Jade Raymond (Ubisoft): "Innovation is not necessarily driven by teraflops alone"

She's not wrong about innovation coming from lower-budget indie titles but it's weird when she immediately transitions into a plug for the seventh console entry in a AAA franchise that has become another third person shooter with chest-high walls everywhere. Congratulations Ubisoft on getting your multimillion dollar game into the press again, I guess.

Yeah, the plug for Splinter Cell was a bit ham handed. I'm not going to prejudge the game, but thus far it seems like another attempt to resurrect a dead horse for another beating.

It is weird that most AAA leads are aware of the indie scene but don't take many lessons from it. Blockbuster titles, except for very few more auteur games, are very one note, high action focused. Give me my quite moments and more cerebral mechanics.

"With Splinter Cell Blacklist, not only do I think that the team is delivering the best stealth experience of this generation...

I believe I recall seeing sam kill about 2 dozen guys in that first look at blacklist. I wonder if this woman has heard of dishonored or the new thief game?

As far as I can tell, blacklist looks like a linear assassin's creed with guns and explosives and gadgets and not as cool terrain traversal.

Is wearing two wife beaters and a blouse normal? (maybe I'm seeing the outfit wrong?)

I guess I shouldn't pick on her, she seems like a nice person and I always liked her.

Try and resist that urge you had in the crocodile t shirt thread because you don't understand something. Thanks.

Yeah, it really is weird for her to talk up one of her products. Who does that sort of thing?

None of the footage I've seen of the game so far would lead me to believe it's a stealth experience at all.

I saw a PAX East demo which indicates it can be a big part of the game if you want it to be. You can hide in the shadows, etc. Not sure if that video has been released, but it's certainly interesting.

Not alone, no, but it is quite a big driving force. More power = better physics, destructibility, grander scale, bigger world size while still preserving detail, number of NPCs (think huge armies). You can simply do more interesting things.

She's dead wrong about Splinter Cell Blacklist though. Game looks like shit.

I agree that it doesn't look innovative at all but I wouldn't call it shit. Seems on par with everything else this gen for the most part.

Perhaps not unexpected but it's strange that she'd not think before creating such an awkward juxtaposition. It's like she's admitting her game is not driving any kind of innovation but saying that's okay because it's still a game.

well when you're trying to make a point about something, it does kind of cheapen the whole thing.

If you read what she says, she's saying the next splinter cell is innovative.

I think that our console generation is already capable of giving game designers the right amount of power to design pretty much what they want (except large scale scenes with millions of different actors in scene, but can you name me a book with over 10000 different characters?) (except Dante's Divine Comedy).

The next gen is just candy for our eyes, The next part in gaming design is putting the design workspace frome the TV/Console to the Player itself (aka virtual reality). but it's something at the very beginning.

edit: didn't realize you guys were talking about Jade. How in the hell she's so photogenic and hot in every photo? daaaamn!

True but more power is sometimes needed to show your innovation off better with less limits.

Except a lot of innovation happens because of constraints.

Take the constraints and limitations away from someone who was previously innovative and you get the Star Wars prequels.

"With Splinter Cell Blacklist, not only do I think that the team is delivering the best stealth experience of this generation, I also think that we are delivering a completely new multiplayer experience. Hopefully unique gameplay is still something that can make a game stand out.”

I know she has to be positive, but I still laughed.

Wow! What a blindingly obvious insight.

Wonder how many hours of pondering and deep thought it took to come up with that?

I'd say innovation is destroyed by conventional game producers right now... Just like Hollywood has significantly gone worse since the 90s...
