Sure Avatar made a lot of money but it was mostly due to spectacle, it's hard for me to find someone in real life who gives a shit about it anymore. Maybe Cameron should worry about movie #2 before he's worrying about movie #5. Setting himself up for a possible trainwreck.
 
I never seen Pocahontas or Avatar, I can't wait to wait until all the sequels come out so I can watch it all at once.

I did the same thing for Lord of the Rings and it was amazing.

And you know this how? Lots of movies are big spectacles and none of them have even approached 2 billion, let alone 3.

Besides, he could make an even bigger spectacle now and if that's all it took to make 2.8 billion dollars then the next one will surely make 4 billion.
 
Universe with psi-linking biological species on a distant sentient moon with 1000ft tall trees, super-conducting floating mountains and a bunch of future human tech and spaceships - all of which we've only seen a fraction of, can't possibly have any further potential for exploration. Let's all just start jerking off over the latest generic looking Jurassic Park cash-in or adaptation of 20 year old comic book storyline.

(yes, I know it's unfair to hang the entirety of a movie's failures on the guy that wrote it, but... that is a not good resume)

It might have potential, but the existence of a rich world doesn't mean the narratives within it are automatically good.

Interesting - I didn't know that Salerno fellow was working on one of the scripts. Yea, he doesn't have the best resume. While my comment was tongue-in-cheek, but I could see a writer like Lindelof working on an Avatar movie.

Shane Salerno is one of the CO-writers. Cameron had already written a huge new story bible outline for every film, then hired the (four) new co-writers to brainstorm and further develop with him those stories for all films, before then assigning each of them the specific screenplay to work on WITH himself, and is thus serving as a co-writer on every script.

So you'll see Avatar 2 have screenplay credits for Josh Friedman and Cameron.

Avatar 3 will have screenplay credits for Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Cameron.

Avatar 4 will have screenplay credits for Salerno and Cameron.

So I wouldn't worry too hard about Salerno, since anything he writes will have already been informed by those months upon months of collaborative work between all 4 other writers, and then anything else he commits to the shooting script is going to have to pass through the filter of Cameron.

Here's Cameron explaining the process himself a while back.
We tried an experiment. We set ourselves a challenge of writing three films at the same time. I knew I could certainly write any one of them but to write three in some reasonable amount of time – we wanted to shoot them together so we couldn’t start one until all three scripts were done and approved. So I knew I was going to have to ‘parallel process’ which meant I would have to work with other writers. And the best experience I had working with other writers was in television when I did Dark Angel. The television room is a highly collaborative and fun experience. So we put together a team, three teams actually — one for each script. The teams consist of me and another writer on each one of those three films. Each [individual writer] would have their own script that they’re responsible for. But what we did that was unique beforehand was we sat in a writing room for five-months eight-hours-a-day and we worked out every beat of the story across all three films so it all connects as one three film saga. I didn’t tell [the three writers] which sequel was going to be theirs to write until the very last day. So everybody was equally invested story-wise in all three films. So the guy that got the third movie, which is the middle film of this new trilogy, he now knows what preceded and what follows out of what he’s writing at any given moment. We all consider that to be a really exciting, creative and groundbreaking experiment in screenwriting. It worked as a process to get our minds around this epic and all these new creatures and environments and characters.

I could too, honestly. Lindelof working with someone is different than Lindelof being given the reins.

And again, to be fair to Salerno - he's working with Cameron, so it's not like he's going to be given free reign to fuck up.

Hell, now I kinda hope Lindelof gets brought in. Not for the salt - although a little salt never hurt a decent dish - but because people would have to stop and re-think their narrative about the guy for a second. Granted, they'd probably go right back to it, but still.

edit: He also got Josh Friedman on one of those scripts, I believe, right? I thought that was pretty cool.

He's wanted to create his own universe ala Star Wars since he wanted to make the first film.

His first film is only the highest grossing film of all time by a long shot and he's now being given free reign, all the budget and all the time in the world to continue to develop his own brainchild. What a failure.

The path to Lindelof redemption begins with Tomorrowland, hopefully. :)

Looking at IMDb, the second and third Avatar movies also have Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver credited as writers (they worked on Rise/Dawn otPotApes). That certainly bodes well - those two also wrote Jurassic World.

Their stuff was thrown out of Jurassic World I believe and completely re-written. According to Trevorrow, the only reason they're still getting screenplay credit is due to some fucked up thing in the WGA arbitration process.

Yeah. Although I get the odd sense that Tomorrowland's just gonna get lost in the sauce this summer. Which would suck, as it's original sci-fi directed by Brad Bird. But right now, it feels like it's been consigned to "hope they find it on blu-ray/streaming" territory.

I don't give a fuck if Avatar made 10 billion dollars. It doesn't magically make the movie good. It's easily one of Cameron's weakest films to date and it is a FAARRRR Cry from becoming as beloved and interesting as the Star Wars Universe. Cameron can keep dreaming (and wasting his time).

Good luck to him ever coming close to generating even a fraction of the excitement that the TFA trailer brought.

I'm not saying Cameron will create the same sense of fandom or even wants to. He just wants to create his own self-contained original universe ala Star Wars. And he's doing just that.

He already created his own universe (Terminator Franchise) and completely revamped and thoroughly expanded another (Aliens). What does he need Abaddar for? It's a boring and completely uninteresting universe and its sad that we will never get to see a non-avatar film from Cameron again.

He no longer has the rights to Terminator and Alien and both have been tainted with inferior films by other filmmakers.

We've only seen a small part of the Avatar universe right now, it still has a load of potential. I definitely wouldn't call what we have seen uninteresting either. It has cool creature design, aliens, and mechs. I agree the overall narrative in Avatar was a bit weak and a tad too preachy, but it doesn't mean he can't do better. The universe has potential.

Whether one likes the first film or not, there's enormous potential in the Avatar universe.

I feel like people are being willfully obtuse here.

Cameron will always be one of my favorite directors. Terminator - Aliens - The Abyss - T2 - True Lies - Titanic is just an insane run of consecutive movies. All classics.

Avatar ...was fun enough...I don't hate it like some. I actually thought the 3D was great and it was gorgeous, but definitely the worst of his movies IMO (haven't seen Piranha 2). I'm disappointed that he seems to be going all-in on this. He can do whatever he wants, but meh.

I'll see anything he puts out though.
 
I don't recall when Avatar was first announced, but I remember wondering in the 12-year gap between Titanic and it if he would just quit making movies. Go out on the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Then he topped his own record. Crazy.

As far as I know he does in fact regain the rights in 2019. By that point though, hopefully, Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will be out.

Even when Cameron does regain the rights, it will be coming off of 2-3 new Terminator films (the first of which will be released in a few weeks) that will further change the perception of the franchise. Maybe the new Terminator films will be good, maybe they won't. Whatever they are they aren't James Cameron's Avatar though. Combined with Rise of the Machines and Salvation, is Cameron even going to want to touch the Terminator franchise again? My guess would be probably not. I could see him licensing the property out to others' to keep making money off of it in order to fund his other projects (both in Hollywood and elsewhere).

Or he could make another Terminator movie, I just don't think he's interested in that. Quality aside, the Terminator franchise has been mined pretty well now (even the new one basically just seems like a remix). He very likely did everything he wanted to with Terminator in those first two films.
