Smaller footprint, few areas for air penetration. I'm more surprised the car wash stalls held up as well as they did. Their design makes it very easy for high winds to push through and just rip them apart.

I'm pretty sure the building that collapsed was the office attached to the car wash judging by the way Jeff was describing nearby debris (and before it cut out again you could see network cable and general office stuff strewn about).

Yeah there was a table and other furniture. There's like no protection at all for the shed though. Winds of 140mph and not a scratch.

All this suspense and drama aside I do feel bad for all these people having parts of their lives just totally trashed.

Man, that's insane. The projected path is really nightmarish because it's looking like it's going to go north-northwest then loop back south while retaining a LOT of strength for the next day or two.

It's standard procedure for public schools to be storm shelters. It will be very odd if it wasn't one, even if there's not supposed to be anyone in the city.

when I was evacuated from South Beach Florida during a Hurricane the place they took everyone was a public school

this is often the places a city would use
