I have no idea what is going on nor what to do.
Same here, I didn't get far past the initial area. I basically went past the first gate, got to the big open landscape, met someone and then the game crashed. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and I loved every second of it.

Met no one my first time through. Felt so alone... It froze right when I got to the ghostly looking character who came out of the pillar.

Going to play again. This game truly is like nothing else.

Thatgamecompany (the developer) has said they have network issues, which causes the freezes. Log out of PSN if you want to be sure to make a complete run.

There are about 6-7 things that lengthen your scarf and two places with statues that show you some runes when you activate them.

In the first stage there are runes on the sides of the large pillar you use to fly over the damaged bridge, that respond when you try to activate them but don't do anything else.

Maybe you need a specific rune on your cloth to activate them. That seems to be what the statues that show you a bunch of runes are for: to show what runes to use on what levels.

Just tried it, i went in offline mode, zero glitches or freezes here

And wow, just wow
I'm speechless :O

That was amazing :)

Game needs a screenshot button, I spent half my time playing just panning the camera (easier than I expected given the sixaxis grievances) and looking at the landscape. Really is 'painting come to life' on this one

Also, dat giddy feeling when I was flying, so awesome

Music:- Wonderful, very somber (the theme we've heard) playing throughout, changes gradually with the area you explore, lots of dark/atmospheric changes for more mysterious areas. Lots of use of notes and stuff like we saw with Flower

Visuals:- Not the most technically accomplished game but the art style completely pushes it above and beyond anything you would expect to see on the market

General performance:- Runs buttery smooth for the most part, no glitches, minimal clipping. There was some framerate drops when a lot of activity came on screen but i'll assume that's because it's a beta

Controls:- controls good, I used two buttons for all of it and didn't feel like I needed any more. Nice communication with the singing. It was great gliding in the sky and then singing mid-air to attract more cloth so i could glide/fly even higher

Overall it's just awesome, need to play it to appreciate it fully
Gonna give it another go next time and find another player

Love how the bass started to boom at the end, just like how the demo starts.
Made my quiet apartment start to shake a bit.

Can we take screenshots? The visual style of this game is insane...combined with my love for desert environments and old ruins...wow.

I wish this was out right now. I desperately want to keep playing.

It's already right there with Child of Eden for me this year in the beautiful, enigmatic, intoxicating category--a severely under-served genre, for my gaming tastes.

Love the visuals of the game, too bad I did not meet anyone during my play-through. :/
Also may have preferred the right analog to control the camera and not the Sixaxis, but this game likely does not need such an agile camera system and perhaps this limited way of controlling it adds onto the mood of the game a bit. I will give this another go tomorrow.

Edit: I also liked how they used the wind to enforce the boundaries of the game when you try and get out of course. The sand effect looked like water, a more subtle way of defining the borders. :)

This is like...ICO level exploration atmosphere. Getting the same vibes from this the first time I played Ico or Shadow. I just want to look around and explore everything. Whats with that tomb though?

EDIT: Wow sand surfing :)

Man, I absolutely loved that. Any screenshot you take in that game would be wallpaper worthy. Just gorgeous! I ran into a another player and we finished the demo together. One day we shall meet again, friend! :'[

Really wish you could change the camera control onto the right stick, but I can manage if I have to.

I disappeared for a good while to really explore. This is ethereal...

I feel like we're flying. I found another meandering soul somewhere near the deconstructed bridge, and we spent a good while twirling and calling in merriment. It feels desolate, and to stumble upon another drifter is akin to an experience I haven't felt in a very long time. Two lost, too lost but we're apprehensively approaching darkness. Somber melodies and sand coasting make the desert light up, while traversing across the ruined platforms feels like we're discovering a lost civilization.

It's beautiful. The ribbons lit up, and the both of us we're soaring. lovelovelove.

And thank you to everyone at GAF, for all the beta melodrama and struggle to experience this bliss (cheers Giriath). I've mellowed completely.

Third section and i've got a full on Shinobi style scarf going. Ran into someone else mid way through the second, but I think they flew away in a cutscene?

EDIT: We seriously need a screenshot option for this game.

Wario64 said:
It's only 2 players max anyway.

