Non-dairy milk?

0383_lqe1.gif

Sorry, I had to. Cow milk is the only type of milk I could drink, anything else just seems weird to me.
I said the exact same thing till my boyfriend tricked me into drinking almond milk.

I haven't turned back since, i even enjoy Soy Milk more then bland ass normal milk.

Homogenized, packaged milk is the biggest bullshit ever. It's not even close to what real fresh milk tastes like.

I feel bad for people who love milk but have never had real fresh milk.

Edit- oh and this other soy milk etc bullshit... Sigh. It's just white water.

I drank fresh (warm even) milk straight of cow's udder. Kinda like that, but farther away (...):

It was good (I think; i was young), but it still doesn't change the fact that dairy can induce acne and most people cannot process milk properly (some are even lactose intolerant).
And you probably never drank soy milk (extract), but rather just "drinks".

/edit
also, homogenized milk doesn't equal packaged milk.

I've been vegan for over six years now, but I stopped with dairy products about six months before I went vegan. I used to get throat infections all the time, and my then-girlfriend (and now-wife) insisted it was because of dairy. I brought this up with a doctor, and he shocked me by saying it was probably true, at least in my case.

Since I went dairy-free, I've had:
- soy milk (never liked it much, since I always felt a bit off after having it)
- hemp milk (something about the texture grosses me out)
- almond milk (meh - I don't love it, but I'll tolerate it)
- rice milk (alright, if a bit watery)
- oat milk (better than you'd think)
- flax milk (my current favourite)

I really want to try hazelnut milk, but I don't think I've ever seen it for sale.

I like almond, I like the mild-ish taste it has.

Oat milk is pretty good too, it's not that common around here (or I don't look hard enough). I sort of want to try flax milk now, didn't know they had it.

I feel like trying out some flax milk as well, it's the only non-dairy milk brought up in this thread that I haven't tried.

Milk is fucked up. It's for baby cows.

I am a big almond milk fan. I still enjoy cooking with milk ingredients but I never straight drink the stuff anymore.

It's one of those things that is really easy to give up.

Almond milk is best milk.

Haven't went back to dairy milk since I first tried it. Usually get the unsweetened vanilla, but sometimes I'll get the sweetened variety.

Cool idea for a thread, and good of you to get the information out there. I haven't touched milk in about 6 months since I stopped drinking things with calories and haven't missed it.

Occasionally, if I have extra calories to waste at the end of the day, I'll enjoy some soy or almond milk. Gotta keep an eye on those sugars, though ;-)

When I have my kids, on the rare occasion they want milk, I'll give them almond milk and we all agree it almost tastes like chocolate milk.

I've really come to enjoy almond more than soy. I should try making my oatmeal with it some morning!

People are so critical of stuff they perceive as healthy. I enjoy regular milk the most, but precisely today I had Trix with soy milk and it was great.

Oh man, I was fucking terrified the first time I successfully convinced myself to try non - dairy milk. I had to keep psyching myself up!

Talk about being apprehensive for a stupid reason.

Yeah if you can find it OAT MILK is so awesome. It definitely doesn't attempt to replicate dairy milk like soy products too, it tastes more fibrous and oat-y. Highly recommended.

I like regular milk, 1% or 2% because of the taste, and the nutritional value of it. Good for getting my protein needs. Also it has more calories in it, which is important to me because I'm a poor college student.

Soy milk seems to me to look like the only other alternative, but someone once told me something about staying away from soy milk because of something about increasing your estrogen levels?

(also the goodhemp site says <0.1g protein but the post says 1.3g, which made me a little confused but I'll trust the website)

If you're in the US, you probably should stay away from soy. In Europe/UK though, our equivalent of the FDA has a lot more power and any sort of estrogen soy milk would probably be banned.

I'll take a look at the stats of the various milks, it's possible that they've changed the nutritional content since I've made the thread.

Did anyone else get a Chrome malware detection alert trying to enter this thread?

I have to drink soy milk with my cereal due to skim upsetting my stomach for an unknown reason. The added vanilla is nice.

although i eat cheese, i haven't had dairy milk in about 5 years now and have sort of slowly progressed through the alternatives in that time:

soy (gave me bad skin).
rice (drank this for years, but its a bit too watery).
almond (what i have now, better than rice but not perfect).

i wish i could have the taste of almond milk but with the consistency of soy. the idea of cows/goats/whatever milk still makes me want to gag.

^ Can't speak for everyone since I'm not against dairy milk and I like it enough, but I find it fun to find food alternatives to stuff I enjoy, some of them have a different taste that I like while also liking regular milk. It's just more options, really.

I love almond and hazelnut milk the most too, but I'd stop short of saying either taste like Nutella or chocolate milk. Both have a nutty flavor when going down that makes them delicious though.

Edit: Unsweetened Almond/Hazelnut milk is really good for carb watchers too, which is part of the reason I picked it up.

