Japan's first domestic stealth fighter

I'm confused. I thought the only military manpower and equipment Japan was suppose to have was from the US.

How and where does this new vehicle fit into that picture?

Japan has an indigenous military industrial base that carried over from World War 2. The only restrictions they have is that they can't export their military products, so any equipment produced are for JSDF use.

Uh no. Japan has one of the highest military budgets in the world (since it also has one of the biggest economies in the world) and is the 20th largest by number of active personnel (250,000 approx). It builds most of its own ships and ground vehicles as well as a large number of aircraft and small arms, either native designs or foreign designs built locally under license. The last 3 generations of tanks have been designed and built by Mitsubishi. The majority of all of Japan's military equipment is locally supplied.

The United States does maintain bases on Japanese soil but by number of personnel, they are dwarfed by the JSDF forces. The naval basing is important, but the number of American ground troops and aircraft is small.

It transforms into a Battroid... right?
Fixed that for you.

Or in short:

I think that in order to compete with putting anime ladies on stuff the U.S. needs to put John Wayne, cheeseburger, and Chuck Norris decals on the sides of our military hardware.

Japan got rid of that law last year and now they're in a bidding war (against Germany and France) for an upwards of $50 billion contract to supply Australia's navy with their next generation of submarines.

(hint - Japan's domestically produced stealth diesel subs are considered best in class)

You would think with how fast technology is on the rise that a jet like that would cost less. Granted you need to know what you're doing and cheap parts mean you're fighting in a cheaply designed aircraft. I've always wondered why they cost so much. No wonder the US is focusing more on our space program. It seems like everyone could do this for less.

Put it in Ace Combat 7 and I'll be happy.

It's sort of already in Ace Combat so it'll probably be in 7 as well! It's a fictional design based on the the X-2 called the ATD-0 which is in Ace Combat Infinity. They're doing an event next week where you can get a special version of the ATD-0 with the X-2 livery in the photo in the OP.

Project Aces put up the drawings of the ATD-0 a few days ago to celebrate the announcement of the X-2 here.

There's even a bright yellow one piloted by a chick because why not!

Haven't there been pics of this fighter already leaked before in a standard aircraft gray? Looked alot better and less retro/toy looking with actual military paint scheme

Yeah, there've been a few mockups floating around. I think this a good example of what it'll probably look like.

I've read that Japan has a tendency to make their equipment less aggressive-looking in public expos. Something to do with them still being on the fence culturally about their pacifism making people uncomfortable. Those pics of the anime helicopters is another such example, that's obviously not how they would look in an active deployment but more like a way to give them a humanising touch.

Better than the F-35
/s

No /s needed.

The F-3 will fulfil the role of an air superiority fighter which can't be fulfilled by the F-35. Most of the East Asian countries which deploy American fighter are running into that problem that they couldn't effective engage supercruise capable aircraft like the T-50 or J-20.

I figured the flag-coloured paint coat was celebratory.

Let us be fair here guys, may be it does not transform into a giant robot, but may be it could still combine with a helicopter, a tank, and a submarine into one.

400 million seems cheap for that space. Wonder how it performs. Not like it matters. No nation with Nuclear weapons has ever been attacked by another state.

Maybe not in our lifetime, but I fully expect the Japanese military to develop a functional Veritech/Gundam/Voltron at some point. It's their national destiny.

Japan so used to making and seeing crazy fucking mechs and stuff that their sense of what looks powerful is distorted. They don't realize that if they turned their cartoons into reality we would he scared shitless, and that their real life fighter plane looks like a toy from the 90s. You don't know your own strength japan!

It looks cheap and outdated because it's a smaller testbed, and not a full sized stealth prototype. It will look stealthier later on but I doubt the X2 will rival the F22, but maybe it'll bring it back. Godspeed

You realize that the F-22 will be 30 years old when the F-3 will get in service - so basically when the first F-22 airframes are at the end of their life time.

My guess is that it will become to the F-22 what the F-5 Tiger was to the F-4 Phantom. Japan isn't delusional, they know they can't just start up production of state of the art fighters from scratch when they haven't really been producing any truly domestic designs since WWII. From what I understand, the X2 is actually intended as the first step towards building a competitive 6th gen design more than anything, with the added benefit of somewhat plugging the 5th Gen hole. It doesn't have to match the F-22 anyway, being a match for the Chinese J20 is enough.

US is practically a generation+ ahead when it comes to aerospace, and the raptor ideally would be due for a replacement or upgrades when it nears 30.