Would be nice if it built up over time. By the end of the game maybe 4-5 people walking around? Still wondering about those tombs.

Anyone work out how to ride the flying kite creature things in the last section? I accidentally did it once, stood atop their head and flew to the top of a dune.

Half an hour went by and I didn't notice. Very relaxing.

Game is gorgeous. Pretty stunning. Hard to explain without caveman-ish lines like "game look good me like"...but, it's so coherent and flows perfectly, if that makes sense. The sand and character animation and subtleties. It's nice to look at.

so yeah, unless an ability is introduced later to take advantage of the right stick, just map it to the camera. motion controls worked great in Flower. here it feels like a hindrance just to look around.

I loved what we got to play. It feels like a great experience and not just playing a game. The world is just beautiful and anyone that says it's not has to be crazy. The world seemed a lot more linear then what I thought the game would be (not that it's a bad thing) and I got kinda excited when I say another player in the distance as I was messing with some cloth.

The only part that I thought was kinda dumb was that I finished the second part of the world while the other person was messing around and then he was transported to where I was. From what I got from interviews is that you could journey on your own if you chose to but that doesn't seem to be the case from what we were able to play.

The world seems very mysterious and I definitely want to explore it more.

It was simply superb. The feeling of loneliness followed by joy of having another person beside on the desert. Can't wait for the full version.

Finally played it and it's sublime.

For those who are wondering what kind of game is this, I'd say that it's a puzzle game mixed with exploration. Whoever said it reminds them of ICO is right. It's basically ICO minus the fight and with added exploration.

How do you play it? You have to pay attention to cues. The game is a silent game so you have to extrapolate meaning from imagery, situation and surrounding areas. Also, everything you touch turns to 'excitement' so to speak. Many of the puzzles in the demo requires you to interact with it.

Anyway, I'm not done yet so I'm off to play again and will post further impression later.

I had three hard locks last night, gave up after that. I'll play more today, but it is absolutely gorgeous. The sand especially.

Play it offline. I did and I had no problem whatsoever. Thatgamecompany posted on Facebook that they have problem with their server.

Finished the beta. Basically there are only 2 main sections in the beta. One requires you to
touch a bunch of big scarfs so it'll activate a bridge to a castle
. The 2nd game was mostly exploration,
You have the choice to follow a group of flying kite or explore on your own. The kite will lead you to some scarf extension for your character and the linear path that you must follow to get to the end of the section.

The game was wonderful. I did wish I can fly/jump all the time and not have to rely on
the scarf scattered around the desert
. I haven't tried online due to reports of game locking up but offline is as smooth as sands.

I think this is a good incentive for us to extend our own scarf though, once it gets really long and you fill it up you'll be able to jump and fly around a lot more and prolonged periods of time
Quite a nice 'level up' system imo

Also I expect there'll be areas where we're flying constantly (kinda like the fabric bridge which propels you upwards)

Hello there.. psn user: Macross22

I just played the Journey Beta and I loved every second of it. (Awesome.. just plain awesome scenary, music, effects, and above all that the feeling the game transmit to the player while playing it).

I'd like to say though that I'd love if you could put the option to move the camera with the second analog stick. (I understand that to people who are not used to games it's a great way to control the camera but I think that having the option to choose between the two is the way to go).

Anyway.. I'm waiting to know the date of release (I hope it's not to far away ^_^!) so I can play the full game.

P.S: I wish you the best. ^_-.

Yep.. that bolded part was the only issue that I had with the game. Well that and.. I didn't meet any other player in my game. I will have to play the beta again. XDDD

you guys sound like you're... having fun :'(

Hopefully they consider the right analog stick for camera control.
Oh yeah, six axis camera control wasn't fun. I just want a normal right stick control.

I remember in an interview during E3 that Jenova said that it was a design choice due to the stick being a lot more responsive than the SixAxis and it ended up making the camera moving faster than he wanted , I think it was on Game Informer

I really liked the camera control with the motion. Was actually pretty smooth and quick and I didn't have to take my hands of the buttons. Nice to see them progress on motion control from Flow -> Flower -> Journey.

The option should be there to choose though.

