if its possible to describe something about the episode that particularly stood out without spoiling, what would it be?

It's a look at what Dollhouse would be like if it got 4 or 5 seasons. And it makes me hope that it will.

holy hell. just finished it and that was so good. at first i was like eh, wtf is this, but then...wow. i dont know why, but i started tearing up at the end. what a good song

Whoa, that episode just blew the season finale out of the water.

QFT

Fuck, so much better than the season finale that was broadcasted. Was a bit WTF at first. Honestly, the most emotional episode thus far. Really tugged at the heart strings at the end. Soo excited we're getting a season 2! :D

HOW did the 13th episode get leaked?! It's way before Comic-con so the timing is rather unexpected.

Hmm I liked Epitaph One. It actually helps to create a transition between the 2 seasons by helping the audience ask MORE questions. :D

Wow, like seeing an episode of Season 5 Angel after Season 1's just aired.

November was Millie, right? I thought she was freed.

Here's a review of Epitaph One. Spoilers abound.

Caroline is actually still there, but she can also speak Russian. I thought that was awesome and I really hope the show goes in this direction in later seasons. Echo/Caroline is also having headaches which I'm guessing is a byproduct of the imprinting not fully working.

I'm... so confused? How would that even look?
Is there another body with the Caroline imprint? Or is Caroline inside Echo now? And I guess this is where the April Fools' Day thing comes from...

Well, at the end of the "season" (before this extra episode)
Alpha took Echo and the imprint from the Dollhouse. Long story short (since this is what the episode revolves around), he nearly destroys Echo's backup of her original personality "Caroline" (Echo/Caroline being one and the same, basically) but Echo saves herself.

It's safe to assume that this backup is still in the Dollhouse and Echo's headaches/"glitches" eventually (if still stuck in the abandonded Dollhouse) comes to realize the imprint proccess from having the "ghetto" imprint of Alpha done on her so long ago
.

Makes sense, a little bit.

Wow. Epitaph One FREAKIN' RULED. I CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE DOLLHOUSE. They could of launched an entire new spinoff from that episode alone.

was this really done on a shoestring budget? because everything, even the quality of the squibs, seemed better than most of the previous eps.

Nope. It's a DVD/Blu-Ray ONLY release.

And iTunes.

Yes, it was. From all of these impressions, it gives me huge hope for the next season. Can't wait for the DVD to arrive...

Ugh, now I'm going to have to scour the internet to find a good summary. Thanks GAF...

EDIT: Oh wow, there's a good one on Wikipedia (that will be taken down, obviously). Still confused, but wow, I can't wait to see this.

Well, the kids have to learn about Tek War sooner or later.

I ran into Miracle Laurie (November) waiting in line last night to see Harry Potter, at the downtown Burbank AMC 16. NO ONE but me recognized her at all, but we chatted for a minute or so about the show. She was very nice. :D
Is she gone from the show then? Or will she get wormed back into the fold somehow?

I wanted to throw my two cents in here for awhile...

I watched the show when it was on air, through downloading HDTV rips off the net, and enjoyed it for the most part. I am glad it's coming back for a 2nd season... I hope the show remains of the quality or higher like the last half of the season was. The supposed season finale that aired was kinda a letdown but the major major fuckup in my eyes, because it wasn't really the season finale cuz Fox were being dumbfucks and wouldn't air that 13th episode. I am in the process of getting my hands on a copy to view... I will buy the blu-ray when it comes out. Love Joss Whedon's ideas and shows.

It would be so awesome (and imperative IMO) if season 2 followed on from Epitaph One, it just had soooo much epic scope that moving backward from here in storytelling is going to be a letdown. I hope Season 2 has a good excuse in continuing on from episode 12...

I'm sure season 2 will just be more episodic "imprint of the week" missions with Echo and Ballard. Which is unfortunate, this show is almost certainly going to be canceled after season 2 if they stick with the same formula and ratings don't change much. It could use a major shift like the one presented here.

