Languages aren't made to be practical. Otherwise, english wouldn't exist. ;)

Actually, I would say Japanese is an almost entirely practical language. This coming after ~4 years of study and 6 months of study abroad. Once you get to that point where you know enough words, things just start making sense. Speaking the language and writing in everything (except kanji) becomes second nature pretty easily.

Kanji, on the other hand, I think can really only be learned by living in Japan and seeing it ALL THE TIME. I took the four years and could barely remember any kanji. I go there for six months and I'm reading kanji almost fast enough to do really slow karaoke to it. I leave and it all gets flushed. :(

Man, I need to get a job there...

Yeah, I think english speakers forget how consistently inconsistent English can be.

Like hanashimasu -> hanasemasu before hanasu -> hanaseru?
Yeah, but it was the て form that was the real bitch, I think. I shudder to think at how long ago it was now, but so many things just instantly clicked for me when the dictionary form was introduced to me.

Would reading Japanese sites and news sites everyday (for 30-60 minutes) help retain it?
