I haven't been keeping up with the charts lately but did famitsu ever give us their 2020 top 100 list?
I would like to know if FF7R ever breached 1m...

the chinese release didn't seem to effect the demand in Japan, silpheed-mcd silpheed-mcd how are lines and lotteries for the ps5 going?
this lack of software sales on the ps5 is absolutely perplexing at this point, I wonder why is it behaving completely differently than previous consoles in Japan

Monster Hunter Rise shipments and digital sales over seven million

It might reach 10 million on Switch alone. Add PC to that and it will get very close to MHW numbers.

Yeah, i think Japanese third party companies who rely on Japan for their sales will prioritize the Switch from now on and i will not be surprised if they skipped the PS4 and PS5 completely and make their games a Switch exclusive.

This reminds me when the PS2 had an insane amount of exclusive Japanese games just because it was the only console that could sell third party games in Japan.

What if COVID brought forward a lot of sales? Post COVID in 2022 surely there will be a drop.
Almost certainly yes. But Switch sales could hit 6.5 million this year, so even it drops in 2022 it could still hit 5 million and end the year at 28.5. Then it just needs to sell 4 million in 2023 to beat the DS

Not confirmed of course but it's possible, depending on line up and when the successor launches.

Yeah definitely possible. Nintendo will have done well to improve their sales by beating wii u + 3ds. Not an easy feat.

Marvelous will end up the 4th company to surpass 500K for the year next week or the week following.
Rune Factory 5's launch is the highest seen in the franchise and it's very likely the game will be able to achieve 300K lifetime physically. If Olive Town manages 400K by the end of the year and Sakuna surpasses 300K on the PS4/NSW we are looking at the first time in the company's history to surpass 1 million physical sales in Japan. That's without any additional launches but there might be more surprise hits like Sakuna which with digital has probably already surpassed 500K sales in Japan. That's a pretty massive debut for a game made by two people.
The other thing to note about Capcom, Konami & Marvelous is that their end of year sales will be over 85% on the Switch, who knows how many other publishers will experience the same thing in Japan, especially with the expectations that we might be seeing some additional big games for the Switch Pro

Next week of Rune Factory 5, Miitopia both should enjoy a good hold, I expect 60-70% drop for Rune Factory 5 and 40-50% for Miitopia. Both games have still a lot of unsold stock, so pretty hefty expectations by the retailers both games have close to 150K initial shipment, still I think both will have no trouble requiring a second shipment by the end of June.

Next major releases are Game Builder Garage & Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade, considering the price Game Builder Garage is the one more likely of the two games to surpass 100K. Its price is just Y3,000 and it's trending very well in Japan with the official videos of the game already amassing over 1 million views on Nintendo JP's YouTube channel and being in the Top 10 on Amazon.co.jp. My expectations for Game Builder Garage is definitely above 100K
Integrade
could be bought via the PS4 version and the equivalent of Y500 update, since VII Remake sold over 1 million copies in Japan, there is plenty of second hand supply. Overall I'd be surprised if the PS5 version manages to surpass 50K due to these factors, doubt retailers would order much after seeing how Village is performing on the PS5.

The next major game on the PS4/PS5 is actually nearly a month away and I still don't know what to expect from Scarlet Nexus, as I had mentioned a few weeks ago, basically Nier Replicant, Scarlet Nexus, Village are the only major games on the ecosystem during the first half of this year.
Knowing the Switch's line-up till September and potentially the Pro launching with some major Japanese third party games this year will be a pretty resounding move to a market dominated by over 95% by a single device, something unprecedented since Sony entered the market with the original PlayStation.
Western Franchises like Call of Duty & GTA which managed millions on the PS3/PS4 are in a particular situation with the Pro launch, since no doubt these games in particular want to be part of the growth that Switch is providing and it might actually mean that the Western differentiation of the PS in Japan might also change - it already happened with Western Indies and Minecraft, so overall the Switch is a position next year to see further growth in software sales in Japan.

Pretty much the end of Japan. 😞

So is Japan just not a hardcore gaming society anymore? Is that why Sony has switched its focus to the west?
What are these posts based on? Japan is the second biggest market in the world for dedicated video game devices, it's showing good growth and a variety of different genres are doing well here. It's in a very good place right now and heading into what should be a good summer.

TOTAL: 4.590.429

Gap is already at 3.67 million when comparing this year's results among third parties and what preceded the first four years of the Switch.

Konami will soon surpass 3 million sales on the Switch and Baseball Spirits & Yu-gi-oh launching this year they should have no problems reaching something like 4.5 million. If they end up launching Winning Eleven on the Switch it could very well be an even higher total. On their heals will be Capcom with Rise, Stories 2, Generations Ultimate & Ace Attorney both companies will soon be uncontested at the top.

Square does have Dragon Quest III Remake launching this year, so overall they should equal their result for the previous years as this Remake will probably do very well on the Switch as there hasn't been one since the Gameboy Color in 2000. Outside of that Bravely Default 2 definitely under-performed and failed to see franchise growth. While Neo: The World Ends with You is another title with uncertain potential at this point but should have no problems surpassing 100K sales, with continued sales of DQXIS, we are looking at potential of north of 1 million units for Square.

Marvelous is the shaping up for the third or forth spot this year in competition with Square, a lot depends on whether they can find another surprise like Sakuna for the fall. Still they are the other publisher with potential to surpass 1 million units on the Switch.

Combined just these four companies will surpass 10 million sales this year on the Switch, which will put the relative support of the prior four years into full perspective. 2021 is really the first year where Switch is enjoying third party support in Japan and this will be a major factor in the peak hardware sales we expect Switch to reach.

We should get a few new title reveals for the Switch Pro from third parties.

So is Japan just not a hardcore gaming society anymore? Is that why Sony has switched its focus to the west?

All Software Sales PlayStation in Japan:
PS1 - 160 million

PS2 - 180 million
PSP - 77 million
TOTAL - 257 million

PS3 - 74 million
PSV - 28 million
TOTAL - 102 million

PS4 - 50 million*

Overall its Sony losing market share since the PS2/PSP days, they shed close to 155 million software transitioning to PS3/PSV and over 50 million going to the PS4/PSVR, PS5/PSVR2 is looking like it will continue the decline putting software sales on the system potentially in a similar place to the Wii U without Nintendo's output.

Wii - 75 million
DS - 213 million
TOTAL - 288 million

Wii U - 15 million
3DS - 226 million
TOTAL - 241 million

Overall Nintendo managed to keep the same audience despite Wii U being such a failure, that's down to stronger software sales on a platform that ended up selling less than the DS.
Switch seems to be heading towards surpassing DS by 2023-2024 in Japan so software sales will likely end up over 300 million during it's lifetime currently it's at about half way through it's life with peak software years ahead of it 2021 will be the peak year until it's surpassed by 2022. This happening while only facing the PS5 in Japan is definitely going to accelerate third party support in the coming years for the Switch despite not really getting much support for it's first four years on the market, Japanese third parties are about to capitalize especially with the Pro launching in the fall.
