I really like any alternative to milk since dairy tends to mess with my system a bit. But I hate how expensive they are. I sure would like to try the hemp milk though. Sounds really interesting.

Saved a bunch by getting a big box of rice milk at CostCo, but it still is more expensive than normal milk.

If you have a Trader Joe's/Aldi's/Fresh & Easy, check there as they should have alternatives that aren't too expensive.

For instance, Trader Joe's sells all of their Almond/Rice/Hemp milk for roughly $2.50 for half a gallon, whereas cow milk or soy (usually in the refrigerated section) can vary in price due to size/type. So don't be afraid to try out the 'non refrigerated' ones, which is kinda funny as you have to refrigerate them upon opening anyways.

Here's what the Trader Joe's ones look like:

Have been thinking about going vegan for a while now, I don't care much for food in general I'll eat whatever fills me up so I'm not emotionally attached to meat, as long as the replacement doesn't make me want to throw up like protein bars.

The one thing that sucks is finding a replacement for milk and eggs though as far as protein goes and the fact that you need milk to make so much shit. Glad this thread is around for milk alternatives but I don't know how vegans can gain large amounts of muscle without meat/eggs.

I love milk. My favorite drink on earth. Have been drinking about near half a gallon every day of my life, and its always been full 4% cow milk. But I'll try those non dairy ones just for a change to see how it is.

You have to pry dairy milk from my cold, dead hands, but I'm not afraid to experiment with trying other milk. Every time I go to the grocery store, I'll try something new - usually when I want to be healthier. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not, but at least I've learned what I can tolerate for the most part really.

I've been drinking milk for the past decade and I've had no problems. I think I'll stick with the superior dairy version. If I didn't drink milk, I would probably be a stick. For someone who has a fairly fast metabolism, it's vital to me :O

Protein powder bro.
To be fair, I am a vegetarian so I still consume my fair share of dairy/eggs, but I think I could do it on a vegan diet.

I'd have to compensate with a lot of pea-protein shakes though.

Good for you. You posted this in a thread about milk alternatives because?

That's actually really helpful since there is a Trader Joe's near me. $2.50 isn't bad at all for a half gallon either! Thanks! :D

No problem. I think it's around $2.50 (or maybe $2.70, can't remember) but price-wise, it's really great as it's still a bit cheaper than the refrigerated stuff.

I still drink milk, but I've been slowly enjoying some nut milk alternatives.

The other day my wife made hazelnut milk! It's super easy to do at home. Just soak the nuts in filtered water overnight, blend them and strain through a cheesecloth. You can add a tiny bit of honey to the finished milk for a kiss of sweetness.

It was really amazing and I couldn't believe how fresh and rich it tasted from the fridge. It sorta blew my mind, it was far far better than any of the nut milks I have tried from the store.

My little brother used to have a dairy allergy when he was young (that he grew out of), so as a kid we would have soy milk and regular milk in our fridge, and I had a glass of soy milk on very rare occasions.

Soy milk is wretched. Whole milk all day, man.

Yeah I have to make some myself soon.

I'm all about the Almond Milk. Incredible, and naturally sweet enough thats its fantastic in tea.

Also Almond Butter > Peanut butter.

I however have never tried help milk, i'll have to give that a try.

My wife always gets those containers of almond milk from Trader Joes, but I've never tried it. I'm definitely gonna try it now, just out of curiosity.

I really like soy milk. :/ *shrug*

I'm yet to try any others, too much $$$ for me right now.

Again, if you have a Trader Joe's/Aldi around, the milk alternatives are not really expensive. Heck, I just saw almond milk for $1.99 at Whole Foods today. Way cheaper than the cow milk I bought (which was $4.69 for a gallon).

Do it as it's a great alternative to cow or if you just want something different. I do like almond (need to find hazelnut) as I enjoy the slightly nutty taste to the milk really.

Almond milk for me. Drinking cow's milk not only makes me sick, but it's not natural. A shame everything in stores has "modified milk ingredients" in it.

The various juice are ok, with hemp being my favorite (great in coffee). It isn't milk though. By definition, milk comes from mammary glands.

Why do these milks always have little white blobs in them? They tend to be more prevalent after it's been open for a couple days. Open one of them and put it in the fridge for a couple days then pour it on some dark colored cereal and you'll see the little white blobs. It's not because it's past it's best before date.

I still drink 1% milk, soy, and almond milk. Give love to all types of milk. Not coconut milk, though; I tried and failed to like it.

