it takes more courage to acknowledge the categorical superiority -- hardware and software -- of sony's product than it does to buy into the ds's low-rent iconoclasm. ten years of great games, and a lot of people still have a hard time liking sony. it's interesting. but too big and creepy to delve into.

Jonny, are you scared to adore Dynasty Warriors?
I can understand if you hate the DS because of numbskull Nintendo fanboys that posted crap about the GC for the past four years, but you should still give it a chance. I know it's a corny tagline but touching is fun... seriously. I don't know how to describe the sensation, but actually dragging a pen around and having Kirby follow my drawn line is a hell of a lot more engaging than pushing a d-pad around. This is the first Kirby game I've properly enjoyed.

Touching isn't fun. It's unresponsive -- I've tried it on THREE DS units now and a variety of kiosks -- and it's an irritating form of control that obfuscates part of the screen and feels unpleasantly unbalanced, especially when combined with the DS all-too-traditional form factor. Hell, I use a mouse on my Tablet PC when I get a chance. Some of you seem to prize novelty -- I just can't imagine being that jaded.

on the evidence of wario ware, feel the magic, and yoshi, i suspect that touching is no fun whatsoever. i can't believe they predicated an entire console on drawing circles around things and drawing lines under other things. i mean: didn't it occur to someone that this sucked? isn't there a failsafe for this sort of thing? it raises some of the questions the virtual boy raised.

The PSP ain't the be all and end all device some of you think it is Its fantastic for games and like I said, I can't wait for more titles but I'm beginning to think that the media functions are flawed, especially when we can't do something like burn our own UMD (for music+media). What if I went on a holiday and shot footage? Or did a cool animated sequence in 3dsmax. I can't make them to share or have more media on a easy to carry format like my own UMD disc. Sure mem stick is the one way to do so but its costly and limited. I understand the piracy concerns but offering this GREAT SCREEN, media capability and then crippling users ability to maximise usage is its greatest flaw. Way too many of you overrate its usability as a media player. It needs a HDD or a burnable disc feature.

well, you shouldn't take anyone here too seriously. but seriously: when did puzzle games attain this sort of primacy? was it when the redoubtable miz brought the "games as art" crowd aboard, or was it when it became apparent there was nothing else on ds? there are dozens of falling block puzzle games on every platform, and a lot of them are equally, interchangeably good. it also kills me when people say lumines is the reason to own a psp.

For me, drawing on a screen is simply another form of control. I really fail to find the act of using a touch screen any more exciting than mouse/keyboard or traditional D-pad and buttons. The only difference is that this stylus is far more cumbersome and uncomfortable, and that none of the mechanics of the games that use TOUCH have justified that particular control scheme to me. I still have VASTLY more fun playing games with traditional controls, and until they create a touch game with the depth and polish of the games I do like, it'll remain the portable equivalent of those DK bongos, made for jaded types who prefer novelty controls over developed, evolved mechanics simply because the Sony orthodoxy drives 'em crazy.
Hell, I'm hoping Advance Wars DS makes the stylus optional; same for Castlevania. I'd rather play both games with just the D-Pad and buttons, instead of holding the DS in an uncomfortable position and trying to tap on the screen.

and why not? Lumines has a lot more longevity in it than most games. Its fun, its trendy and its a good showcase of PSP's audio + screen capabilities. I won't go into Meteos because I haven't played it.

well, tetris was a first. lumines isn't even the hundred-and-first. i don't remember anyone outside of puzzle specialists losing their shit over bust a move or puyo puyo or tetris attack. any one of which is equally good.
and i don't see any basic difference between a touchscreen and a mouse either. they're both pointing devices. they do basically the same thing. the key difference between the ds and the pc is that, on the pc, no one could get away with charging $40 for zookeeper.

And screw Kirby DS. I'm not an artist nor do I wanna get into such things. Sure the things you gotta draw are simple enough but c'mon. Can't we just have a "normal" game just once? Also aside from my signature every now and then I'm really not used to "writing" or holding a pen/stylus. Talk about the crampy and uncomfortable feelings I'd get from drawing my way through Kirby.
FFIII is on DS too. I'm not fussed either way though. Cinematics will obviously be better on the PSP if that's what you like about the FF series.Tabris said:
