to play devil's advocate, if shortages of blu-ray laser diodes being manufactured counts as major news, shouldn't an abundance of broadway/hollywood chips for the Wii count as major news also? They both contribute to availability of launch consoles, right?

I think it is harsh to fire a guy because of hyping crap news, but keep in mind that you only know one side of the coin here - maybe that was the straw that broke the camel's back.
