mixed up on the information. Whatever the situation hoping she doesn't injure her ear more. Hopefully it's not too bad.

It's a shame that this happened, but I can't help feel a little upset that she continued to push herself. I think she's significantly lost her ability to sing and I chalk a lot of it up to her hearing issues. She is so talented and not taking care of herself is inexcusable.

And even now she'll continue to perform! At this point, make hay while the making's good, but she's going to go out deteriorating.
