Cofounder and creative director Joe Madureira departs THQ-owned Darksiders studio after seven years to "move on to new adventures."

If a third Darksiders is made, it will be done so without Vigil Games cofounder and creative director Joe Madureira. The developer announced recently that he is parting ways with the Austin, Texas-based developer after seven years and two games: the original Darksiders and its sequel.

"I'm afraid the time has come for me to move on to new adventures," he said in an update to his Facebook page. "I could not be more proud of what we achieved, or the awesome people who helped build up this studio. I can safely say Vigil's future is in very good hands, so expect only awesomeness down the road. This feels surreal…I miss the place already."

Madureira said he will talk in detail about his next endeavor in the coming months. However, in the short term, he said he is focusing on "banging out a bunch of comics," but did not elaborate on this.

Madureira founded Vigil Games in 2005 alongside David Adams, Marvin Donald, and Ryan Stefanelli. The company was acquired by THQ in 2006 for an undisclosed sum. Prior to creating Vigil Games, Madureira spent 20 years at comic book company Marvel, where he worked on the Deadpool, Uncanny X-Men, Ultimates, and Avenging Spider-Man franchises.

Epic, Irrational, Bioware, Vigil. It's a mass exodus! What do they know that we don't? This is like when birds fly inland before a tsunami.

I love what he brought to both games. Having an accomplished comic artist as a company principle really made their games stand out. Is this a sales issue or something else? I'm half way through Darksiders 2 and think it's a good game.

Wait, who left Imsomniac?

Sad to see him go, I'll be interested to see what the studio's future games look like though now.

Maybe a lot of people think that the generational change is a good moment to depart, it's only logical though, if they want to leave it would be pointless to get busy with all the fuss of next-gen development.

No Darksiders III =/

Bye Strife + Pestilence

Also Darksiders IV

*dreams* DSIV = Diablo Clone with 4 characters of orgasmic fun ; ;

It was on sale at 50% off (Steam and Amazon) roughly seven weeks after release. Take from that what you will.

Hell it was $30 with Toys R' Us promotion 1-2 weeks after release
They were "Limited Edition" copies too

Buy 2 $59.99 game, pay only $59.99 *select 10 titles*
Got Sleeping Dogs with that deal

Danm

already

DAT Scheduling

I remember I had #1-5, fucking skyrocketed in price during the heyday, I think I had the variant covers for #2 and #3 also

Don't have the hard numbers at hand, but the impression I got from NPDGAF was that it sold below expectations, yeah.

Didn't help the Limited Edition DLC was held hostage and archaic way of getting DLC activated

Also their 30, 60, 90 day DLC went out the fucking window

I still dont know why the internet rage with DS2, Im enjoying the game A LOT, PC version looks amazing even if missing PC options, I just forced some shit except AA.

Huge bummer, but kind of expected, though I would have predicted the studio were to close rather than this. I guess that could still happen.

Joe Mad's art work is incredible, and the design of Darksiders is its best feature, which is really saying something as they are both great games. Gamers today suck. We don't support anything good and new anymore.

Meanwhile CoD continues its descent into being less than mediocre, and this year's title will sell more than ever. Yay.

Darksiders 2 Must Hit ’4 Million Copies’ Sold For Darksiders 3 To Happen

I think it's safe to say DS2 won't reach this number and the DS franchise is dead at the moment. Joe Madureira's departure is just further confirmation of that.

This is part of what's wrong with this industry right now. Now don't get me wrong I really liked the Darksiders series and have the Wii U version of 2 on pre-order. That said though making a game where you have to sell 4 million copies to be able to do a sequel is just, well fucking insane. I'm guessing from that number that it had to sell around 2 million full price to make a profit.

Developers/Publishers need to start making games again that have expectations of 500K for the average game, specially for full priced sales. So many games drop/go on sale/etc this gen, that it seems so many people wait now adays.

Cripes, 4 million copies, that's a lot.

True, but those sorts of deals seem to be somewhat common among US retailers.

After such focus and character evident in Darksiders I, I wonder what really went wrong with the development of Darksiders II? Not just in execution, but in planning. Who really thought it would be a great idea to just assume, in this industry, they'd probably get a 3rd game (and a 4th!). Then said just make DS II a pre-quel / parallel game without a real ending, piss off fans who wanted to see what happened after the insane (but well done) cliffhanger in Darksiders I.

It's always weird to see when a focused developer that's on the ball with one game, seems to lose their minds and forget how to plan a game at all on their very next project. Especially when most of the same creative staff are still in power.

Now that the afterglow has dissipated from the new release of DSII, and its new car smell is almost gone, what did people think of it?

I rarely even unwrap games that i know are going to be over 12 hours. I just beat this game yesterday after about putting in 32 hours. I played it in 2 to 3 hour spurts due to family taking all my time but i came back to it so that tells me it was pretty damn good to keep me coming back. My gripes are i wish there was more combat and a little less puzzles but that is what the crucible is for. I would give it a solid 8.5 to 9. I had some technicl difficulties that caused me to lose some great weapons and 1 section of the game was a little lame but it was the shortest section of the game.
