Jrpg with love stories?

the love stories are like.. made for teenagers, there's no depth in them, it usually involve childhood frens and stuff, very unoriginal. That said, i enjoyed xenogear's love story, it was epic.

almost all tales games have a love side story, they are not good but can be funny at times.

btw, there was sex in Xenosaga, it was in ep3, it was shion and someone else, don't want to spoil it but it's true.

In Grandia's epilogue
Justin and Feena have a whole bunch of kids, even.

I'd also dare to mention the bizarre menage-a-trois ending Grandia II had.

Ah, Grandia II.
That and FFVIII definitely are the best, out of what I have played.

Final Fantasy VIII still comes to mind as the best love story in the genre.

In defense of this, I will quote two different commenters from youtube(of all places, saw these earlier thread reminded me)

nostalgic feel to this one, reminds when i was 15 (back in 99') when this game came out . I love the whole part where you go to the galbadia hotel, foolishly watch Julia play her piano tune and talk to her in the hotel room. Dont care if you RPG fanatics think the whole love theme in FF8 is "cheesy" or "sappy" or whatever, theres something genuine and dearing about those scenes that really hit home.

what makes the love stories in 8 interesting is that squall and Laguna are so shy and introverted and their objects of affection equally opposite. its strange to see soldiers characters like this, but that uniqueness makes the story. this scene is also very funny because of the jokes and encouragement laguna's friends toss at him.

Good points here.

Tales of the Abyss kind of.

I'm not trying to say the story of the game is good, its characters are pretty awesome though. I find Luke and Tears relationship to be developed pretty well.

That's what i wanted to hear, i started playing the game yesterday : )

No where in the game is Rinoa still infatuated with Seifer. They were done, kaput.

That's not entirely true, she's at the dance at his invitation. I'm pretty sure that he introduces her to Robin Williams. Later on its obvious that she still harbours feelings for him, which are then confused by his apparent death. Some of the best things about FFVIII's story are the things left unsaid explicitly, I think. Otherwise, yeah, I agree. Yey for FFVIII.

Agreed, it was a nice gradual progression for them. First developing a friendship then repairing it mid-way through, then finally developing romantically.

I'll admit I'm a sucker for these so I usually can enjoy them for what they are even if they're obviously poorly thought out but I definitely enjoyed TotA through and through. FFX probably had the best romance story of any JRPG/videogame period, barring the stupid laughing scene.

How about the Dragon Quest series?

Dragon Warrior I - Princess: "Dost thou love me?" "No." "But thou must! Dost thou love me?" "No." "But thou must! Dost thou love me?" "...."

DQII-III doesn't have any love story.

DQIV and DQVI seem to hint about a relationship between the male lead and another girl (Cynthian for DQ4, Barbara for DQ6). I believe further explorations are made in their novels/manga.

DQVII features several mini-stories about love, some of which are really touching, but they do not fall upon the main characters.

DQVIII is like the first game.

But then there's DQV, in which the main character has to choose a girl to marry and have children and stuff. Not exactly a deep love story, but a really good exploration of one, if that.

Lunar and Lunar 2 have the best love stories, in my opinion. No obvious signs of them being topped anytime soon, either. Which is sad because they're not really all *that* good.

FFX Beats the crap out of Rinoa's "I think I'm in love with Seifer NO WAIT I LOVE YOU SQUALL! LOL".

I was so disappointed with VIII. :(

THIS. When I first played the game I thought "Wow, is she fickle or what? She falls in and out of love so quickly.".

people better not be hating on FFVIII -- I liked it a lot. More so than FFVII, but I'm probably in the minority. I couldn't jump on that train that most people do with FFVII.

Of all the FF games, FFTactics has to be my favorite with the storyline. Trying to recall if there's a major love story in it, but I can't think of any that stick out.

FF10 basically took many of the FF8 characters and remade them (at least imo).

Rinoa > Yuna
Zell > Wakka
Selphie > Rikku

The best thing to come out of FF10 had to be Auron.

Persona 3, I guess? It's totally optional, but there's like 5 different girls you can hook up with and the main ones have somewhat of a good love story.

FFVIII for sure
Lunar 1-2
Tales of Destiny 2
Grandia II (Millenia <3)

Those are all I can come up with off the top of my head where a love story takes the main stage. There are plenty of sub-plots in other games though.

I don't understand the general hate towards FF8. I found it to be a enjoyable experience and by far not the worst FF experience.
Not everybody's played FF2. :D

Xenosaga Ep1-3. The Shion/KosMos love story was very touching at points - although I did feel sorry for Allen's largely ignored attempts at romance.
Shion: Oh, Kos-Mos. I wish you never jhad to fight. That's why I created you to be able to kill as much as possible, so you'd never ever have to fight.

Shion came off to me as a bad ripoff of Noonian Soong.

Yeah, most of the ones that immediately came to mind for me have already been hit on (Xenogears, Persona 3, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, and Thousand Arms, Odin Sphere).

Although implemented with a bludgeon dose of anime memes, I would say Ar Tonelico was a decent love story.

Also, Final Fantasy IX.

FFVIII for sure. As long as you didn't make Squall respond like a jerk all the time, the development was believable.

I remember this one part where Dr. Kadowaki asks Squall if Rinoa is his girlfriend.

I replied something like, "Yes, she is."

Then Rinoa asks, "Squall, are you serious?"

Your choices are then:

- Of course not.
- I am serious.

So I choose: "I am serious."
Rinoa: "Oh Squall! I am so happy!"
Squall: "I am serious-ly joking."

Lunar 2 is the only one that truly sticks out as having the central love story particularly well-done. For Lunar 1, I actually like the other two couples more than the main one.

Shadow Hearts 1 (and the related part of Shadow Hearts 2) is one of the better ones.

FF8? Eh, I don't really like how the couplings are handled in that.

Honestly I found the love story in the first half of Star Ocean 2 to be more believeable and interesting than that of most JRPGs.

Lunar 1 & 2 imo. I liked the 'love' story in Grandia 2 since the main had 2 girls he was into (though it wasn't quite clear who he picked at the end).

I played and beat Xenosaga Ep 1 and i don't remember any love story between them at all. :\

My memory must be shot.

Huh? Seems like no one posted Persona 3/4... It's got a pretty big focus on the romance since like half the game is a dating sim. It's also a little bit easier to take than various FF's, maybe because it's contemporary.

edit: Oops, I cannot read.

I love Tales of the Abyss and thinks it is one of the best games to come out last generation.

But the Love Story between Luke and Tear definitely does not stand up to the best in the genre. Game Arts did a far better job in developing romantic relationships in Lunar, Lunar 2, and Grandia. Heck when
Justin and Feena were alone journeying to Alent, the closeness you felt between them created a special atmosphere that no game could even touch
, maybe that is a testament to the amazing character development in Grandia, but I felt that is has more to do with the great character dynamic between the two.

Lunar 1 and 2 and Grandia are probably the only ones that didn't have me totally cringing or laughing out loud on a somewhat consistent basis. Or both.

Everywhere. And thats the problem: quantity over quality.

I've never seen a single kiss on a japanese RPG.

Oh yeah, there was this kiss on Sonic the Hedgehog 2006...

The episode 1 picture in this thread has Shion practically groping Kos-Mos. If the first season of Lost had a poster showing off a huge twist, I'd expect that twist to be shown in season one!

I'm not even sure what you're trying to imply at this point... Xenosaga's Shion/Kos-Mos relationship was probably the most unique portrayal of 'love' you'll ever see in a game. Without spoiling for you (lulz), that poster symbolizes a lot more than just hot female on fem-bot action.
