Japan Returning to Form this gen? (Game Development wise)

Just giving my two cents here as I have played through both Vesperia and Berseria.

It's actually really hard for me to say which one is better. As far as story and characters go though I would say Berseria is far better than Vesperia. Vesperia does a few things better like dungeon and field design. Overall I would say both of them are absolutely must plays. Both of them are top tier Tales games and JRPGs in general.

Man vesperia or Lost odyssey two of the very few outstanding AAA JRPG of last gen. Wow if you are saying beseria is as good as vesperia i gotta check it out.

oh yes, the comeback is real.

last gen did have some very noteworthy games, but the sheer volume of quality output we're getting right now wasn't the same.

Dark Souls, FFXV, TLG, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Nioh, Nier. Japanese devs firing on all cylinders with more to come. Video games are in a good place right now :)

It's incredible how many games I may end up getting this year due to their return to form. So far I've loved the fuck out of Gravity Rush 2, and plan on getting Zelda, Nier, and Persona. But then you hear good things about Nioh, Yakuza 0, etc., and my wallet just wants to cry lol

Definitely get Nioh bro. It's an amazing mix of Dark Souls, Diablo 3, Onimusha, Ninja Gaiden. My God Nioh is a good game. One of the best games I played in last 10 years for sure.

I feel like they're doing a better job, but they are still nowhere near PS2's era of quality. But they are picking up their own slack from last gen.

I think there have been many missteps by Japan devs this generation, but I do feel like they are coming back in a big way.

I am still disgusted by the lack of a proper Ninja Gaiden sequel (we got Nioh so it stings less). A proper Devil May Cry sequel. A proper Castlevania. The potential to use these existing IPs to make games that are actually amazing is so obvious but no one does anything worthwhile with them and its so goddamn frustrating.

I want to see new games just as much but goddamn what are yall doing.

better than Vesperia?

25+ hours in and yeah, Berseria is better than Vesperia so far. The cast and story is far more consistent and higher quality. I actually think Berseria's combat is the best in the series so far. It also straight up apes Vesperia's (and FFIX's) learnable skills on equipment.

I am quite enjoying the resurgence of Japanese games on consoles. Lots of quality stuff this gen.

It seems like japanese devs(or rather, pubs) have finally reaslised people like japanese games because they're uniquely japanese.

Last gen's problem was that everybody hoped on the westernization bandwagon, but they just couldn't emulate them well enough.

In terms of delivering some nice cool games hell yeah. There been some really nice Japanese games lately and it's nice to see.

In terms of competing with Western games in sales and impact not even close.

Nioh
Yakuza 0
Gravity Rush 2
Resident Evil 6

And that's just the past month or so. They've really come back in a big way, and I'm glad for them.

I just wonder if its a blip, with a coincidence of many long in development games all coming out at the same time. Will we see a are more consistent flow of substantial games.

Microsoft funded/backed uniquely Japanese games last gen though. So it wasn't an identity issue.

I think the problem revolves around how Japan doesn't have an answer to the rise in budgets. Notice how risk averse many Japanese publishers were at the start of this gen, whereas the likes of Ubisoft, Take-Two, EA etc where there day one.

I think they left console development mostly because of PS3 being so hard and expensive to develop for and the fact that Wii was dominating and never could catch the fanbase they had in Sony consoles, but with UE4 and general game development being democratized (and as such, general budgets lowering for a whole decade), they can join the game again... Also, PC gaming has been a good opportunity for them specially in the West where they have very loyal niches starving for games with that specific art style since forever!

If you like Japanese games, last generation was pretty painful. There are a few examples of really great games coming from Japanese studios, but there are way more examples of once competent studios floundering badly. On the other hand, we just had Yakuza Zero, Gravity Rush 2, Final Fantasy XV, Nioh, The Last Guardian, AND Resident Evil 7 drop. In, like, a month and a half. All of those games are simply great. It is pretty apparent that the Japanese developers are back in a very big way.

I... disagree. Strongly.

Berseria is better than Tales has been in a very long time, but I would hesitate to even necessarily call it good (even if the skits and battle system are on point). I don't think it is anywhere near the quality of the PS1 era Tales games.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
It's important to note that there are more westerners working in Japanese studios now than ever before (though studios are still predominantly Japanese).

There's more understanding of avenues like Steam, and Epic and Unity have worked really really really hard to push their engines in Japan. All of that together has made large scale development much easier in Japan.

Berseria is good, but I also totally feel like it's being handed free passes and praises. There's a lot wrong with Berseria, but it's still decent. You can't criticize the other titles and then totally glance over flaws in the new one because you like the story and characters.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Berseria has flaws, namely:

- The equipment system is still crappy and disorganized.
- Dungeons are zzzz and savepoints are few and far between
- System can get mashy

But other than that, those flaws are forgivable IMO. Compared to Xillia and Zestiria, both of them had the same major issue
latter half was rushed, cut, and it's painfully obvious.
.

I'm glad Japanese developers are getting more and more into releasing their titles on PC as well, I'll definitely support those if they're handled properly and optimized.