Right now I have almond milk in the fridge. Some of it is the chocolate kind, which is great but a bit heavy on the sugar so I'm not always in the mood for it. What I prefer is unsweetened regular almond milk, or possibly the unsweetened vanilla kind, and if I want to flavor it more I'll put in some coffee creamer.

A good example is unsweetened almond milk with a bit of York peppermint patty-flavored creamer. Brings the taste to a nice minty place while still not feeling too heavy.

Humans lived on animal fats for almost all of our existence's. It isn't until recently that we've switched to these non-natural plant fats and we're having all sorts of health problems. Animal Fats = good. Mechanically produced Vegetarian Fats = BAD.

You don't have to go without. Personally, I think I'd kill myself if I could never eat custard or ice cream again. I keep these in my purse at all times.

I don't even bother with the medicine. We just started buying this milk a few years ago:

Cannot even taste the difference at ALL and its lactose free. Enjoy our cereal and any and everything else we cook that calls for milk; with no problems at all. Works for us.

Only thing we noticed is that once the seal is broken, it goes bad faster than normal milk. But on average we grocery shop every 2 weeks or so, so its not a problem.

I'm a huge fan of this brand and almond milk. I drink soy on occasion but almond definitely gets my favorite. Had rice but felt it was little too watery or watered down.

I always had issues with diary in general, cheese, ice cream, even fucking yogurt. After a horrible stomach pains and diarrhea marathon (something over 6 hours worth jesus), I quit diary for good. Ice cream is the worse for me because I love some flavors that almond milk don't have yet available with (reese's for example) but I avoid cheese so much its annoys my husband when he orders pizza lol. I'll have a slice every now and then but I cannot overindulge on it like I used to. :( I loved pizza too.

But thankfully I've never had a happier stomach/bm until after quitting cow milk.

Man, a world w/o pizza...

Ever try that vegan cheese or just a cheesless pizza?

Silk is definitely one of the best brands for soy and almond milk. I have Almond Breeze in the fridge, but Silk would be the other option.

Yeah, I learned the trick is to eat it with a lot of other stuff with it. (Breadsticks or other toppings) Just as long as the cheese isn't the dominate ingredient (or super elastic or super heavy urg, I'd always order light cheese or thin crust), I can tolerate it but even then, I'll need some carbonated soda to settle my stomach then. I've vomited pizza before too and I've to learn that other members of my family cannot tolerate pizza either. Something something acidic and cheese combo being BAD.

Not american...

Ahh, then wouldn't making it fresh be cheaper perhaps?

I believe someone posted a recipe for making fresh hazelnut milk and I'm sure almond milk is made in a similar fashion. Google probably has tons of links for making it at home.

Never noticed as I usually give both my cream top cow milk and almond milk a good shake before pouring.

I have always been a big milk drinker.

But I really wanted to get off milk. I bought some Soy Vanilla milk and HOLY SHIT.

It is fan-fucking-tastic. Beats milk completely. And honestly, it tastes so close to milk that I don't even seeing myself going back to normal milk.

I mean, vanilla soy milk tastes great in cereals, I put some in my coffee to add some vanilla flavour, dunking cookies. Shit just tastes good in everything, plus it has the added benefit of not being milk.

Non-dairy milk? Blasphemy.

Grass-fed raw milk forever.
Yeah but where can you buy it? I'm really trying to get away from processed corn products and corn fed animals. I read that for milk to get an organic label it has to be grass fed for at least 30% of the year. I'm going to swing buy trader joes tomorrow and try some unhomogenized organic milk, but I haven't seen any milk that's labeled 100% grass-fed.

I've seen them at Whole Foods & Sprouts Market, looked like they had all varieties: whole, 2%, 1% & nonfat.

I've been drinking this and quite like it, especially since the farm is local:

The 2% is great but I do prefer their whole milk more. The cream top milk from Trader Joe's is great too.

I pretty much drink exclusively soy milk now. I'm mildly lactose intolerant and almond milk is expensive.

Very similar situation here, I would love to get another type of milk to try (especially Almond milk after reading this thread) but its just too expensive for my lifestyle at the moment.

I don't have an allergy to milk but I tried them all and Almond Silk is where it's at. I like it mainly because it doesn't go bad after a week like milk does, but it's the only milk substitute that actually tastes smooth and creamy.

My mother in law won't drink dairy milk so whenever we cook something that requires a milk/cream it's always Soy. Knowing what something like cream stew tastes like with real milk I just can't help thinking the Soy version tastes like ass.

So they started selling Silk Coconut milk around here and I'm a convert. I love the slight coconutty taste and it's both more refreshing and creamier than soy and almond milks.

Recently switched to Almond milk. I have a question, if someone is allergic to nuts, this can lead to an attack right?