Whedon and co. should just open season 2 with this episode and roll from there, use flashbacks each week to fill in how they got to this point, that way they can use the same actors, have some of the same stories, but frame the show in an entirely new and unique way.

I think season 2 could work if they bring in two ideas that seemed to be throw-away lines from epitaph one:
The idea that "actuals" automatically killing "actives" can be seen as bigotry and bring back Alpha to help them fight again the corporation.

While I liked Epitaph One - a lot - I'm quite glad they didn't show it. I know it's been spun as a contractual issue with Fox, but
how are you supposed to do a second season after that? It tells us too much about where the show can go over the next few years and makes most of the interesting questions about the show's premise completely moot. Besides, the interesting stuff isn't the post-apocalyptic scenario but the flashbacks to the present day characters.

My personal hope is that season 2 (which will undoubtedly be the final season) ends with an Epitaph Two, either continuing this story or as a polar opposite -
a whacked out happy ending for everyone where the Dollhouse tech brings nothing but goodness to the world
.

Also,
Victor's face is incredibly easily repaired! Wonder why it's a "long story" about Dr Saunders...

It was the right decision not to air this episode.

Really, what would be the point of the second season if we already had witnessed the culmination of events in 2019. There's no way to stop it since there is no time travel involved. Epitaph One basically details all the key points that occur from now until 2019 leaving little hope for the characters that we've grown attached to over the course of season one.

There's also the case of the episode ending on a semi-cliffhanger with these new characters searching for "Safe Haven" and hopefully finding Caroline's real body. Good episode but I genuinely hope that this gets filed away as non-canon in the end and Whedon decides to take a different route. Now that I know what happens, why should I be invested in the journey? Sure, the characters are great but the story is what also holds my interest and I was looking forward to being surprised as this mythology played out. If Epitaph One is canon, than there is little surprise in store for us - save those who never see this episode.

Just my two cents.

By the way, the original pilot also leaked. It's worth watching and I feel it was far more enjoyable than what they ended up airing. Rather than having a case of the week it's entirely main story stuff; it goes through stuff that is spread across the first 3-4 episodes IIRC.

Have you watched Lost?

I thought Whedon and Fox decided with the renewal that the episodic "imprint of the week" formula was going to be ditched. I swear I read that.

Joss and FOX have indicated that the show is likely to follow in the structure and quality of the stronger episodes of the first season. Epitaph One was the episode Joss presented in order to convince them the show could be done on a low budget and of the same quality.(which led to it's renewal)

Canon means, if it was written by the creator or accepted/acknowledged, then it is canon, regardless if you have seen it or not. And plus it's coming on the DVD anyways, was always meant to be an aired episode. Not like a fanfic creation or something.

I have to say after this episode I realy started to like DeWitt, sure she is a moraly questionable character that basicly enslaves humas and sells them to other poeple for "services", but she stands by her own principles (as twisted as they may seem) and wasn't wiling to let the body of a doll be sold to someone permamently

If there's captions for the pilot, PM me more information. I'd like to see the original pilot over Fox's executive meddling.

So is this "canon"? Given that not everyone would have seen this episode?

We dunno until the second season starts airing, most likely.

Well, good. I've been a Dollhouse fan since day one (yes, the early episodes are kinda bad, but since Eliza/Joss announced it back in 2007 I've been on board with the ideas/plot of the series, I'm such a sci-fi whore). So more of it is a good thing for me.

Honestly, it's like the only thing I watch from Fox now. So them canceling it means I just go back to my steady diet of USA/Burn Notice, Psych. :lol

Watching episode 13..
I honestly can't remember if this show got renewed or not.
SUCH AN AWESOME PREMISE.
I love this show so much. I had forgotten how awesome it was.

Epitath One seems more like Whedons 'fuck you' to Fox if they cancelled Dollhouse. More of a proof of a concept for what could have been if the show were to last 4 seasons or more. Imagine if in the finale of season 2 we get the first chronological flashback of Paul and Caroline in the lift!
