Jack Bauer has sacrified a lot for his country

Him executing Ryan Chappelle was one of the most upsetting things I've seen on a TV show.

Probably my favorite scene of the entire series.

Ryan Chappelle was always sort of a douche but in that episode you felt really sympathetic towards his situation. First he tries to run away, then he wants to take his own life but can't bring himself to do it, then he's given the chance to say his final goodbyes to friends and family but he's got no one to call :(

All throughout the episode you're thinking that CTU will find the bad guy in time, or Palmer/Jack will never let this happen, or you're expecting some kind of cliche last second phone call to save the day, and it never comes. Dude is executed at point blank range, shot in the back of the head and falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes. That was so fucked up and such a dark ending. Amazing episode.

Jack ends up being such a pussy when he downs a bottle of pills because he doesn't want to live to see the world end.

The worst thing about the show was the mole inside CTU. It basically happened every season. In the third one, you start rolling eyes already.

But all in all, I really loved the entire series.

I should really get to watching this, are the episodes really an hour in real-time? Sounds really limited.

Yes, kind of. On television the episodes were, as the show said, ocuring in real time. This took into account the advertisements however of which there is roughly 18-22 minutes per episode. On DVD however, these obviously cannot be taken into account and as such every episode ends up roughly 42 minutes long and the ad breaks can be seen by when the clock appears, the screen goes black, and the clock appears immediately once more with a time jump. It isn't as limited as one would imagine however since, for the most part, the writers simply crammed the day with a ridiculous amount of content, everybody working at an unrealistically hyper speed. Season 1 is the most grounded in this aspect in that the pacing at large is much slower overall than the rest of the series and the time of the day has a more noticeable impact on the events of the story. Later on in the series, the time of the day is mostly ignored (with the exception of references to the time of course) and the pacing is consistently fast paced. Season 5 is probably the greatest example of this in which an absurd amount of investigation, assaults, back-up plans and terrorist threats occur in such a small time period (interestingly though, season 5 is considered as one of the best). For the most part, the time doesn't have a significant impact on the show's structure and is mostly ignored (car trips and the like being condensed to mere minutes to get from one side of Los Angelas to the other for example).

EDIT: Also, I must say, although I do miss the show with it serving as a decent 'filler' show so to speak, entertaining even though it probably was not particularly good in technical terms (the plotting being very problem) but I am glad it has ended. I really don't think I would have been able to get any more enjoyment from a ninth season. The show itself serves as a good stepping stone to a higher quality of programming; in that it was better than a significant amount of other shows that were on television at the time even though it wasn't one of the best shows there was itself and it serves as a good way to introduce those who may typically not have much of an interest in television shows to seek out the better ones that are available. It's part of what I find particularly disappointing about Homeland as it continues to become more similar to 24, I really don't think I will be able to enjoy another season of 24 under a different name. However, that should not detract from 24 itself as with 5 and a half (including the end of season 8) very entertaining seasons it is more than worth a watch I feel, just as long as you don't go in expecting something like "The Sopranos" or "The Wire".

RC: We don't have any outs here?
JB: Not that I can see. *racks slide on pistol*
JB: Sorry we let you down.

Such a hard-hitting exchange and scene and yeah the fact that up until then you're kinda always thinking "what a douche" then it all changes in a few minutes.

And watching how Jack took it and breaking down added to it all too.

I liked the series well enough, although it can get really really stupid at time (like Kim's plotlines where she gets into ridiculous situations back to back for hours). Don't think I watched season 8 though, I should get around to that one day.

Let's not forget Chloe, Jack's ever faithful computer hacker side kick. He couldn't have done half of those feats without her just in time help.

Great show that just ran for too long. After season 5 it just started to get old and repetitive. It still entertained and had some good stuff, but yea it should have ended sooner.

Well said. It's definitely my favorite scene in the series.

I HATED Chloe. She was the worst part of 24 for me. I kept hoping each season she would die and I was always disappointed when she didn't.

I have watched every season except season 3, plan on doing that soon. I really miss this show though, nothing like it on tv

agreed about the chappelle scene. it's funny how him and mason were such douches but had very heroic deaths.

Tony went out like a bitch though. and his resurrection (and subsequent arrest) was even more embarrassing. Show never recovered from killing off everybody in Season 5, even if that was a damn good season.

Agreed. Though the other seasons had their moments.

Even S6. (Though overall it was quite terrible.)

First half of season 6 is actually pretty solid until Curtis
gets his meltdown out of nowhere [killing him off just for the sake of killing him off, one of the worst moments in the entire series] and Jack's family comes and shits up the show.

I still haven't watched season 8...I don't know what happens in it, but I felt like Season 7's ending was the best way they could've ended the series, and I just don't want to fuck that up in my mind.

That's literally four episodes in. Then you have 20 episodes of unforgivably awful shit. I agree though, the nuke + Curtis' death was where the show officially crossed a line and no matter what new formulas they tried, new reboot, new locations, no sidekick, etc., the show was irreparably damaged.

Love this series to death but hate what it turned into. Renee was so, so bad. So was Jack basically turning into a complete asshole at the end of S8, badass or no.

Really wish more thought would have been put into the overall arc of the series but oh well, still fun.

Nothing like a 24 season premier!! It was the closest thing to a movie type premier on Tv. Especially towards the launch of season 5.

I'd take Bauer hands down over Bond, Bourne(or Cross) Carrie, or that dude from Sleeper Cell. Should you doubt this remember 5 simple words...

It was truly remarkable how little of a fuck Bauer gave in S2 coming off of Teri's death.

Still holding out hope Fox will resurrect 24 for a 9th season. Jack vs Behrooz

That moment was so badass

Season 5 is my favorite

Season 3 is my least favorite (1st half sucked, Palmer storyline sucked, Chloe sucked, Nina brought back was a mistake, Wayne Palmer sucked, Kim/Chase love plotline....bleh, I could go on)

S1 and S5 are the best. S2 and S3 are damn good too although they have problems. S4 isn't bad just a bit odd at times, S6 is underrated imo but still average, S7 was a nice return overall. I liked S8 too

IMO the show greatly harmed itself by killing off so many characters early. It had such a nice cast early yet by the end there were only a couple familiar faces.

2 & 5 mayne.

I do agree that they killed off way too many people

What was the season where the terrorist's wife/mother gave that amazing performance and Jack landed an airplane? Four? That was good.

Season 5 was terrible. Nuclear Explosions and throat eating in the first five episodes. That sounds awesome, but it wasn't.
