Japan claims another victim (PS4)

But that's what is happening everywhere else.

No it's not. Multiplat games do exist you know and not everyone is a PC gamer. Therefore BF4, CoD, AC4, etc are all games PS4 owners have been playing. If you think most people are buying PS4's for future inFamous and Uncharted, you're wrong.

It takes a lot of time for Japanese developers to move onto the next console generation. PS4 will see more sales as more Japanese specific games are made. It's not going to sell massive numbers, but we'll see sales go up when FFXV, KHIII, new Tales, etc. come to it. Until they come, Japan is not going to buy a new console at launch "hoping" all these games come to it one day. They buy the console when the games come.

Can someone post the launch numbers of the PS3 again?

Given the results the PS4 is having over there I wonder if Microsoft will even release the X1 there. I mean, I don't see them doing better than Sony given past consoles.

The state of home consoles in Japan is a real shame.

Japanese devs have really gone down hill sadly

Is that why Japan is still leading in the fighting games department? Or how about their deeper action games like Bayo and DMC?

Hell, my favorite TPS game was Vanquish, and they somehow changed that whole outlook of what a TPS could turn out like.

I really do think the industry is in decline.

People are holding onto the great PS4 numbers as some sort of counter example, but it's a bit like the falling of the Roman empire in that people will keep saying everything's fine until it's too late.

Where do we go from here? Honestly I don't know but I suspect Apple will have a say in where gaming goes next. I'm watching their moves with AppleTV very closely. They have something up their sleeves for sure.

I really don't see the problem with people not buying consoles with no games that appeal to them.

PS4 is definitely my choice this gen, I just don't see a reason to buy it right now. I'm a lot more excited with the PS3 this year.

You forgot Dark Souls!

And people are calling the death of the PS4 and praying that they are right, and once it doesn't happen, they'll pretend they never said such silly things.

We can play this both ways.

You forgot Dark Souls!

Damnit! Dark/Demon Souls too! And a bunch of fun, overlooked games like Way of the Samurai 4, Folklore, 3D Dot Hereos, and The Last Remnant.

Honestly be stupid of them to launch in Japan just throwing money away. Use that savings for lots of money hats.

It's Japan's lost. I won't mind getting one of those "Made in Japan" PS4s tho since they seem to be in abundant supply xD.

Yeah, they have something up there alright. All the worms from their growing stock of rotten apples.

Amazon's more interesting than Apple in the core console market space. Apple is a non-starter.

Japan is goingg full mobile, we can only hope that the next nintendo handheld is succesful , so we can at least get some of their games .

Obviously , the big publisher will continue their support of consoles , but they are going to be more focused on the western market ...

There are just not enough games yet. I am honestly more surprised why it´s sells so well in the west. I guess Fifa and CoD really is enough to sell it to the mainstream here.
Why are you surprised? The best selling western games all released on day 1. The best selling Japanese games aren't there on day 1.

There were only 90k Ps3's ready for launch. But you can see that in the long term it kept selling better than what the PS4 is going to do (judging by its drop, I doubt it'll hold even 30k a week for the next month).

Console gaming is done for in Japan. And Sony isn't stupid ofcourse, they didn't prioritize this market and they made no effort to exclusively develop something for it too.

Well, maybe because the PS4 is technically a western console? :P

I don't know. It's no games, that's why. Wait till FFXV hits. It'll skyrocket. Whenever that may be is the question!

Agree. PS4 will be awesome in time, but not yet. The PS3 is still getting good stuff.

Obviously the Western market is important for bigger pubs, but Japanese attitudes seem to imply that Japan is still the primary market.

I really hope Nintendo's next handheld is amazing, I need to keep getting Japanese games.

Yeah I'm kinda worried about what happens to handheld games if Nintendo's handhelds don't succeed. They'd probably go mobile, or not get made at all.

With the exception of Sony's own games (which really aren't appealing to the market), it's just filled with a bunch of games that you can get on the PS3. Until that changes the sales aren't going to look good.

Then why did it sell so well in the US? Were Killzone and Knack the primary driver for the console? Most of the other games were available on PS3.

I think the US was just hungrier for Next Gen than Japan is.

Smartphones are going to erode Nintendo's grip on the Japanese handheld market as well. I don't expect their next handheld to match 3DS's sales.

This is why Sony launched the PS4 in other areas other than japan, it's just not worth the launch over there. They sold more at launch, by launching it in N.America and European countries first compared to even japans launch of the PS2. I think Sony was smart in this way. No point in launching it over there if they are only going to get 500k at the most or even 300k which I believe was what they sold at launch in japan....300k.

They are to much into their handhelds over there, I think they are quite done with consoles.

When? There isn't a single Japanese killer app on the horizon (FFXV is probably 2016). It's not a very good situation.

I'm not going to completely disagree with you there. But DW8 will do gangbusters, FFONLINE will do alright, and the awful "wait three months before releasing any information about a game' will come into play soon.

I'm not saying that's a good idea, or that it's not an indication of something terrible, because it possibly could be. But it's better to just wait a few months and see where things stand before calling it in.

There is no Japanese games because Japanese devs don't support the console. With over 6M consoles sold , you would expect something from them..But no! I guess i will play JRPG Indies and WRPG this gen then.

Ouch. Honestly did not think it would be that bad. :/
I only expected 400k to 500k PS4 consoles to be sold. The only thing disappointing to me is Yakuza Ishin not selling more (I thought it would do 200k on PS4 alone). Japan isn't going to buy a console in large numbers until it has the games they want. They have no interests in games that sell well in the west.

JP devs have games in development for PS4, but they will take a while to come out.

Who is shocked by this?

Console gaming is done in Japan.

Sorrowfully, I agree. Games just aren't selling well over there that aren't on handhelds and this pattern has been going on for years. I wonder how much a DQ game on a console would sell.... DQ10 is online and on wii but that didn't even break 300k. 9 sold what...4 million on the DS. I can't believe not even a million wouldn't buy it, if just for a month of free service.

Is it because console gaming is increasingly about being connected (and ends to be to justify the price) and Japanese people are more reserved? What's social media usage like there?
