John and Garnett: First For Gamers Podcast - UP YOURS

You should listen to an episode. Two is all they need here.
Agreed. The extra interaction from the chat is all the extra that's needed to keep it lively and moving.

Good luck to John. He's done well everywhere he's gone. I would think he could write his own ticket at this point.

I can relate to Garnett and John problems to find a job. A year ago I was in this situation and was not easy as I was thinking. When you are over 35 years is hard to get a senior position. What helped is that I am a jack of all trends with digital, doing art, html, motion and 3D, so I get a job as "senior hardhat".

FYI the reason digital versions of games in the UK are more expensive then retail because of a quirk in the UK market.

In all markets Sony sells all games digitally at MSRP(well in the UK they call it RRP Recommended Retail Price). The rational being "they don't want to piss off retailers and undercut them"

The problem with it in the UK is nothing sells for RRP. Every retailer sells games at launch for under RRP.

This results in the digital version being more expensive.

Like this: Destiny PS4 on PSN in the UK: ÂŁ54.00

Amazon.co.uk: ÂŁ45.00

As opposed to Amazon.com which is a whopping 3 cents cheaper.

It's amazing. It's been however many years since 1Up Yours was around and I can still listen to these two dudes talk about games all day. I really hope this format sticks around in some incarnation.

I think John has lost his mind a little on that Tomb Raider discussion, how many games really sell 8m units? AC? COD? Not that many.

4m units its a really big seller title if that doesn't get you in a good position in sales then maybe you need to evaluate your predictions or your budget.

That said, I have no issues with Microsoft doing what they did, is a business, they offered a deal, SE took it, it's the way it works I am not personally offended by any of it, when the game comes out on PS4, if it's good I'll probably get it, if not, then I probably won't

He absolutely lost his mind.

Sounded like an AAA apologist, if they cant sustain the business model without being bought out for timed exclusivity (as he implied) then it's a fucking bad business model! But we know it would have been on PlayStation and PC had Microsoft not bought it, so no, Microsoft moneyhatting was not required for development. I am pretty sure Square had refocussed their expectations when it came to sales, being moneyhatted was just a win/win for them.

What are you guys on about? 'A few copies' is just another way of saying '6.5 million copies.'

It's no surprise that after such an unsuccessful game that SE would have to go begging for money for their next game. I think it's totally plausible to state that perhaps this game would have only happened with MS's intervention.

Also John and Garnett, if reading articles from writers trying to represent their readers and not the corporations they're covering bothers you as much as it does me, you should stick to pieces by aspiring games journalist Ben Kuchera:

John is much more on the side of pure business, zero consumer relationship. I feel that a job at EA would fit perfect for him.

I don't think it's dead, but it was at a point tied into John's job, and he no longer works there. It's just not something they are going out of their ways to do anymore, and we will get episodes when it fit's in both guys schedules.

It's done? I hope not I really enjoyed this show

Quick question

These podcasters always say "show support, subscribe on itunes"

But I subscribe on podcast Republic (formerly iTunes podcast player for android)

Does that mean I'm not helping the cause?

I would call in by my NY accent is too thick I think

This isn't the first time he has jumped on a "sinking ship" (Gamepro was the first)

Wonder how long he lasts at this. He made Gamepro a much better magazine, but it still died.

I think they should be selling digital games for the physical wholesale price. Asides from pissing off retailers trees no reason not to be.

Is this dead? :(

Yes, Garnett said so on DLC. Garnett on Games is done as well, altough he does want to do one final episode of that.

It's done? I hope not I really enjoyed this show

Yeah, you are not supporting the shows in that regard. This is really an itunes only thing. Don't worry too much about it.

I thought both these podcasts were doing okay in terms of dloads, and then suddenly they're gone. I understand they have other obligations now, but then what was the point of even starting them if they knew there was a high chance they would be pulled away rather soon after starting them? Just disappointing, I guess.

Visibility and having something to do in your free time, I guess.

^That's actually really cool, especially given how passionate he's seemed about development of late.

Congrats, Garnett!
