Jace Hall wants to develop an updated version of Blood

Why is this thread only one page long?

Because kids these days etc.

Based Jace will show them the path to enlightenment just so they can really understand what means getting BLASTED THE FUCK OUT in BB6: Twin Fortress or BB8: Fun With Heads.

Man, I miss the days when even a modest shotgun could put the fear of God into you.

PLEASE let this happen!

Blood was my first foray into level design and I'd love to see a revamp.

I hope this turns into a full-blown remake developed my Monolith, but an enhanced source port a-la ZDoom is awesome too.

But I just bought Blood through Good Old Games a few days ago.

Does it not work well enough? Or is this just for an HD remake?

You have to play in 640x480 to get a stable framerate and the mouse controls don't work very well, personally I don't think it's a big deal since the game was designed around a keyboard but if you're used to only playing FPS with mouse + keyboard it can be a bit jarring. This should run in high resolution and 120 fps with better mouse controls.

I've been watching videos of Blood and this game has so much personality. It got me thinking, has anyone made a sprite-based FPS in recent years? It'd be neat to see a FPS with sprite-based graphics like this, only HD sprites and obviously more complex 3D level geometry with more richly detailed textures and effects. (And of course, the great maze-like design and "no cover, all man" mentality of the '90s shooters!)

Jace Hall seems like a cool guy but he's had such a weird career trajectory over the last few years.

First he decided he was going to become a producer and worked on the recent V reboot that was on ABC (even had a producing deal with WB!) and then he decided he wanted to be an actor.

Last thing I heard he was presenting some show on Crackle or whatever.

Still good for him either way.

Fuck this world

Dear Blood Community:

I just got an unusually short, one sentence e-mail from Atari, letting me know that given the current set of circumstances, they are choosing to decline to proceed.

Obviously, I am disappointed. Particularly given Atari's continued encouragement along with the amount of time, effort and correspondence that I have put into this venture.

The only thing that can be done at this point is to wait and see what happens with ATARI, and hope that they find themselves in a position and mindset to allow my efforts to continue on this matter at a future date.

Tears and Sadness,
Jace Hall

I would prefer a full commercial release. Hearing him say it'll be "free" immediately makes me think of free to play crappiness.

I love the first game, by the way. It's one of the top 5 single player FPS ever, in my opinion. Multiplayer is fun too, especially as you can co-op through the campaign but single player, with its focus on exploration, is where it truly shines.

I'm ashamed to admit that I could not beat Blood. Couldn't even get past like the 5th level. I think it was a train station? This was the GOG version, and about a year ago. I wasn't bad at these games in my youth. I beat Duke 3D, beat DOOM, DOOM 2, Dark Forces, etc. My adult brain and hands found Blood impossibly difficult.

Really? I thought it's quite tame. Unless you mean the 5th level of the last campaign out of the handful.

I think it has the best atmosphere and coolest levels of all those old school FPS.

I like playing it more even though it lacks a modern source port.

Just read how to fix and tweak the mouse controls.

I don't believe it. I was literally thinking of this game earlier today. I'm in!

Continue reading the thread and prepare for disappointment. I wonder if now that Atari has seen there is some interest in the franchise they plan to do something horrifying with it.

Mouselook fixes already exist and work fine. Look up bmouse 0.6. Been playing with it since buying the game from gog.

Thanks for the info. I just bought Blood from GOG to try out bmouse, and it works very well. Any idea as to how to remap the right mouse button the alternate attack, though? I don't see any options within the game to change the mouse button settings.

You configure keyboard key and mouse button functions at the same DOS style interface you set the game up to use bmouse instead of the normal mouse driver, just a different option somewhere there. Something to do with mouse configuring I guess. I've got mine done the way you want so it's certainly doable, it's just been a while since I did the configuring to give details. But you can make it control like any modern fps for sure, absolutely nothing like the defaults that have you moving with the mouse.

Sorry for bumpage, but what with Atari selling off old IPs and all. I need this to happen. I'd willingly donate if the goal to purchase the IP wasn't insanely high :|

From back in May:

So anyway, I started to wonder if perhaps there might be enough interest out there in seeing this truly revived?

Perhaps its multiplayer BLOODBATH could even evolve to an eSport! ;)

Maybe someone should start a crowd funding campaign to gauge and prove interest?

You see, Monolith sold the publishing rights for Blood and its sequel to GT Interactive. GTI was later acquired by Infogrames, which has since been renamed to Atari. Over the last 15 years, Atari has been divided, bought, sold and reconfigured numerous times. Monolith itself was acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment, which now theoretically owns the Blood trademark and intellectual property.

But the truth is that the rights status and the entire history are a bit complex and basically there are around 3 people on Earth who truly understand that complexity, none of which are currently at Atari or WB.

Since it is my name and signature that is on all the Blood related contracts and deals - assuming a large enough crowd funding effort, I know I could help move the needle on this. But do enough people care?

Things that make you go hmm...
