Avatar director James Cameron has revealed that, while some may be interested in the potential of virtual reality for the entertainment industry, he isn't particularly enthused.

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal conference panel (via The Hollywood Reporter), Cameron explained that while he may have merrily embraced 3D technology for Avatar and its sequels, the latest step forward in technology holds no such draw for him

James Cameron said:
There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly. The question that always occurred to me is, when is it going to be mature, when is it going to be accepted by the public at large, when are people going to start authoring in VR and what will that be? What will the level of interactivity with the user be other than just I can stand and look around? If you want to move through a virtual reality it’s called a video game, it’s been around forever.

Not sure if this should be in gaming or off topic. I wonder if this disonnect of being in a virtual world but having to move with sticks is going to be a deal braker for some.

Lock if old.

Then raise the bar!

Cameron is the greatest filmmaker of all time. he's a true visionary of unrivaled genius.
VR is doomed.

Lets see what will come first, a VR headset in every home, or people watching 3D movies in every home with the standard glasses and a 3D capable TV?

I will bet one U.S. dollar it's VR.

Those are kind of my questions... it seems like people are eager to have this in their hands in a few years but it's not going to be relevant for a long while.

Hahahaha, Cameron doesn't give a fuck apparently! I eagerly anticipate these consumer VR units, and really want to try the experience. It will bring a new level of immersion, and I dig immersion.

Cameron is an asshole.

Having an opinion makes him an asshole? Good to know.

Cameron knows his tech and I respect him greatly. And seeing as he's actually working on building a fully immersive world with Disney, he knows a thing or two about "presence. "

After listening to Cameron yammer on about the Avatar game forever ago during the Ubisoft presentation, I've pretty much dismissed his opinions permanently. Unless he's spending money to build another submarine, I really don't care.

Of course it doesn't entice him; it can't be used to make an action movie with a romantic subplot. And it will never reach a large enough market to sell 100 million tickets.

In fact, I would bet it won't sell any tickets at all!

Well that's sold it to me then!! James Cameron not liking something can only really be seen as a bonus.

Considering Cameron is increasingly concerned with creating virtual detailed vistas that dwarf the actors inhabiting them, I thought this would be up his alley. Avatar was visually very impressive but I'm not sure his quest to integrate them so the brain doesn't say "this is very CGI / cartoony looking" is anywhere near being realized either - I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on that.

I respect Cameron alot, but I see Avatar as a Lucas-ish (and im being careful here) venture that places the panoramic virtual world as it's primary concern and the actual acting / characters second.

I love Cameron as much as the next guy, but that is a surprisingly idiotic thing he just said.

Also, I wish he would get on Alita instead of another fucking Avatar, and another after that. Ugh.

hes not having ago at games just saying films aren't really a fit for vr which is clear as day.

hes saying games are better than films for the kind of experiences you get on vr.

somehow some of you are getting defensive about that nothing statement about the craft of film making.

VIDEOGAMES!

I am not that fussed about VR at the moment in games (will have awesome implications for virtual conferencing/meetings), it is a far bigger deal than stereoscopic 3d...I had seen 3d of the quality seen in Avatar over 10 years before in Imax...

VR could be seriously cool in films if you could move around the set space...Could add a level of immersion and 'interactivity' that I feel films lack relative to say theatre. Although a live performance by a human will always have the edge in that regard.

James will likely die from old age before there are any great vr movies available. So I kinda understand his general disinterest.

It's a good thing that people are taking his dismissal of current VR personally. We created VR so it's logical to respond to this monster's allegations by insulting something he created.

Hey, how about you go make that Battle Angel Alita movie instead of trying to sound like a jerk. If you want to impress us, how about you show us how you turn a manga into a live action movie and doing it right.
