I think Sony killed a lot of potential GT4 sales with the Prologue edition and the lack of online. Likewise, Winning Eleven 9 and Dynasty Warriors are down a little as well.

... Right. I think it's time for me to stop studying for the night. I Can't even read numbers :)

Well that makes the AC number REALLY good, especially considering that AC is still selling like crazy.

I just hope that Sony is selling all those PSPs at a small profit or something, because their software isn't getting the job done in Japan, of course higher quality releases are on the way. Doesn't PSP software do much better in America?

Here's the charts kinda grouped by the key system battles. xbox 360 makes its entry capturing 3% of market in its very first month. Resi 4 did well, with the 2 versions at a combined total of over 600K. Just like Tales of Symphonia before it, an example of multiplatform development leading to success for Japublishers. The big story though was the DS taking the top spot and leapfrogging the ps2 for total number of software units sold in a month. That doesnt happen very often.

The real question in the PSP vs. DS battle is when will Sony's money hats stop being enough of a reason for devs to make PSP games.

Ehh, can we really be sure about that, though? Yes from the top 100 DS outsold PSP by ~400K. But the 100th ranked game was still nearly 12K. Considering that PS2 has hundreds more games from 101 on than DS does, it could be tops.

Yes it does much better in the US. The number of PSP games sold in the US through the end of November was 6.3 million units putting the tie ratio at about 2.5:1.

Nintendo wins. Flawless victory, fatality.

nah, flawless victory would have meant they owned home consoles and handheld. Truth is the GC got outsold by the Xbox360 though :p

I'll give you the fatality though :)

Anyway, top 100 software
DS 3,813,469 (40.7%)
PS2 3,414,507 (36.4%)
GBA 1,052,516 (11.2%)
PSP 514,390 (5.5%)
GC 502,681 (5.4%)
X360 72,334 (0.8%)
ds sw outselling ps2 sw for dec (in the top 100) is amazing!

And thats the real kicker right there. DS may only be outselling the PSP by just over 3 times. But DS software is outselling PSP software by nearly 8 times.

Developers/publishers will be taking notice.
i agree.

I see PSP software outsold the GC software for the month. I bet Sony's proud.
Actually, Eyeshield 21 is listed as a PSP game, but it is really a PS2 game as far as I can tell. Therefore, the actual monthly Top 100 totals are: (I'm assuming that Rock-Man's addition was correct)

GC = 502,681
PSP = 501,972

So Sony can't even be proud of that. But hey - it still topped the X360, so all is not lost. Also, if anyone cares, the DS total should be slightly higher (Futari Danzen DS is really 34,408).

Using Rock-Man's addition, the monthly totals should be:

DS 3,817,829 (40.7%)
PS2 3,426,925 (36.6%)
GBA 1,052,516 (11.2%)
GC 502,681 (5.4%)
PSP 501,972 (5.4%)
X360 72,334 (0.8%)

And an interesting examination of tie-ratios for the month (based on Top 100 sales only):

DS = 2.64
PSP = 1.18

This shows the real problem that Sony faces in Japan right now with the PSP. The PSP has had a similarly low (and even lower) tie ratio for many months now. For whatever reason (and I don't know the answer), nobody buys any games to use with their PSPs. The PSP had a pretty solid year in terms of hardware (more than 2 million units for the year), but the software sales have just been abysmal. And the Tie Ratio for the PSP is actually lower now than it was back in late spring. And I'm not sure how Sony goes about fixing that problem because the PSP has had a fairly steady release list of known brands, but sales have been few and far between.

Galactic Fork

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
Are 3rd parties worried about competing with nintendo's top sellers? I could see some worried their games are going to be over shadowed, but others wanting to be on the same system as games selling so much (plus selling so many systems). Then again, it might force them to put more effort into DS games.

What's considered the lower limit for a "good selling game" in Japan? At least enough that developers are glad they put it out. I know it varies by development costs, but I just mean in general.

No! I counted Eyeshield as a PS2 game actually. :)

It's probably being used a lot more as a multimedia device in Japan than anywhere else in the world, I wouldn't be suprised anyway.

I'm a western gamer and I use my PSP for everything but games. I'm not that surprised it's a common trend in Japan.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Capcom must be happy that about half of the PSP software sales are from MHP with all the PSP titles they have coming out soon.

You got total SW LTD's for the DS and PSP so we could work out a more accurate tie ratio for Japan?

EDIT: And holy shit I thought the games outside the top 100 would push PS2 over the DS.

Bandai: 987K
Capcom: 906K
Pokemon: 846K

12/04 - 12/05:

PSP software: 4.75M
DS software: 12.97M
PSP hardware: 2.57
DS hardware: 5.1M

Tie Ratios:

PSP: 1.85
DS: 2.54

This doesn't include the end of December spike, which had to have changed the DS dramatically since Motto Brain Training, MKDS, ACWW and a whole bunch of others sold really well.
