Jimmy Kimmel - Politically Correct Thanksgiving Pageant

Political correctness is almost a religion. Disagree or offend and you are the devil.

It's ironic how people complaining about overly sensitive people get sensitive themselves enough to make hyperbole statements like this. Is respecting others outside of your own self THAT difficult a concept to grasp?

That's wrong and you know it. People can change for the better and a lot of people actually do (LGBT sentiment has progressed a shitton just in the past decade). The problem comes in being utterly defiant when confronted for being offensive.

The subject matter plus it coming from Jimmy Kimmel... Gaf was obviously going to be pissed.

People are missing the point that the skit is not saying all those issues aren't important. A comedian's goal is to find the comedy in things that aren't normally funny. Laughing about a topic doesn't mean you're dismissing its importance.

Laughing about/mocking gender identity when we just elected the most homophobic VP in decades sure as hell seems dismissive especially when if I had to bet, I'd bet most Americans would agree with Kimmel's (scientifically wrong) hot take on gender issues.

More offended that it wasn't at all funny. Just bland and by the numbers. Jimmy hasn't tried in the last few years and this is pretty much solidifying him in the halls of one of the worst late night hosts. Right up there with Fallon and magic Johnson.

I genuinely really like Kimmel, but this is definitely some low-hanging fruit for comedy writing. It's like an edgy sketch from 25 years ago but now many would feel indifferent towards it. A throwaway sketch, for sure.

I will never understand how jimmy kimmel is a thing.

I mean, nothing against the show, but i just don't understand how someone who started in some stupid thing such as "the man show" ended up kinda becoming someone.

How the fuck does someone who helmed such a piece of shit like The man show even has a career?
But, he didn't start with The Man Show. He's been a comedian for, like, almost 30 years.

If it makes you feel any better, Doug Stanhope doesn't have a career, and Adam Carolla is pretty much a hasbeen.

The skit was meh, and I hate political correctness as much as the next rational human being, but having kids perform it made it have bad delivery. The writing itself wasnt very good either. 4/10

So shouting down any and all attempts at social progress like a banshee makes you rational, gotcha.

George Carlin also said non-voters have no blame for when bad leaders get elected. He got pretty stupid politically before he died and that slippery slope already-outdated video proves it. As if "lookism" is one of the arguments about PC culture today. As if rape victims would stop being called rape victims by the same people who actually take trigger warnings seriously.

If you want another one of his great insights here he talks about global warming

I like how you go immediately for character assassination and misrepresentation of his arguments. And btw Carlin had these views about moral policing and pro-censorship groups almost since the beginning of his career.

The comedy wasn't meant to be in the concept that people are free to choose genders other than "male" or "female," but that they were talking about a baby. Nobody, regardless of their gender, is gonna refer to a baby as something other than "he" or "she" because they're not sure what pronoun the baby prefers.

I'd say closer to 20 years ago, from an early draft of PCU.

While people go on about some politically correct agenda as if it's not a real issue, Native Americans are being tear gassed and attacked right now at Standing Rock.

Thanksgiving began in the fall of 1621 when a group of Native Americans joined with newly arrived English settlers to create a harvest feast together and protect each other from violence.

This year, as Americans pick out their turkeys and count their blessings, members of the Sioux Nation in Standing Rock, North Dakota, reported being attacked with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons in subfreezing temperatures as they protested an oil pipeline that threatens to contaminate their water and disrupt their sacred sites. Approximately 300 Native American and non-native protesters were injured in one 10-hour clash with law enforcement on Sunday evening, according to the Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council, and 26 were taken to hospitals with severe head and limb wounds, eye trauma, internal bleeding and hypothermia from being doused with water in 22-degree weather.

“Basically, it’s an act of war,” said Frank Sanchez, a delegate from the Yankton Sioux Tribe, in an interview with The Huffington Post

i dunno, this sketch was really just reaching for the low hanging fruit of politically over-correct strawmen, which simply do not exist to a meaningful degree.
beyond that it was just "lol vegans, lol liberals, lol millennials"

it was meh, and it's sad to see Kimmel bow down to our new alt-right overlords - When he should be in a position to actually promote meaningful change and tolerance.

I just don't like humor that ridicules the weakest of us just so the privileged get to have a laugh. Sure, make fun of gender issues - it's not like transgender people are among the most likely to commit suicide at an early age.