It is. After an early freeze I made it to the second stage and finally saw a player. I ran up to him and together we
unlocked the bridge
. Then it froze and I was sad. :(
Mine only froze one time(the first time I played) then I ran into someone in the second stage after I completed the bridge. That third stage was pretty great with a second player since you can each refill your jump.

When you partner up with someone online, you
recharge each others jump by singing next to each other
.

Just did my first playthrough and I have to say, this game is really really cool.

Went about my business in the first area, and then in the second I heard some chirps in the distance and met up with someone else then stuck with them the rest of the game. I was interested to see how the interactivity with a partner would play out... and all you really do need is that chirping. Works great! Me and my partner would just jump/slide/chirp for a while and it was really fun.

I would prefer having the second analog controlling the camera, as others have pointed out. But I guess I got used to the sixaxis after a bit.

No problems at all with freezing or anything.

Going to play through again in a little bit because I may have missed stuff in the first area probably. Loving it so far though!

One of the most amazing experiences ever. The second partner I met last night also knew what he was doing (long ribbon), and we ended up basically flying through the desert together, singing to each other to recharge ourselves in flight. Once you get into it, it just flows and is a thing of beauty.

quite an experience, looks amazing, it felt cool just roaming through the sand, gliding down slopes and soaring through the air. still have to play online yet, sounds even better

It is just amazing how simple chirping can get so much across to the other player. that plus the isolation makes you want to stick with your partner. It is brilliant really since this what they were aiming for all along.

As you signed an NDA when starting up the game, you agreed not to take any screenshots and especially not to post those anywhere else.

There are also plenty of gaming news sites that have the 20 screenshots released and a lot of video, so for all those who aren't in the beta, hopefully that will tide you over.

Yeah, we have had a lot of complaints/suggestions about that.
We are working very hard to make sure the game has the best (and most user friendly) camera control experience we can.

Also, a large portion of our fans are people who have never played games before or have very limited history with them. They also haven't grown up with two joysticks for the past 10 or so years, so it is very hard for them to get used to playing with them.

That's why we are trying to make sure we use the motion control instead, as well as to try to make it feel more natural.

Hopefully there's at least an option to use the other stick for the camera. I don't know about natural, using the Sixaxis has just always felt really awkward to me.

But will you at least include an option under settings to use the dual analog sticks?

I think Teknoman is talking about an actual screenshot feature.

the problem I feel is that motion controls for camera controls is even more unnatural and cumbersome then the right analog stick. I was finding myself being lost in the world but I kept being drawn out by the simple fact I was getting frustrated with the camera controls.

I like the sixaxis camera control. Just like in Flower, I think it makes it feel less like a video game.

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure he wasn't talking about releasing screenshots of the beta.

And I'll make sure to try my hardest to get this put into the game! (I personally would absolutely love to have this feature, as it was great to see all the random shots in flOw!)

If you're going to force me to use the sixaxis control (we like options), I may wait on a purchase. Many of us have different playing positions, and motion control camera locks us into one position. Options don't hurt anything.

Just like our other PSN games, Journey will most likely not have a "settings" page, as we want to make it as seamless as we can.

And don't worry, we are working very hard on using the right stick. (We're thinking about not directly stating it's there, but letting people use it if they want. That is, as long as we get it working well.)

Yes please. I've had a hard time with the sixaxis, and it's not quite as responsive as the right stick would be, making it very awkward to control the camera.

Game is beautiful otherwise.

I know exactly what you mean! (I play a lot of games laying on my side, and when they use motion control in the camera, it sometimes makes me decide not to play the game just because I don't want to detract from my relaxing.)

And we had an extremely even more limited private test that started last week, and this was something that people complained/suggested more than anything else. Right after that we started to put a lot more work into using the right analog stick.

And as for "Options" not hurting anything, it actually detracts from the experience, because instead of just starting up the game, you are lead to a separate area that you have to go to first, and then you go to the game, instead of just, "Game"

(Think about when in GTA4, you are brought directly to the game, when in Uncharted you have a menu to go through first. And Braid would actually lose a lot of it's magic if you started not as Tim, but as your cursor clicking, "Start Game" out of a menu.)
