Journey (PS3) Public Beta discussion thread

The demo was incredible! No bugs to report here. It was just a ton of fun to let your curiosity take you places. I was really anxious to see how they were going to approach invisible walls/geometry that boxes you in, and was pleasantly surprised when I found myself being pushed against the air current. It feels very natural and doesn't take you out of the experience. Can't wait to jump back in!

Awesome, you actually give others power when you're near them. Found some more hidden scarves and another tomb in the 2nd area. Always check the sandfalls. Its also funny how others personality/playstyle comes through their character. The person I was with was floating/flying everywhere while I was sandsurfing under them.

Kinda felt like playing through an animated short.

fair enough.

Maybe, safe to say, it made me feel content.

The game really is relaxing. On a side note, if you have played ICO yet, do so (or make sure to pick up the HD collection).

Right stick support!? Woooo!

I'm really into challenging control schemes and changing the way we play games. And I rarely talk negatively when developers implement new ideas or try something else. I was a fan of Warhawks six axis, Uncharted 1's grenade mechanic, flowers control scheme ect. But not even I can defend how completely dumb attaching the camera to the six axis movement was.

If they really wanted some six axis support they could just connect it to the scarf, so you can move it around... done!

Gave my sister the controller, and she found somebody online! Finished the entire demo with them, and loved every minute of it. The feeling of discovery is absolutely wonderful.

Given that this gen is filled with shooters I don't think that's a problem.

Every time I've played Journey I kept trying to use the right stick. I personally think it's more natural for "hardcore" gamers than the Sixaxis controls, but that's why we're seeing what people think about the controls.

I highly doubt that we would remove the Sixaxis controls and keep the right analog controls, as we are making sure that our games are accessible to people who have never touched a video game controller before.

Well sure Move support in Flower would be more impactful as motion controls is what the whole controls are based upon, but while I do agree they wouldn't add much to the experience in Journey, I do believe Move is better suited for this sort of camera controls, to the point that no Move owner would ask for a right stick alternative. Which on the other hand is the case with DS3 users.

Add to that the ease of implementation (can't stress this enough - I wouldn't discuss this matters if Move implementation would have required serious effort) and I just don't see why it's not there already in the first place.

It seems to me TGC wants people to enjoy motion camera controls so why not offer the best solution for that? Heck, you might even sell a few extra copies to some of those 9m Move owners out there looking for compelling content. Of course they all own a DS3 as well, but that's no guarantee they'd buy your game. Move support is no guarantee either, but it's an extra "lure" worth taking advantage of IMO. Cover all the bases etc.

Good thanks! Trying to get Journey to support Move so I can talk about it on iWaggle3D :D

As a Move owner myself, I'm always looking for a new game to try out motion controls on, but they are few and far between, but at least it's looking better than the EyeToy and PS Eye support. There were barely any games that used those as controllers. (Some games just took pictures of you and used them in the game, but at least that was something.)

As for myself, I just can't think of how implementing motion controls would make the game better. It's somewhat of a platforming, puzzle game, thing, so I can't really see the Move improving that. I personally don't want the usage of motion/touch/whatever to detract from the quality of games. I used to be very excited for the DS, but I didn't think there were many titles that actually made good use of the touch screen. And don't get me started on that Spiderman game on the DS that you needed three hands to play!

(And I was very disappointed when I found out that Flower wasn't going to include Move support. I still think that would have been perfect!)

Just remember, thatgamecompany is always going for the best experience that will fit for as many people as we can.

*Also remember that whenever I rant about other games or write, "I," that means that it's me saying this, and not thatgamecompany, no matter how much nerd raeg is spread throughout the internetz.

Is anyone hoping that later in the game the levels will be much bigger ?

I want to spend ages travelling and exploring but im not sure how big the game worlds they have planned.

Don't think there's an official date. Last I heard, it was suppose to be out this year. But we all know how that usually goes...

Jenova said at E3 that they were hoping to get it out this year.

Yeah, I hope the world is bigger than what I think it'd be. At least I hope to see some secret nooks and crannies (containing extra items etc) if I were to travel far from the usual path. Maybe asking too much from a downloadable game though.

The most amazing effects when you stand just before the edge of the level area's 'zone', and the strong winds push you back, all the sand reacts to these powerful gusts and just looks stunning!!

Honestly I think this game gives Team Ico a fair run for it's money!