Remember the nes, ps1,ps2 era? When Japanese games used to dominate the world with quality/innovative products. JRPGs ruled the world and rightfully so as lot of masterpieces came out during those era. But the 360 and ps3 era Japan IMO fell behind the western game development. Western games featured richer story, more innovation in games, and higher quality AAA titles. JRPGs almost went extinct in the AAA market, fighting games aside from MK almost went extinct for a while until SFIV etc.

Bloodborne: Spiritual sequel to series that started during PS360 era
Resident Evil 7: Reviewing the same as Resident Evil 5, from the PS360 era
Final Fantasy XV: absolute development hell, released to good but not excellent reception
Street Fighter V: Widely considered to be a total fiasco and disappointing compared to the PS360 era installment
Dark Souls 3: Widely considered to be weakest installment of a series that launched in PS360 era
The Last Guardian: absolute development hell
Metal Gear Solid 5: absolute development hell
The Evil Within: Neither widespread critical or commercial success
Bayonetta: Direct sequel to PS360 game
New Smash: Still hasn't dethroned previous installment from two generations ago, but yes admittedly better than the Wii game

And upcoming games like persona 5, dragon quest xi, nino no kuni 2, FFVII remake(2050 release date), Legend of Zelda, nier etc.

Two games that are sequels to PS360 era games; one that you admit is never going to release; one that's in development hell AND cross-generation

I think if you actually unpack this what you mean is "There have been some good Japanese games recently". Cool.

Nioh is the result of ninja gaiden, onimusha, and souls having a viagra fueled all night threesome.

Its fucking fantastic.

The combat in nioh is second to none, and id risk saying even better than bloodborne. but i havent played bb at 60fps so i dont know
but goddamn is it exhilarating to dance round the battlefield at super saiyan speeds with low stance weapons

what does them being sequels to ps360 games or in development hell have to do with the fact that theyre good games coming from japan?
you also excluded nioh ,gr2 and yakuza.
also, evil within was a commercial success.

Its like youre actively searching for reasons to shoot down each game. some because theyre like their ps360 counterparts, others because theyre not
some because they didnt review super high, others because they did and scores mean nothing.

The link posted in OP is an interview with the director of Project Phoenix, which is a bit....ironic.

But I'm more than happy for more Japanese games coming.

I mean, just being able to say that already makes this time period much better than most years during last gen. xD

Japan fell behind in terms of development and is now starting to improve again, in many cases by watching and copying what western devs have done, resulting in some of the best gameplay in their respective series in years (MGSV, FFXV, RE7). Hopefully, we can soon add Zelda to that list.

The Souls series was a shining beacon of greatness in a sea of mediocrity and decline last gen and this still continues with new entries in the series (BB, DS3) as well as similar games following its formula (Nioh is awesome).

I have been basking in the glory of Japanese games for the past few months and it doesn't seem like that train will stop soon.

My favorite games tend to be produced in Japan so I'm very happy to see so many great releases.

Definitely a return to form. I almost wanted to quit last gen if it wasn't for the Yakuza games, Valkyria Chronicles, Ni no Kuni and Dark Souls.

For me, the icing on the cake will be Breath of the Wild and Granblue Fantasy Re Link (if Granblue will be as big scale as they claimed it will). If not, I'm hopeful for a. Hack.

They never went away, we just simply had several smashed against each other at one time.

I mean if Ubisoft puts Assassins, Watch Dogs 3, Just Dance, and Ghost Recon on the same 2 weeks does that mean they are back too?

depends are they as good as RE7, Nioh, Yakuza 0 or GR2?

Maybe lol. Weird thing is I feel like Ubisoft has the most interesting games I have 0 interest in playing haha. I wanna try their games but the controls and open world nonsense is a big NOPE.

But yeah, even in the PS3 era they never went away. It's just that the big franchises took a lot of odd turns to get into groups that were never interested in them or ever would be. -cough resident evil 6- I think a lot more realize they don't need to blow the bank, change things for a region that already likes their games, or hold back IP because its "very Japanese" like its a point of contention in the west or something.

Without Pokemon or mainline Final Fantasy, and with Switch and Wii U hardware constrained (Zelda, Mario), it seems unlikely that a Japanese game will crack the 2017 top 10 NPD.

Western games have always offered more innovation and better stories than japanese ones. If anything western games only became worse on the seventh generation in that perspective. It's just that those traits has nothing to do with commercial success.

I've never played Vesperia but I heard it's on par.

Plus the story of Berseria is consistent (and from the impressions, the story of Berseria is better).

sounds like a must buy if it's on par or better than vesperia

Not a coincidence it's very PS4 bound. Sony really changed their hardware and attitude to developers-first and made it exciting. With that they are now taking great use of their home turf advantage to lift projects onto their platform ahead of the competition.

SE in particular has a pretty awful 2017 lined up.

Well this is true so far but they played a blinder the last few months.

July: I am Setsuna
August: Deus Ex
October: World of Final Fantasy/ Dragon Quest Builders
November: Rise of the Tomb Raider
December: Final Fantasy XV.

They deserve a breather after that.

They have Dragon Quest Heroes 2 in April and FFXII in July.

I am currently still trying to get through all these games.
