Jak and Daxter: The Last Frontier (preview and pics)

Fun demo. Breaking it down between parts:

Jak gameplay:
-platforming and shooting aren't as tight as they were in Jak 2/3, but still nice
-like what I saw of the upgrade paths for your abilities
-camera might end up being a problem if things get too hectic later in the game
-city gameplay seems like a toned down version of what was in Jak 3. No vehicles, but still the find orb challenge saround
-no ducking or hoverboard from what I can tell, and it makes moving speed seem slower than usual
-graphics are nice

Dark Daxter:
-um, nicest thing I can say is that after the negative previews, I expected to hate it more
-not awful
-not really entertaining either
-so, kinda feels like a waste of time playing it and I hope it doesn't take up too much time

Plane combat:
-reminds me of Crimson Skies on the Xbox (a good thing)
-not much else there other than getting a feel for the controls, but I'm surprised. I wanted to play more of it.

oh, and it seems fine on PSP. So, I'm probably getting it on that instead of PS2.

y'know what? i really didnt expect to like this as much as i did. the demo was a blast to play. for added giggles, go to the secrets menu, and read the descriptions. those guys have a sense of humour :lol

Linkzg's impressions are pretty much similar to how I felt. I thought it was quite fun. Jak parts felt good. The Danger Course thing was fun. I do miss the roll jump which seems to be absent though that's kind of what expected since people said that before. The city seemed pretty cool. The upgrades with the different ecos could be pretty neat. Camera was a bit messy. During the first forest part it kept pointing at the ground too much I thought. I realize Jak never had an up/down camera (more of a zoom in/out thing If I remember right when pushing up and down on the right stick), but the camera in the trilogy gave you a better view ahead. Otherwise I liked the Jak sections. Overall, it didn't feel as tight control-wise, but still pretty good.

No complaints about the flying sections. Pretty fun stuff though I don't play many flight games so I don't have much to compare it too. Plus, with all the customization options should be a nice section of the game. The Dark Daxter sections were pretty meh. I hate the concept and dialog. The gameplay isn't bad as I thought it would be, but it's just not very fun. Also felt really chaotic. I just kind of went through as fast as I could.

So, outside of the Daxter sections should be pretty solid based on the demo. Looking forward to getting it. Also, I saw the descriptions you are talking about V_Ben. They were funny.

The game isn't as bad as the previews sounds. There were some positive previews, but the negative previews seemed to come from people who don't like the Jak series and were expecting a Daxter like experience.

I guess I'm odd man out. Just played the demo and as much as I wanted to like it the camera issues ruined it for me. In the shooting gallery test the camera was simply too annoying when you cannot really see where you are shooting or jumping. The entire time I kept wishing for a second analog stick.

It really is too bad, because they were close to making an actually fun game.

The menus and stats are completely slick, I have to say. The flight portion was a joy to play, and I found the camera about as obtrusive as that in the original J&D, which is to say it sometimes bugged me, but didn't entirely interfere with the experience. The only time it bothered me was in the gun course, where you could take a side-path for more points. At the end of it I knew there must be a platform below me, but there was literally no way to look and see (unless there's a free look option somewhere I missed?).

The Dark Daxter section wasn't actually all that bad. Not as good as the rest of the game, of course, but it was okay. Surprising.

I like seeing that there are lots of secrets (and yes I unlocked the goatee+mustache - can't wait to get Sasparilla Vision!), but am very sad to see that they don't reflect in the cutscenes, whereas I'm pretty sure they did in the other games. Of course, given how good the cutscenes look in this game, I suppose that's my answer as to why, so there's an upside to this.

The humor is as fantastic as ever, and the voice-acting is superb. My favorite quote so far is "Haha, the jokes on them; if there's one thing we're good at, it's arbitrary platforming challenge fixed with heavy gunplay." :lol

Just how short is this, is all I wonder? :-/

Also, this game will clearly not be too polished. I encountered a few odd bugs, and there were some things that bothered me (it kept making the running sound when it would show me the orb search thing, for example). On the whole, I'm very happy, and thing I'll enjoy this more than Daxter at the very least.

Try punching to move faster, it's what I've been doing :lol

Jak 3 amounted to

jump -> spin -> yellow gun

Game was so fucking easy it was absurd.

And they fucked up the ending to their own game.

Bastards.

After playing the demo I'm pretty surprised how well it played. My only complaint is how the camera just swings so fat with the shoulder buttons and I hate how Jak will do this weird march in position when you stop running.
