Journey (PSN) E3 Trailer + Jenova Chen interview

I'm not usually into games like this, but this looks incredible. I'm going to be 100% supporting them and I'm really looking forward to this game. I love that you aren't forced into co-op and can just do your own thing as well.

I really wish MORE developers actually had grand philosophies that ran through the game. It informs the entire creative process, and the game itself becomes an extension of the creator's viewpoint.

I certainly enjoy that more than "IN THIS GAME YOU GET AWESOME GUNS AND SWORDS AND SHOOT/SLICE THINGS".
When it works? absolutely, which I should have added. When a developer expresses those views in all the right places and ways, then proceeds to let the games speak for themselves, I can't help but applaud them.

What irks me the most, however, is when the exact opposite happens, then suddenly all those elements become the most addling and ponderous aspects of the game, and usually leaving the game with nothing to fall back on.

So very, very purrdy~

They didn't show it last year did they? It was in some combo video that was on the press page but I don't think it got time at the conference.

About fifteen minutes into my hands-on with thatgamecompany's Journey, I realized that the odd sense of déjà vu I was getting was a feeling I hadn't experienced since I was about seven years old. The Super Nintendo was the very first console I owned, and it opened up whole new worlds I never could have imagined. Games like Super Mario World felt like grand adventures that blew my young mind and left me in such a sense of awe.

I think the same goes for everyone when they first experience a videogame at a young age. Now that I'm older, games rarely, if ever, leave me with similar feelings. That's not to say I don't get immersed or don't have fun with games -- far from it. It's that growing up surrounded by games (and even having multiple jobs to do with gaming) has gotten me used to the basic formula everyone uses. There's a standard for every game, whether it's obvious or not.

Journey, however, made me feel like I was exploring something completely fresh again. You're put into such a big, beautiful world with no direction or understanding of what's going on, yet you're compelled to press forward.

FUCK YEAHHHH

For whatever reason they showed it AFTER the conference, with a small viewing

This baby better get some serious E3 spotlight this year. Do it Sony.

Sony has some PSN games at their booth, but I get the feeling this one might be an appointment one. It deserves it.

Not gonna watch the video or check out any screenshots, I was sold on this at first unveiling. Seems like things are continuing to look good, even accounting for GAF hyperbole.

Between this and the El Shaddai date it's a good time to be an aesthete mayne.

Edit: Oh yeah and Grand Knights History too. So much goodness.

They should open with Chen playing it live. It looks like it'd be an easy waggle game, get him up there waggling, everyone wins. It's too pretty not to include.

I'll be honest, even though I absolutely loved the video footage.....I wish I didn't see it :(

I might have to be on a media blackout soon with this game.

Beautiful. I need to maybe purchase 2 copies. I'm tired of ugly, post apocalyptic worlds. That sense of beauty and wonder is what I want to feel from games again.

Just watched it. I'm not joking when I say that I think this is the best looking game I've ever seen. Tears of joy that such a game exists.

Just absolutely stunning. Mother of all creation it's as good and elegant as I had hoped it would be. So damn good.

Can Solidsnake or someone gif that part that looks like a firework or meteor in the sky?

As I was scanning the first page of GAF, I can see this thread....but I think this thread title should be edited to something...like say....

ITS BEAUTIFUL! Trust us, get in here and watch!

Such a jaw dropping art style. And I love the concept of just being dropped somewhere left to explore and discover on your own.

I'm still slightly worried about that "use the Sixaxis to control the camera" tibit from early. I hope that's an optional setup. But everything else is just genius.

the .gifs... wow...

I seem to recall some members of thatgamecompany lurking at GAF in the past, so if any of you are reading this:

You guys are magicians. *bow*

Considering their 2 games are showpieces for SIXAXIS, I wouldn't worry.

I hope people paid attention to what the guy said as well as how beautiful the game is. What he talks about is why this game + flower is so special and why we need more games like them.

Absolutely gorgeous and grin inducing. Flower was a real eye opener for me in terms of what a video game could be like and it looks like Journey will be also. The folks at That Game Company seem to have an amazing design philosophy and I'm loving the vibe I'm getting from this footage. I want this game!

Fantastic art direction.

Liked Cloud, liked Flow PC, liked Flow PSN, loved Flower - I'm sure you see the pattern by now. :p

Games like this make me glad I own a PS3. It's really what sets them apart from the competition.

This is the reason I prefer the PS3 as well.
This and Team Ico's games stand above all others in my opinion in trying to push the medium into something more than just entertainment. :)
I don't care what anyone else says, but if a movie can be considered art, there's no reason why games cannot be.

Exactly. The whole philosophy behind their games are what makes them truly special to me. They are not afraid to develop something completely different and out of the norm in the video game market. They develop what they want and what they believe in and I'm grateful for that.

You gif-making wizards, thanks and them coming. :)

I just remembered you can't specify a player to enter your world right? That would be kind of a bummer actually, I would love love love playing this with my friend, wo chatting to each other is fine.

Sony conference should start with this game. Just show it playing. That's all you need.

*Kaz Hirai walks on stage*

*Kaz bows as the theater goes dark*

*JOURNEY trailer plays*

*after the trailer, Kaz stops bowing and says "Please see our kiosks for more games"*

*Kaz quietly exits the stage and Sony's show ends*

While I don't consider games art, I certainly think Team Ico are the best developers currently working, and Flower was wonderful, my hype for TLG and Journey are pretty fever-pitch in levels at this point.

As much as I love my balls to the wall shooters, it's games like Journey and The Last Guardian that keep me interested in this medium.