I don't see why anybody would watch Kimmel anyway. Guillermo is the most offensive representation I have seen of a Latino in TV for years, and i grew up watching Sabato Gigante so that is saying something.

Yeah, this is what people miss when they complain about political correctness. Maybe there is an element of political overcorrectness that the internet has magnified. I think there almost certainly is, and that's part of what has created the "bubble" everyone is talking about recently. "PC" people sometimes do not to listen to things they find offensive, and even seek to silence it in their physical and digital lives. I think that is a mistake. But at the same time it's important for everyone to keep in mind that real people are being affected by real oppression—the LGBTQ community, Muslims, Native Americans, and so on—and that further marginalizing them only feeds into that oppression. There is a difference between overcorrecting for things that might possibly offend, and recognizing that some things clearly, obviously, unambiguously feed into cultural narratives that have been built to marginalize or even destroy certain populations.

lol totally gaf

You are Gaf

Baby steps! Unless the word "baby" is ageist. And I won't specify a gender, despite the fact that a male baby might be able to take longer steps since males are generally taller (therefore having longer legs) than females. Omg, I hope this hasn't offended anyone.

I bet you have the biggest streetcred amongst nihilists.

I'm pretty torn on the whole political correctness thing. I can understand the sentiment in the video that taking it too far can get ridiculous and make it hard to interact with others, but at the same time not having ANY political correctness would mean it being okay for white people to say the N word or laughing at a transgender person when they say they identify as female and then just saying "hah, no you're just a weird dude".

I think there has to be a line somewhere obviously, but the question of where that line is is complicated and tricky, like most things in life.

On one hand you have racist and sexist slurs on the other it can get ridicolous.

Must be a tough choice.

May I laugh about your post?

Uhm...have you even watched it? He doesn't really say anything about global warming in it.

Congrats that was even less funny than the skit

Ya! I'm with you, edgy misanthrope dude, empathy is LAME.

How old is this clip? Fast forward X amount of years and we still don't call ugly people, "People will appearance deficits". A few psychologists probably used that term in some academic research because "ugly" is a tad crude for a journal.

What George doesn't mention here is that "political correctness" has been around forever. We've been modifying and changing speech to show more respect and treat people better forever.

At one point, it became politically incorrect to call black people a whole host of names.
Prior to that point, it was a common part of our lexicon.

Language evolves. It's not a terrible thing. People get a little overzealous.
I constantly hear that Obama for the past 8 years has championed political correctness and Trump is going to fix that.

I usually respond by asking, "Well what is it that you want to be able to say freely that you feel you can't? And why has it become inappropriate to say that during these last 8 years?"

More often than not, there's no real good answer because they know whatever they want to say is bullshit and disrespectful. They just don't want to be called out on it.

Was willing to give it a chance but got damn that was ass

If you're all going to spread your cheeks for a sketch at least do it for a good one

I imagine that these kinds of jokes (and the criticisms of GAF) work a lot better when you're a straight white man and you're imagining yourself taking shots at other straight white men who tell you to use the more respectful terminology on behalf of other gender/ethnic/etc... groups. For those of us that recognize that countries like the US (and GAF) have become more diverse and these diverse people are now able to be more vocal thanks to social media, these types of "stop being so uptight" jokes aren't going to be funny.

And Colin Jost is receiving heavy criticism on twitter for this SNL joke last week

https://twitter.com/ColinJost/status/800895697692327936/photo/1

In the aftermath, Jost felt the need to source his inspiration for the joke on twitter to calm down those he offended
I don't think it worked.
damn this is horrible

lol no it's just bad

something can be funny while being alt-right (e.g. south park is occasionally funny) but this is not

Again with South Park being "alt-right" nonsense.

It's quite funny, white dudes only ever recognizing when over white dudes talk about diversity.

Sadly, it makes sense.

Regardless of how you feel about the PC stuff, this was just not a well-written skit.

"We made this really stupid shit. Let's have it performed by little kids so everybody feels obligated to laugh"

Man, did you write this play? Or maybe star in it?

That implies that outrage culture will eventually stop, but it only seems to be getting worse.

Just look at this thread.

GAF is in no way representative of society or the country in general. Do not, I repeat, do not use this forum to reach any conclusions about the outside world.

There is virtually nothing funny in the writing, the presentation, or the execution.

This is the absolute low tier of comedy.
