Being exposed unintentionally is very different from being exposed intentionally in a controlled environment. Taking some photos in provocative clothing at a photo shoot and effectively having your clothes ripped off in front of a crowd are not the same thing.

Even if she were a nude model, it's not the same thing.

There's a difference between a modelling shoot with a fashion magazine and having your phone/account hacked and stealing your personal photos to post online.
 
I'm not going to lie, the day it happened my friend's fiancee Kelly told me that some photos got 'leaked' so we all looked at them.

Once I realized what actually happened I felt pretty bad about myself. :/

She has an audience, most other violated persons cannot get their message out to more than their immediate peers.

Lawrence has the opportunity to raise awareness/get her word out to a much larger group of people than most.

My girlfriend saw them before I did. I was more interested in the series of events that led up to the leak than the actual images.

Honestly, most of those candid photos of celebs in various states of nudity don't do it for me. Like I get if you have some strange obsession with them, but I can just turn anywhere on the net to see nudes in much better quality or just straight porn. Not shitty camera images that are blurred, poorly lit or have some fucked up angle of celebs that don't look nearly as impressive. At least with most porn I have the benefit of knowing the person being filmed consented.
 
I feel bad for her. It's important everyone protect themselves in 2014. If you're a public figure, people will be targeting you, don't use cloud services to avoid this kind of thing. It shouldn't happen, not saying it's right, but people need to be smart. Or if she was hacked by people guessing her mother's maiden name...again, let's wise up

Not special treatment, but I was watching the news and even I was somewhat...annoyed isn't quite the word, but "bothered" by the fact that it takes something happening to a celebrity to actually get noticed. This wasn't by any stretch the first time it's happened, but it seems like the people in a position to do anything don't give a shit till it happens to someone high profile.

There should be laws to deal with this already. The next closest thing is revenge porn and isn't CA the only state will laws handling that (IIRC)?

But the annoyance isn't at her, it's at all the attention it's only just now getting. Hell, this isn't even the first celebrity nude hack in recent years.

No, what I'm not ok is people all of a sudden giving a shit about doxing because a celebrity has been hit. This stuff has been going on for years and regular folks have had their intimate stuff leaked out onto the internet. Jennifer Lawrence is not a special case and she needs to learn to move on and take the high road like what an average person getting doxed should do.

Do you understand the difference between someone consenting to allow highly stylized and sexy pictures of them to be viewed for the public, and someone not allowing a sexy photo of them - whether nude or not - to be allowed to be viewed for the public?

People tend to react when terrible things happen to people they know or feel close to. And people feel close to likable celebrities. You really think the best way to deal with these crimes is to just completely ignore it? I think the best way to deal with it would be for those who were affected to try and influence public perception and possibly legislation to make these things less frequent.

Still amazed at the people blaming the celebs. I still hear people say "if you didn't want nudes leaked you shouldn't have taken any pics, Its your fault" or that they are celebs and should be used to having no privacy.

Real shame this has to happen to so many people but i wish some people would be smart about this stuff and put it offline on an external drive or something, to have this up on a server of any kind seems dangerous.

Yeah, I agree, it's really annoying when people who are victims bitch and moan about bad things happening to them. Why can't they just shut up and accept that they don't have a say in what happens to them? Especially if they're celebrities. Because no celebrity has ever used their position to bring greater awareness and attention to problems before.

"Taking the high road". Gotta love the euphemisms people come up with to politely say "shut up and stop bothering me with something that doesn't affect me."

There were a nice amount of us Gaffers trying to explain to everyone why it was wrong to look at the pictures, and now, you can see exactly what we were trying to tell you.

Every single time someone looked at those leaked shots, her privacy was violated. Her and everyone else that was victimized by this.

I have friends and acquaintances that I have seen nude countless times for photography/drawing/painting purposes. That doesn't mean I should be able to look at them nude whenever I want, without permission, and expect them to not feel wronged or violated.

Consent is everything.

I don't think she's getting special treatment because of the hacking. I'd like to think anyone would have a bit of empathy for people who have personal pictures stolen and put up on the internet.

If you're asking why she's getting interviewed about it in a magazine, that's because she's a movie star.
 
You go girl, you're absolutely right to feel outraged of this, it is indeed a violation of her privacy.

But at this point, it's kinda done and over with, even her friends have watched it, and probably everyone who have posted in this thread - her nude pictures have become part of pop culture now, and I wouldn't surprised to hear Seth Rogen joke about it on Family Guy next season.

What we should do instead is to focus on preventing situations such as these from happening again, by reminding people of the dangers of cloud storage, pushing for cloud storage operators to increase security, teach people how to safely store sexy pics of themselves on a hard-to-hack device, or create new video-protocols with even higher encryption so that they can be erotically engaged with long-distance partners through a safer live video feed.

just because you work in the public eye doesn't mean you loose your right to privacy

and people acting like taking PRIVATE nude selfies for their partner deserve to have it splashed across the world media are disgusting and are absolutely no different to people that say someone who dresses somewhat provocatively deserve to be raped.
 
People are confused as to why her posing for a photo shoot to be published in a magazine and having her pictures stolen and distributed on the internet because they fundamentally misunderstand the concept of ownership and agency.

Essentially, people are entering into the thread honestly thinking they have free reign to any image of hers as a result of her being a celebrity. That she has ceded any/all ownership of herself as a visual image.

This is, of course, fucking bullshit as a concept :)

There is no hypocrisy in her stance. It absolutely follows.
 
More than anything I'm sure she's more embarrassed about the sheer amount of photos there were. It's one thing to take a couple and get caught out but taking hundreds of naked pictures of herself doesn't exactly shine her personality in a particularly good light.