I'm not trying to save the world or protest something, I drink sweetened soy milk the way it s meant to be.. as part of a delicious northern Chinese style breakfast! I've tried to substitute steamed milk, doesn't work. Has to be soy milk.

Love almond milk, don't understand how people drink the sweetened versions of it though, the regular "unsweetened" versions are sweet enough!

If you tried the sweetened kind, I definitely understand. Get unsweetened vanilla or plain; it's a world of difference. Tastes closer to dairy milk and less like dessert.

This is a pretty old bump, so I want to state for the record that I am now totally on board with Almond/Coconut blend. Oh, and that I am slowing losing my tolerance for lactose. I had some frozen yogurt the other day and it messed me up pretty good.

Wait, do you mean almond milk or hazelnut milk, or combination almond/hazelnut milk. Because if almond/hazelnut milk exists, that sounds delightful and I must have it.

Also, I'll echo Cymbal Head. This:

is awesome.

7 months later, I'm completely in love with coconut milk. Oh man, so good. I expected a coconut flavor, but there isn't one. Every once in awhile, I'll add it to something and the coconut flavor will come out, but typically no.

My fave:

I don't drink it straight, just on cereal and to cook with, so I usually can't tell much of a difference between sweetened/unsweetened. The chocolate is really good too.

Not a fan of the vanilla flavored, but I don't like any of the vanilla milk substitutes. Silk's coconut milk is disgusting, but I typically dislike all their products.

I have a few cartons of Almond Milk from Trader Joe's. The unsweetened vanilla one is okay but I do prefer the sweetened version by far. I usually go for the ones not kept in the refrigerated section since I'm the only one drinking it really. I use the unsweetened version when making protein shakes as it helps with keeping it a bit less sweet.

Soy milk, I prefer the Vitasoy versions of it but I can drink Silk or any other brand. Strangely, I love Kikkoman's green tea & coffee soymilks, those are great but I don't buy them that often.

Rice milk is eh... Coconut milk is pretty good but I wouldn't drink it if I had other options.

That said, I still go for my cow milk and have started drinking the cream-top variety from Straus Farms, which is freaking delicious. Originally went with whole for a half gallon, but I have two 2% gallons in the fridge. I'll probably go back to the whole milk once I finish off both gallons.

I have Silk Almond milk with my cereal every morning. Tastes best when I add cherries to the cereal. Delicious. I can't wait for cherry season.

This is very true. Many who find regular milk gives them gas or are flat out intollerent can actually tollerate Raw milk.

Problem is Raw Milk just can't be commercialized unless you live close to a farm. And it only lasts like a day or so.

I've had some and really nothing else matches it. I've slowly reduced my milk intake now but gonna try unsweetened almond milk for my cereal and see how it goes.

Totally agree. I bought the sweetened type on accident once and it was like drinking a milkshake. Actually had to pour it out as it was just way too sweet.

I've had fresh raw milk. Nope, not my thing. I'd legit have any other kind of milk, it's way too creamy and I hate, hate, hate milk skin.

milk is my FAVORITE but it gives me gas and I'm getting pretty sick the more I read about the way animals are treated in our factory farm system.

so I haven't had milk really for the past month. I don't gas gas gas anymore. My roommate has some vanilla almond milk and I really like it.... though it did almost taste like a milkshake/dessert to me, so I'm thinking he got the sweetened kind.

I'm mainly sticking to water, but I will pick up some almond milk every now and then.

How about Human breast milk?
My wife pumps sometimes and I'll drink what's left after our daughter is full since the milk doesn't keep for long unless frozen. It's pretty good actually.

I also used some to make some mac and cheese when we were out of regular milk, haha.

Almond milk in coffee or hot chocolate is pretty fantastic.

Never tried in coffee (I prefer half and half) but in a hot chocolate is awesome. There's a juice and coffee bar place in downtown Pleasanton that makes a peanut butter chocolate smoothie using almond milk. It brings out the nuttiness of the peanut butter even more and gives the chocolate some depth too - love it.

Had a relapse from when I first started using Almond Milk back in July. Went back to regular milk for a few weeks and my digestive problems came right back. Almond Milk is back in my fridge and I intend to keep it that way.

I can still eat cheese though, which is good because I fucking love cheese.

Oh, they have unsweetened, too? Fifteen grams of sugar per serving is a bit much for my taste in milk!

Non-dairy milk? Blasphemy.

Grass-fed raw milk forever.

I do love grass-fed. It tasted sort of weird at first but now... <3

Switched to using half rice milk for my protein shakes. Regular milk made great protein shakes, but that much milk (28 oz sometimes twice a day) was too stressful on my digestive tract. It is much better than using just water, I have to double up the protein powder though.

I've briefly dabbled with almond milk. Was pretty good. Just has been difficult finding the standard non-vanilla one.

But I have no aversions to standard 2% either.

I really like any alternative to milk since dairy tends to mess with my system a bit. But I hate how expensive they are. I sure would like to try the hemp milk though. Sounds really interesting.
