Jimquisition: Taking Candy From Dark Souls (May 2, 2016)

I don't get it. Neither Namco or From are strangers to developing or publishing games with online play. How could they be so clueless about this?

i think that's an exaggeration. cheating is a real problem and from hasn't dealt with it well at all but it's not rampant and does exist to some extent on consoles. i know lag switching is a problem there at the very least.
PC gamers handwaving away cheating is about as silly as console gamers handwaving away framerate issues.

You can claim it has never affected you. You can say it's fine. But it's worse on PC, it's more rampant on PC, it's harder to prevent on PC, and it's a real flaw for online PC games if the developer doesn't take an organized and nuanced approach to deal with it.

No one is attacking PC. We all know it's due to FROM and Bandai-Namco handling it poorly. What's the value in pretending it isn't ruining the DS3 experience on PC?

I feel like Jim whips up his videos over the weekend based on what's garnering the most outrage on GAF the week previous.

He's like the John Oliver of NeoGAF.

I posted this in one of the other threads on Dark Souls and cheating, but in DS1 for PC a hacker invaded me and killed all of my NPC's, so I had to restart my game.

Because it isn't? Sucks if you were affected by this and I hope From/Namco gets it together, but the vast majority of people got through the game with no issue. "Ruining the experience" is wild hyperbole.

They need to just lift all bans and turn off bans until they decide to fix it. Apparently the cheaters aren't getting banned anyway so what's the point in even having it active. Turn it off, let everyone play.

Did I understand the bit about correctly where some banned players could play but only with other banned players? Isn't that some sort of naughty boys room which some people think "that's great, they get a taste of their own medicine" but the naughty boys room can be a pain if you wind up in there due to malice (as is the case here) as not only does it have a much smaller player base but might have particularly undesirable ones too. There are also games where it is not explicitly mentioned.

Are there any spoilers on the video? My copy hasn't arrived yet and so far I've been able to avoid spoilers :)
I'm no Dark Souls person but the game footage didn't seem to have any story and served merely as an illustration of pvp and the audio didn't seem to have anything either.

I've heard some horror stories about cheaters being able to softban people they invade. That's some shit I haven't had to deal with since PSO.
For those that don't know in version 1 of PSO hackers could overwrite your character data and there was the classic moth to flame moment of "omg a telepipe in the lobby, let's see where this goes" *game crash*. I remember a SEGA presentation where they basically stated this only started when the came out in the US and Japanese players would prefer to be segregated to avoid these.

There were also lots of heavily glitched weapons going around.

One of the final times I played PSO involved playing online in a password protected lobby with a RL friend. We were about to head to Ruins, when another player entered our game, and without typing a word, ran up to us, killed both of us, took our weapons, and promptly left. We looked at each other speechless, went to Taco Bell, came back, and started playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 instead.

It's really sad and fucked up that innocent people suffer for the mistakes of others. BAMCO and From should step up their game regarding their cheaters problem and do something asap for the ones that were unjustly banned. (EDIT: even if that means unbanning everyone and going back to the drawing board regarding the cheaters)

I almost always agree with Jim but he's just hunting for clicks on this unwarranted issue.

I'm over level 100 and I haven't seen a single cheater yet. I've been playing online since launch and have been invaded and invaded others numerous times.

This needs to stop... saying anyone does something "for clicks" because you simply disagree with that person is idiotic, extremely childish and hampers the actual discussion (not even mentioning the stupidity of your argument: "didn't happen to me therefore it doesn't exist").

I still remember my first interaction with an invader in Dark Souls: PTE, he/she created a tornado of enemies inside undead parish, made them disappear, gave me a Parasite Egg, and a sweet two handed... Dragon Tooth smack.

Great video as always.

i'm not trying to handwave anything away, this is an obvious documented problem that needs to be fixed. claims that the consoles are cheater-free and the PC is absolutely rife with them are exaggerated and do nothing to improve the conversation.

are there more cheaters on the PC? i would guess so, and the cheats themselves are probably more extensive. but it's not ruining the experience on that platform, and it's not deflection to say that most people haven't had this issue.

I have fear everytime I play the game online, even with a backup save, because I don't know if that will ever suffice if Namco shitty cheat detection system and "manual" overview of the infragement will consider me innocent.

It's a shitty situation that has been going for weeks without From or Namco doing anything, not even after a guy spent 6 hours softbanning hundreds of people....

Good for you, but there was a guy this weekend that softbanned, literally, hundreds of players. The fact you didn't get a cheater dosn't mean is an "unwarranted issue".

Check Steam forums, the GAF thread or the stream of a damn hacker banning people for hours without punishment (and still does), and tell me is an unwarranted issue.

Wonderful, so basically cheaters have broken not only the games mechanics, but broken the intended interactions between players as well that give the game its own life and flavor. And then Namco/From punishes the victims of this too? This reminds me of early PSO where people were far more social and happy to team with other random people until cheating and griefing took off and essentially ruined a huge aspect of the game. Only at least then the victims didn't get banned unlike in this case. Towards the end, everyone locked their game instances and people only played with friends they already had beforehand instead of making new ones in the game like intended.

Yeah I had invalid game data when I first started the game and then eventually I got penalized. Apparently because of DSpadder software.

So now I can't play the game with my friends at all. Had to do a family share and make a second account just so I could play the game as intended.

Really pissed off I lost my lv 101 character AND can't even play on my main steam account.

I wish there was some kind of amnesty from their broken bullshit detection system.

Support was zero help as well.

Now I gotta worry about being invaded at random by a cheater and having my second account banned too.

Fuck this dev.

You've got Scamco Gonna Scam in full effect with shit-tier PR.

And its from cheaters not only being unkillable/etc but getting innocents banned.

The combo is alarmingly clear
plus it proves Jim can do DS3 vids that ain't manufactured conTROVersy to bait the silly and desperate.

Is this still a problem? This is insane. I saw a bit of that livestream a bit back of a guy just softbanning people but didn't know how it worked.

Whats more fucked up is that apparently this was an issue in Dark Souls 2 compounding the situation.
