Joystiq: Halo being remade by Saber Interactive, release November 15 (rumour)

Indeed.

What's interesting is how many games we'll have had before the main Halo story moves forward. The core trilogy was a unified story. Since then we had a side story set during Halo 2, a prequel that takes place before the first game, and a (rumored) remake of the first game. So a three game trilogy, and then three games spinning in different directions but without moving the story forward.

I'm curious how 343 will kick off their take on the series; a whole lotta baggage comes with resuming the Chief's story, not the least of which is the Legendary ending, which relatively few people saw but is kinda important.

I really wish that 343 was not doing Halo 4, but just doing Halo. Something new removed form the current story arch and world. But seeing where they will go is going to be extremely interesting, especially with the Legendary ending in mind, and what they are gonna do with it, since the general consensus was that it would connect to Marathon.

E3 2012

The camera slowly pans across a sea of stars.

The remains of the Forward Unto Dawn can be seen floating in eerie silence.

Cortana: "Chief? Chief? Wake up, you're needed!"

Cue panning shot of Dark Planetoid, dwarfing the Dawn, in the background.

Cut back to inside the Dawn as the Cryotube's lid opens up, misty haze filling the scene. The mist clears and Master Chief's iconic reflective visor comes into centre focus.

Master Chief: "Let's do this."

Logo.

No way in hell they're gonna save Halo 4 for 2013. It's going to be the big fall release next year.

Might be way too late for this. The competitive community in particular wanted this game remade solely for online mp 7+ years ago when the God-awful sequel released. Seems most of those people moved on. I'm one of them.

I can honestly take or leave this, which is something I couldn't imagine myself saying justa year ago.

Hmmm.. A Halo 4 could be interesting. MC is in the perfect position to have the same sense of isolation/lone soldier feel of the first one.

So much drama in this thread.

The guys are good technically and the game is already done, what could go wrong ?

Just add good online play and make it cheap. There is no need to really change anything else.

Shaddap.

*edit*

Honestly, if they touch a single thing mechanics wise, I'm out for sure.

Could be the same approach Microsoft and 4J Studios took with Perfect Dark on XBLA, it wasn't just a higher resolution update either - they built new models (based on the original art), new textures, running at 60fps, with more control options and online components, while still being unmistakably Perfect Dark. I think that would be a great way to do it.

Edit: hey, great timing equil ;)

I don't think it should be called Halo 4. Heck, I don't even think it should have Halo in the title; but obviously the name sells, so it will. Halo 3 should have ended the Halo trilogy, whatever is next should continue Master Chiefs story on that forerunner planet. A chance to start afresh; no covenant, no flood, and no halos.

I vote for barriers in ranked play, but no barriers in unranked. As fun as they are, it's unfair that I can escape from Blood Gulch in like five different ways.

I really hope that they still make the Library frustrating as all fuck.

Not a joke post, I am serious.
Me too! Pushing through the Library on Legendary awakened some well hidden masochistic side of me, and set me in a state of gaming zen. It was amazing.

They could try and pull a Modern Warfare, and slowly move away from the Halo numerical structure, and make the subtitle the main branding point for the 343 branch of games.

actually its probably a good idea, reach is bland, ugly, and sterile
What version of Reach did you play? Because I honestly thought it was beautiful, at times, but certainly never bland or ugly. Sterile I guess is a judgment call but I'm not even sure what it means in this context.

Combat Evolved, the new game from 343.

Wonder if they will change the Legendary ending to hint at the new Halo just a bit. I mean they COULD just make the remake seem like MC remembering the first Halo game and in the Legendary ending he wakes up.

Indeed. Halo: Forerunner, for example. And then when the stories continues, drop the Halo and just call it Forerunner 2.

why would Microsoft give anything Halo to a third party developer?

I can see the remake happening but I would think it'd be by 343

Does this mean EA is gonna be courting Frankie to join them? Snatched Studios, headed up by ex-343 guys!

1- Time.
2- Money.

343 are taking DECADES to do anything and everytime they get mentioned they described as "seeing over the franchise" so it's more than possible.

the dev team behind timeshit? :/

gonna go ahead and say that i hope this isn't true.

Time Shift was decent at best but think about it: if this is true the devs have zero creative work to do. They're basically updating textures and possibly audio so there's not too much to worry about. Then too they're really only doing that for half a game and then it's all back tracking anyway.

You can't rush perfect, just gotta let the magic happen.

It's hard not to see this as MS realizing they don't have a Halo game for next fall.
Their "no comment at this time" and Frankies silence has confirmed it even more. Hell I wouldnt even consider this a rumor anymore.

343's game is next year, which was why Gears 3 got moved to the fall, because the next Halo wasn't ready for prime time.

I think it's going to the launch title for the new xbox.

Halo 4 on the Xbox Cloud :) tm

Like ODST and Reach, for example.

Though I wonder if they need to enumerate the "main" games as a way to distinguish them from side stories. Everyone would know that Halo 4 would be the return of the Chief from the name alone. That might be harder to convey with a subtitle (unless you call it Halo: Return of the Chief as He Battles the Dark Planetoid Rising).

"Halo: Master Chief in the events of Marathon, if you've never heard of it get off my lawn"..."Legendary Edition"

That would put the next Xbox for next year, which seems way to early.

Very good point, but I trust MS's incredible marketing machine to convey the message well enough. It's almost the thing I look forward to more then the game itself, seeing what MS will do in terms of marketing, since they always bring out their guns for it.

what was that one map called? powerhouse? that environment was really ugly. the sword base one was bland. the forge world/tempest areas look ok but there's something about them that just looks fake and produced. art is of course subjective but theres just something about the style and color choices in reach that just makes me feel uncomfortable and bored really fast. and i can't really say i saw anything in that game i would call beautiful like parts of halo1 or even guardian in halo3

Yeah that's my guess, too, with a reveal this E3.

And regarding this rumor: It makes sense to have some other developer handle the 'port' since 343i is churning away at the next BIG Halo title. It's relatively easy for them to oversee the project.

Day fucking one if true. Sounds sooo good. <3
