Journey (PSN) E3 Trailer + Jenova Chen interview

Spot on post there, piratepwnsninja.

So, has there been any word on how the jump between the different environments will be handled? In a game this immersive, it would be cool if you could go from desert to blizzard just by walking there, but I think that would be a bit too much to seamlessly blend together. Maybe it could go desert, ocean, then artic or something...

I see where you are coming from. For me, I think ThatGameCompany's games take more of a leap between the user and the game/message. I think (and I dislike using this term) it doesn't nanny the gamer, but instead relies more on the gamers intelligence/interpretation than Ico/Shadow of the Colossus ever did.

I would agree that the gameplay in Flower is shallow, but I think it is more up to the user to find the connection between the gameplay and the theme than Team Ico's games. I like to think ThatGameCompany aren't holding our hands or gesturing to meaning, instead, they put hints in towards it. Listening to Kellee Santiago or Jenova Chen, away from the experience of the game (and preferably after it) would strengthen peoples opinions on the games. For me, I look at each game individually and draw my own conclusions.

That's where we disagree. I think games like Flower are practically hitting the user over the head with the imagery, and its partly because the gameplay is so poor that in order to get the meaning across the imagery has to be really hamfisted about everything.

Personally I love games that don't "nanny" the player. I love games that start like Zelda I did, where you're just plopped into the world and set to explore. That part of what they're saying is good. I guess I have my reservations as to whether they can pull it off without beating the user over the head with obvious symbolism.

Gametrailer in op paused before the first minute is over. Came back here to say: I would gladly, gladly, pre-order a psn title. This PSN Title.

Just take my money Chen. Take it and do with it what you will.

edit: having said that... hopefully they don't do a Nintendo and overprice it, after gaging public interest and realising how popular this game is gonna be. That would just bring undue negative press.

Well Flower wasn't too expensive - around £10?

Oh anything around there is fine. I'm thinking something ridiculous like £20 or £25. But I'm pretty sure Sony are not that stupid....

It's taking longer to make and it looks more costly than Flower, but Sony aren't going to charge a ton for it, I'd say $20/£15 max.

Just when interest begins waning for this game as it's taking such a long time to come, I see something like this which sends the hype off the charts once again.
Great interview, I'd love a disc release of Flow, Flower and Journey all with concept art and interviews similar to though more in-depth than this one.
Do it Sony!

Game is not defined by stress level. There is a goal, and there is interactivity.
Exactly this. From what I've seen so far Journey seems more like an interactive toy (or an interactive sandbox, literally).

But I think it somewhat depends on your taste. For example I can never listen to slow/soft music that doesn't get me pumped, same thing with "relaxation" games.

They can call it thatgamecollection.

Instantly my most wanted game.
Though, it's not like, we can meet a random player in the desert? We connect like in other games right?

No, I believe the player encounters are exactly like meeting a random player in the desert.

Just got around to watching this. I've been looking forward to this ever since I wrapped up flower... but I'm completely blown away by what I just saw. Beautiful and mesmerising environments, combined with stripped back but refined gameplay pretty much makes for my ideal game. I've never been a competitive player, but I love an immersive world. This looks perfect. Please take all my money now TGC.

Absolutely beautiful. This game knows that less is more. The exhiliration of discovery and mystery is something not a lot of games seem to be interested in, yet when done right elevates a game to untold heights.

If they figure out how to make just wandering around fun, this could be amazing. It certainly looks amazing.
I'm sure there will be things to do but what I like about creators like Chen are that he makes games with a purpose or to sort of evoke the player in ways that most games don't. If the game seems more boring because of that then so be it. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Game looks fantastic. One of my most anticipated games. I loved Flower and this looks even better. Really like the idea of exploration in this online world. Can't wait.

I feel bad for the handful of poor confused souls in this thread who seem to have broken aesthetic evaluation modules. It must be very confusing, not knowing what good art looks like.

"Hopefully this year???" ok come on, hire another guy or two! Dat Game Company is taking too long with these. Another year of wait for this is crazy. I frankly wish they would just keep their stuff under wraps until they are within a year of shipping, at least.

That was the plan, it was a two year cycle aimed for a summer release.

I WILL be disappointed in this game if it has the same depth as Flower. Such epic imagery demands something more. I don't know what that something is but I hope it's there.

I feel like Chen would benefit greatly from some sort of creative partner to help him focus and direct his ideas. He is great at coming up with beautiful concepts and visuals but it seems like he lacks the ability to carry and develop them all the way to a rich, fully-developed experience.

Flower and Flow are really cool but they do have this subtle "student project" feeling to them (Flower less so) in that they lack the confidence to build on their core concepts. That's where I think a partner could come in handy. Sometimes artists need help to push their ideas to the next level and out of the idea phase.

I really hope they manage to get this game out this year. Ever since it was announced, I've been dying to play it.
