Jack Tretton video interview with BusinessWeek

gamers buy games,
gamers buy didigital downloads
gamers buy DLC add-ons

casuals buy 1 or 2 games are year and stick with it for a whole year than shelf the unit like a boardgame and only buy another game in 1 year or so

"We were in this space before Microsoft and we may be in this space after Microsoft. We've seen competitors come and go."

Feisty!

Deirdre Bolton: Are people actually going to be able to get their hands on it before November?

Jack Tretton: Oh people will have opportunities to play it enough. The thing that I just wanted to emphasize--again--we're not trying to sell it tomorrow. There will be multiple unveils. Our biggest industry event is E3 coming up in June, and there will be a lot of playable content on the floor. It's not a consumer show, but consumers will get their opportunities to play before it ships.

Deirdre Bolton: All right. So at least some people will be able to tryout some of the new features.

Jack Tretton: 'Most' people will. Believe me, we know who our consumers are, and we're going to get the machines in their hands.

This stood out to me. What could they mean? Probably just shop demos. I'm excited!

I believe what he says, sign of a good PR man.

Probably in stores or something, that's all I can think of. Or maybe he means the hardcore-hardcore go to gaming events and will be able to try it, a far cry though IMO.

Why do they compare the lowest priced Wii U SKU with the higest priced PS3 SKU?

The interview was great, can't wait for April (MS) and E3.

Seems like he's talking directly to GAF.

It's gonna become very jarring when/if MS comes out with kinect2 being the major focus.

Jack went HAMMY on that interviewer.

Thank God this interview didn't have any references to "checking boxes", multimedia, and motion gaming.

Also I think this "we are going after the hardcore gamer" message is really smart. Not because that is all the PS4 is going to focus on, but at the launch of a console, when the box is at its highest price, and there are the least amount of games... who buys the box... the hardcore gamer. So who does Sony need to convince now... the hardcore gamer. They can shift the message to "motion this", "touch that" later once the price is near $200-300.

Some people don't seem to understand this and feel this will be their ONLY strategy. Next gen could end up being being longer than this one. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes beyond 2020, they have plenty of time to try to sell to everyone. It's smart to go after the core early who would most likely be the ones to adopt at launch.

goddamn, how did they get so smart? o_O

the focus on gaming, and hardcore gamers, is a message i'm seeing through and through whenever they talk PS4. i love it.

Good, good, good.

I'm so glad that somebody in this industry can still be bothered to cater to me.

I really liked the interviewer. It was clear that she got the gaming business.

Yea, she didn't sound like an idiot. As for Jack, he nailed this interview hard. Everything he said was good music to my ears and he came off very confident to do work and just get stuff done with the PS4.

She asked better questions than gaming journalists....wtf
And she's probably not even a gamer but it sure as hell seemed like she was in that interview.
She did a great job as an interviewer, she seemed informed and interested but still brought on the hard questions w/o being cynical about it.

Jack did great answering them. Loving the focus on hardcore gamers. Hopefully this isnt just the focus RIGHT NOW and hopefully
they dont do a major focus shift during E3 - Launch date.

Deirdre Bolton: Jack, Sony took a little bit of heat with the PlayStation 3 with the pricing ($600) and especially [even now] Nintendo has the Wii U out for $300, so it's significantly cheaper. I know not all the games are the same, so there's a lot of arguments to be made between those two price points-----but PlayStation 4, can you launch something that costs $600 in this current environment?

Jack Tretton: Well, I really think the last 5 years for us has been talking to the development community and trying to build a machine for them that will give them the tools to create the greatest possible games. I think we showed a lot of that last night. We also spent five years listening to consumers finding out what they wanted, and we're very conscious of the price value equation. We're also proud of the fact that the PlayStation 3 is currently available for $249, so it's a marathon and not a sprint. But we pay close attention to the consumer needs and wants and the price value.

probably the most interesting bit in there.

games journalism is a joke. the only people who discussed PS4 on podcasts I've listened to with any succinct insight aren't even game journos (8-4 play + tested)

They probably have a feeling that Microsoft may go for casuals to try to get in more homes and continue to try to appeal for them since they are the bigger market.

I'm thinking the focus shift is because the Wii U has completely bombed, so far. They see that casual/recreational gamers arent reliable. They'll hop from 1 experience to the next. The hardcore gamer is the 1 that will stick around, buy the games, play the games, be apart of the community, and buy the DLC. They probably see microsoft going after the recreational gamers and view that as a dried up well, or one that is drying up.

Most of those gamers are probably gaming on cell phones/tablets and I think Sony see's no point in trying to replicate those types of games/experiences on the dedicated console (which would make them direct competitors to cell phones/tablets) and are banking on the possibility of those gamers wanting MORE and will then be interested in consoles that offer "bigger" experiences.

but none of them had to interview jack on live TV, either.

MS has a far better shot at the casuals due to subsidized hardware+huge multimedia focus+kinect . Sony and Nintendo are far better off going after hardcore games first and then when the hardware prices are down they can release casual games as well.

Its sad that I was about to click back but then I read that last bit so I watched it.

It was actually a good interview and handled well by T-bone. Everything he says speaks to me so whatever happens with the PS4, I'll be there day 1.

Well, not day 1, but he is definetly speaking to me. I find it very reassuring.

Translation:

so we will start the price just low enough that one job should do it.

$579 confirmed

But I don't know and I would rather they get rid of any doubt soon because the thought of it is really keeping me from getting excited about the console.

Honestly, let the info settle. We still have two major events to be excited for. GDC and E3. After E3, you'll have your answer.

Nope. It's a question that needs to be asked and it isn't.
You think Sony would answer lol? The only response you would get is "we are not talking about this right now". Same with pricing and everything else. This doesn't even have to mean anything bad.

We've sold 30% more consoles this generation as opposed to the previous generation.
What? Didn't PS2 sell like 120 million and the PS3 has sold 80 million or so? I don't understand this statement at all.
