Jimquisition: Overwatch Porn (May 30, 2016)

If anything it further highlights the actual point of the video: If you create characters that actually resonate with people and have a distinctive look, more people will pay attention to them. Mass Effect is an RPG that revels in it's character interactions(even romantic in nature) to save the universe. Overwatch is a team based FPS with a solid backstory that's never once brought up in the game, yet still has the same effect. There's something to this.

The 819% increase "effect" seems like it is produced by basically any game with attractive female characters releasing, at least in recent years.

I mean, there probably is something going on because Overwatch has evidently produced a lot of porn. But the Pornhub graph does nothing to actually illustrate this.

Though I think part of why Overwatch porn is popular is because the cartoony style makes it seem surprising enough that people get talking about it. Whereas porn of Lara Croft is too obvious to go viral.

Because I'm still annoyed at pornhub's silly graph, here's a graph showing the google searches for "mass effect porn" in the run up to the release of Mass Effect 3

And this is an established series with a strong fanbase, not a new IP.

Not to deny that overwatch porn is a phenomenon. A comparison between "mass effect porn" and "overwatch porn" on Google trends illustrates it well.

Mass Effect would actually be a great example of my point. Diverse and interesting characters means a lot of porn.

But the pornhub graph and the "819%" doesn't actually give any information about the amount of porn. It just shows that people learning of the existence of characters increases the demand for porn of them, which is obvious.

The decline and fall of Final Fantasy porn is a little sad though

Definitely watch the video before saying "but rule 34 exists for everything!?!"

But yes, the Overwatch characters are extremely appealing

The game has a diverse cast which is going to have more appeal than your average western game that's more subdued in design. There's a lot of porn of various games already but Overwatch has added appeal specifically because of its chracter designs.

I can't look at Peach and Zelda the same way again.

On a serious note, the overrarching theme that games like OW actively inspire the imagination in all manner of ways is a good one. Fan engagement and creativity is a good thing, whether it takes the form of art, fanfiction, etc.

Very good video. I do think that, while Blizzard doesn't want the game to be associated with all the porn, it is ultimately a compliment to the game and the characters. A kinda weird, kinda gross compliment, but a compliment nonetheless.

Is it bad that I had already seen all those Roadhog, Genji, and McCree/Hanzo illustrations before this video?

Dammit Jim, that pounding it montage is...UGGGGGHHHHHHH

But yeah, I love the new surge of colorful shooters and sad Insomniac's Overstrike didn't come out around this time. Insomniac has to have a lot to say if given the chance about what happened.

There's a mission in Sunset Overdrive that explicitly takes a jab at the focus testing thing.

Was quite pleased to see someone else reminded of what Fuse was supposed to be in respect to tone and aesthetics back when it was still OverStrike (seeing Overwatch indeed made me think back to the potential that Insomniac squandered with that).

Good video. It's very clear now that people like color and character and things like that, and hopefully publishers see this too so we won't see another glut of grimdark grey-brown soldier man shooters like we did last generation. I like playing as specific characters with roles and personalities and styles that are unique to them.

Could've dropped a Splatoon mention though. Would've been nice.

Jim is like the older strange friend of my father- who is jokingly but secretly hitting on me and i would act like i wouldn't notice it, but would secretly enjoy it and would be very confused but also reluctantly very turned on- which I never had.

Edit: also very funny and thoughtful episode

Great episode. Jim folded a lot of different topics into this one.

Also, the "pounding it" joke. I love it. May it never be retired!

Overwatch fandom honestly reminds me alot of the splatoon fandom, where even before the game came out there were tons of fanarts adn animation and a abundance of porn, just everywhere

I mean, the resurgence of games with colorful art styles across the industry happened for the same reason why last gen was all about hyper-realistic brown and gray- because the people making decisions at most video game companies tend to want to follow whatever the big trends are. In the late 00s/early 10s most of the biggest games not made by Nintendo were done in very realistic settings and art styles- CoD, GTA, Assassin's Creed, etc. These days the games making the big money are all done in much more colorful/cartoon-ey art styles- League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Minecraft, and now Overwatch, so that's the trend everyone's going to be chasing after. In another 10 years or so people will start getting sick of colorful cartoon-ey shit, a new mega-franchise or two will come around in a realistic art style, and the cycle will begin anew.

I mean, there are other factors at play too, of course- the two categories in question target somewhat different audiences, technology/budget is a factor (realistic-looking games became popular after tech got to the point where games could actually kinda look real, the bigger "cartoon-ey" games were made on lower budgets and/or designed to run on phones/cheap PCs,) and so on. But in the end it's mostly a few people starting new trends via doing their own thing and a lot more people chasing said trends.

Fucking Overstrike! For like 3 years I've always been like "what was that funny shooter game announced years ago at E3? What ever happened to to it?" And I forgot the name and could never find it. Now I know what happened.

Last generation was also during the decline of the J-gaming scene, the ballooning of costs due to HD and other things, and that nasty echo chamber that had uninvested advice and neurotic worry sending careers, IP, companies, even entire sub-genres to their deaths right under the treads of genre leaders. Can't be err..well anything different! No one will give you money to do different!

It was a superstitious time. They burned witches at the stake! They ate people back then!

Also a time of a split in the gaming base, alot of younger gamers push for that "hardcore" experience of nothing colorful and very dreary because they couldnt be associated with the "casuals"

Thing is, Blizzard know they can't stop Overwatch SFM porn from continuing to happen. But they have to make a gesture showing that they tried, so they can protect their IP because SFM creators are using their models, and to counter anyone saying that their T-rated game is just a gateway to porn.

And the video would get ID claimed.

Speaking of, Jim didn't do his ID claim trapped he found out a while ago for this video?

Blizzard, EA/Insomniac, and Riot aren't exactly known for content ID douchebaggery, so I guess there wasn't really a need to.
