Jimquisition (Oct. 6) - Shadiness of Mordor

Damn, now I feel kind of bad for buying the game. At least I'll be trading it back in.

I almost felt sick to my stomach while Jim was listing off all the terms of what they can and cannot talk about. And I almost went to school for Marketing, hahahaha. Wouldn't be able to live with myself.

EDIT: Sorry, this post was really overdramatic.

Well, there's marketing and then there's this...

I saw TB's tweets and I'm glad Jimmy brought it up, some real bullshit going on behind the scenes.

Just look at it this way, Monolith made a good game and you supported that. WB made some shit calls on this.

Nasty nasty stuff, hope this stuff continues to be exposed to discourage publishers from doing it. Stuff like this needs to be thrown back into the face of the publisher, only by making it a PR disaster will it ever stop (or, extremely unlikely, if EVERYONE in unison turned it down, and even then they'd possibly still consider it worth asking)

How in the world did they, best I can tell, acquire "middle earth" and "mordor" licenses and not "Lord of the Rings" licenses anyway? Extending that to critics is total bullshit of course, but how does that even happen? This is obviously set in the Lords of the Rings universe as everyone knows it. To not be able to mention that...publishers, man.

With some youtubers taking such deals, and gaming journalism being what it is, there is almost no one to trust anymore. At least there are still TB and Angry Joe.

I don't think it's fair to just assume since these deals exist there's no one on Youtube that's not affected.

I think revulsion is an appropriate emotional response.

I don't see the problem.

You don't have to sign that deal.

Yes, the content ID marking is annoying, but it's been happening with music for years.
I can totally understand why developers or publishers aren't too fund of internet reviewers (often extremely cynical or gimmicky) using their footage in their reviews.

Just because you are an Angry Joe on the Internet, doesn't mean i should automatically be ok with you using my footage.

I think we (BubbleGaf) often think these kind of practices affect ALL OF THE GAMERS, while in reality we are a minority of people who look (a little) further than what the Gamestop employee tells us to buy.

Don't slay me Gaf

God there is literally a defense force for everything these days. This is slimy tactic and you shouldn't be 'ok with it'. Its not ok for a company, regardless of how big they are, to lie or at the very least manipulate you just to sucker you out of some money.

If you're going to give your opinion of a game and have accepted a brand deal, that's just plain wrong. Even if it doesn't have as controlled a message as this Shadow of Mordor brand contract as quoted by Jim Sterling, it's still native advertising rather than any real critique.

Youtube is the wild west of gaming, no ethics, so I'm glad there are "sweeping changes to contracts" happening. Small steps.

Fuck me.

"Persuade viewers to purchase the game"
"Must not show bugs or glitches"
"Do not mention LoTR or Hobbit"

Not that it bothers me that I'll lose respect for and no longer tune in to a number of channels but to even have an agreement like this exist is a disgrace.

There are always going to be people who accept such terms for whatever reasons. I don't (overly) blame them.

It's whoever is responsible for even creating these deals that deserve the harsh criticism.

It also shows just how important pre-orders and day one sales are. Gotta get those dollars before the bad reviews and glitch reports come out. Fucking disgraceful.

So am I right in saying if you haven't accepted that initial deal, any YT video we post will be claimed and removed?

No, but you shouldn't just assume you get to use game footage.

You can still make videos without the footage, they can't do anything about that.

So if I want to review a copyrighted toy I can't use footage of it because the toy is copyrighted? Do I need to go into the middle of the forest to avoid any copyrighted content being in my videos? I don't think that's how it works.

Video games aren't movies. Watching a video of a game isn't anywhere near the same as playing it and there is zero reason for someone to take it down if you're using the content and making your own such as in a review or a machinima. Just like playing with lego isn't the same thing as watching a video of someone else reviewing a lego set or making a stop motion video. It doesn't make any fucking sense to have to have permission or some paid partnership.
