Jeb Bush releases 250k+ emails, doesn't redact correspondents' personal info

While this will definitely be a "he is so out of touch" talking point I doubt it will cost him as much as you might think.

Am I reading that right or is that letter in the OP someone begging to have a convicted child molester have a job around children?

Depends on if you have any data classification policies in place, and even in those cases I don't believe there's any requirements unless there is other compliance in place like HIPAA/PCI. None of that would apply to emails sent to the governor's inbox however.

i think it should be a good lesson learned that people shouldn't be treating email to flippantly. SSN, CC data, NOT IN EMAIL

Bush: I care about security!
Clinton: Like when you blasted the SSNs of 250,000 people online?

I'd say its a pretty good sticking point.

I doubt he personally did it but it doesn't mean he doesn't take the heat for it. Yeah, hes an old man but that just means he has aides do this tech stuff.

Eh.. The documents are already available as public record, correct? I know media outlets have obtained them.

That said, making them so easily searchable on a web portal without redaction isn't the best of ideas.
I'm pretty sure it's a felony to publicly disseminate personally identifying information, like Social Security Numbers or Tax Identification Numbers

The law requires this info for government officials to act on your behalf

http://www.justice.gov/opcl/privacy-act-1974

and

The Privacy Act prohibits the disclosure of a record about an individual from a system of records absent the written consent of the individual, unless the disclosure is pursuant to one of twelve statutory exceptions. The Act also provides individuals with a means by which to seek access to and amendment of their records, and sets forth various agency record-keeping requirements.

It's about as stupid as stereotyping an entire political party.

Fancy that.

Talking about the politicians

This revelation isn't shocking to me, the fact that this sort of thing gets past anyone involved is comical. Stupidity is clearly a trait, because otherwise this would be downright criminal if one was to believe that these people were actually competent.

about his tech guy

Czahor will be his chief technology officer

This is stupid on the part of bush and complelty unnecessary at this point in time, but any email or other correspondence sent to a public entity that is not covered by HIPAA or under similar specific privacy circumstances, is going to be considered a public document and retrievable upon request or in this case a preemptive mass dump. I do not feel sorry one bit for morons that think putting a privacy disclaimer on an email actually is enforceable when corresponding with a public entity.

This is unbelievably stupid of Bush to do, but why in the world would you send your SSN to the governor in plain text email?

I was wondering why thousands of SSN's would be disclosed, but I only see mention of one (some?) out of the emails. SSN's certainly shouldn't be sent in emails as a general thing (not that it makes this any better) -- and I am curious if those commenting about the public entity / inbox rule are correct. If someone FOIA'd the emails would Florida law say they can or must all be first parsed for personal information?

Florida is weird too. I have heard it suggested that EIN's (employer identification numbers) for small businesses should be treated as sensitive data, like SSN's, yet Florida publicly posts EIN's for all businesses in the state, on the internet.

What part of his staff not blacking out ssn's you don't understand?

I don't even get the point of e-mail dumpng. I really don't care how nice Bush was or wasn't to a few constituents. I care about his broader policies; the big picture.

Well, this is unusually dumb. Typically, Republican stupidity is limited largely to Reaganomics and base-pandering. Rarely does an attempt to appeal to the middle carry this level of poorly conceived ridiculousness.