Played it and then had my bro-in-law play it (didn't tell him where to go). I love the sense of momentum you get when you climb up the mountain then slide/surf down.

Didn't really catch any bugs, visuals look great and critical path looked fairly obvious and discovery of narrative elements had us exploring more on the 2nd and 3rd playthrough.

Can't wait for the release.

Just 'finished' the Beta for the first time.

That was sublime. Closest thing I have seen to perfect visuals this gen (flower was a grand highmark as well). So many Hit games, UE3 action games and whatnot... I can instantly point out several flaws after a minute of playing ("low res gore sprites", "animation looks wonky", "no animation in this stance" etc). Journey looks like a piece of hand-tailored craft on every pixel. It is stunning and it makes other games look lazy.

I also enjoyed the bond with a coop partner I met, it reminds me of Demon's Souls in that it's silent mutual agreements, aid and fun coop exploration. And not having to stress with voice/text chat but letting your gaming actions do the speaking. Racing the dunes together (if ya know what I mean...) was very playful.

I am impressed.

This game is definitely one of the prettiest games of all time and it's got the perfect philosophy as far as storytelling is concerned. But as a game, it's sort of a bunch of nothing so far. Walking around and barking at structures is what it seems like in the first three areas and the pyramid is already pretty close on the horizon.

I am sort of compelled to see it through but i am apprehensive it will be nothing the whole game. It's also far more linear than I expected.

I was following Playstation on twitter last night and they said they were giving away beta codes and to stay tuned. Next thing I know is they tweeted all winners have been contacted. I didn't even see a tweet about the details they talked about. Am I missing something here?

you needed to tell them about your favourite ps3 coop experience

so do youi agree that all those pickets are actually
graves or something
If you find the hidden temple on the first part of the game it shows you what the pickets are.

Yeah, they gave out 400 codes randomly to people who tweeted before 5:15 PM PDT using some hash tag they posted. Looks like they deleted the tweet with the details after the contest ended.

Ah, I missed that tweet then. Thanks!

I don't want to ever leave.

Does the square button have a use later in the game? If not, they really need to map the chirp to it. It's the natural resting positing of the thumb. The new analog camera control works great. Much better than the sixaxis.

This is what I felt watching footage of the beta. I will still buy it. I will play it to the end. I want to support and experience different types of game, and good art goes a long way with me.

But damn does it look boring to play...

The end of the beta gives me hope that there's more 'gamey' stuff to it. I atleast hope so, the game has a lot of potential and I don't think it can really hold that much attention if it's basically the beta extended over a few hours.

it's a totally different game when you're co-oping with someone.

can it be?? Someone in the distance?? :O :D

*rushes over there*

Just another scroll swaying in the wind... :( foreveralone.jpg

I can see this game entering my top5 or 10 ever... just soooooo good. :,)

Hopefully they don't shove unnecesary stuff in there at the last minute just to please the people who are not getting it and find it boring. It's perfect as it is for me.

God damn I need this game now!

I loved it, didn't find anyone but I think I rather play this game alone and wait for that magical moment where I see someone in the distance and we both stop and stare at each other while our scarfs wave through the wind

The mechanics in play aren't bad. It feels great to fly, surf on sand and generally walk about. But what you do with the mechanics is so basic it just puts everyone on sleep mode. There's nothing to really do except bark at things the whole time.

I love the art, love the philosophy toward storytelling - very interpretive, no words - but the gameplay is so empty it's hard to imagine it being fun beyond an hour

it was AMAZING! when i saw someone walking around i felt the need to be with them. We both just took the journey together. I hope this game isnt short in the finished version i would buy DLC or a retail version Day 1. I don't even really buy DLC but i would for this

That last area is so gorgeous with its use of color. The flowing pink sands against the sea green sky, clouds flanking the horizon, is just gorgeous. It literally took my breath away - I actually gasped irl.

If the game didn't seem so darn boring gameplay wise it'd be the total package. Its got the rest covered - great understated audio presence, astounding visuals, fantastic storytelling philosophy. So I hope there is a lot the BETA didn't show as regards to its gameplay otherwise it'll be as boring as Flower was for me.

Also I finally met someone on my "journey" but he/she just sort of sauntered about and ran away.

At first I wasn't sure about the game, but after I played it more and more I'm hooked and can't wait for the final product.

It really has a great peaceful feeling to it, just like flOw and Flower did. Love it.
