• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

JRPGs you have finished

How are you managing with Vesperia Ps3? Is it difficult?
Are you using the 360 transcript to go through the story mode?

I didn't really care about the plot translating as I know it all already and I also know the general story behind Patty. I did use the Aselia wiki to help with Artes, Skills, and Titles as it has both English and Japanese for those. I used another wiki for items. I don't know any Japanese.

When playing through the game's story, I only used a sidequest guide.

I also, thanks to many playthroughs (more than my list says lol) knew what enemies I remember having to kill alot for items, where the good search points were. So when it came time to do all the synthesis, I pretty much had everything already. I did have to look u a few things though.

I'm working on platinuming it at the moment. Generally speaking, it's not difficult. I wouldn't usually play a Tales game in Japanese though, it's just the I enjoyed Vesperia so much.

How did I forget DIGIMON WORLD 2 in my list, that game is AWESOME. Also this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F8jvPBo02I

Hey man, I'm still keeping a few aspects of my deck of cards secret. :P

Are you going Yu-Gi-Oh! on me? lol.

Vesperia PS3 is a breeze if you played the 360 version. No need for a translation at all.

What? Presence of stats equals RPG. Metroivanias are thoroughly RPGs but the Metroid games aren't. But I digress.

I guess that Iga-vanias could be considered JRPGs afterall, it's just that they don't feel that way to me.
I'd need to think my RPG definition a little more thoroughly.

I see. Actually having already played it in English helps a lot!
I think I'll play it next year, even if I haven't played the 360 version.
I do understand some Japanese though.

Xenosaga is on US PSN? (I haven't honestly looked) Maybe I should look into it sometime... wish they could release the US versions on the UK store but eh. Licenses stuff or whatever... :(

No it isn't. I mean I imported the series during the PS2 days. As for US PSN, there are a lot of non UK PS1/PSP RPG's available on the US store

I love the game and I know there are a ton of people on GAF who hate the game but I consider it to be one of the shining RPG experiences on the 360. Plus it has the best Sakuraba OST of all time.

Loved the presentation. Music was fantastic (Valkyrie Profile is better from Sakuraba though!), and some of the art backdrops were really good looking. And I never stopped getting a laugh out of every character's musical name. Don't have any qualms about the battle system that a lot of people do, just feel the game faded in the last third.

Aeana's list is far bigger than mine.

And I think she's played a lot of KRPGs, CRPGs, WRPGs, etc. Sooooo...

I liked Eternal Sonata presentation and battle-wise (on NG+). I think the soundtrack is wonderful.

I did enjoy Encore mode by having Level 6 from the start. And what's a KRPG?

Ah right, sorry got confused.

I've only used my US PSN account for some DLC (Tales of Graces f) and Resident Evil 2/3 since I got impatient waiting for it to come out on the UK PSN

edit: As for the Digimon games since they are being mentioned. I never played DW2 at the time and later on (like the last 5 years) when I decided to look it up on youtube, I didn't like the look of it much.

Digimon World 1 is awesome and DW2003 is great as well though I never completed the latter since it dragged on later in the game and I lost interest and forgot about it. Still fun though

Most people is including SRPGs and ARPGs, so I'll do it too.

I already have it pre-ordered and paid for. Can't wait :D everything I've seen about it looks fantastic.
Ugh, I should've gotten that instead of ordering Zero Evolution, Time Travelers, and Conception the other day. >_<

I'll see what I can do about it by the end of the week. I really want it. (Tamers should be next because CORONA DESTROYER)

In all seriousness though, I wish this thread would turn into a more interesting/thoughtful discussion about RPGs rather than listing out all games we've played.

Some incredibly long lists there.

I don't think mine is anything special but I'd like to know myself.. so here goes:

Blue Dragon
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy I (PS1)
Final Fantasy II (PS1)
Final Fantasy IV (PS1)
Final Fantasy V (PS1)
Final Fantasy VI (PS1)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
Xenoblade Chronicles

That's 28 games.
There are a few which I played but didn't finish (like Breath of Fire II or Star Ocean: Till the End of Time), or Nier, which some wouldn't consider a JRPG. Maybe I forgot something too. But all in all a little less than I thought.

I'll see what I can do about it by the end of the week. I really want it. (Tamers should be next because CORONA DESTROYER)

Haha, I just hope it's successful enough that Namco thinks there is value on making games like that which are faithful to the series it is based on. (considering it's basically going through the anime and all with extra side stuff and an epilogue story).

Ah well, hope it is successful either way, looks great :)

final fantasy 6, 7 and 9
chrono trigger

uh, that could be it. i need to go replay and beat earthbound at some point.

I see. Actually having already played it in English helps a lot!
I think I'll play it next year, even if I haven't played the 360 version.
I do understand some Japanese though.

Yeah going through the plot wasn't bad at all since I basically was playing from memory. I only started going to the wiki's near the endgame when it came time to get items and stuff.

Holy shit, do you guys only play JRPGs or something?

I'm about 50% JRPGs, 40% WRPGs, and 10% everything else (Occasional MMO, Strategy, and Action/Adventure (usually stealth-based) games). There are a lot more RPGs that I've played but haven't finished for one reason or another.

It's not entirely surprising especially if you look at what generation they came into playing video games as well.

Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma

17 games then. That's it really. I never had a ps1 or ps2 through my childhood and teen years, so I missed out on all of those classics. Hoping to catch up sometime through ebaying and emulation.

Not even a contest, 2 all the way.
Sometimes I think that way and then I go play 3 and I then I'm like, "man, I like how fast this is." See, it definitely depends on my mood.

Haha, I just hope it's successful enough that Namco thinks there is value on making games like that which are faithful to the series it is based on. (considering it's basically going through the anime and all with extra side stuff and an epilogue story).

Ah well, hope it is successful either way, looks great :)
That's what I'd originally thought the Digimon World games (and the Monster Rancher games, actually, now that I'm thinking about things from that era) were going to be like--following the narrative of the anime. So... if I wanted an ideal Digimon game, and if it's decent, Adventure might be it.

Oh. T_T I can't read posts for crap anymore. It's okay. I have secret cards in my deck too.

In all seriousness though, I wish this thread would turn into a more interesting/thoughtful discussion about RPGs rather than listing out all games we've played.
What. you need to tell me this info later.

And, well, you know... list threads, etc. That's how they tend to go. :|

i'm afraid to admit this, but the only JRPG's I fully finished are Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Trigger
I own dozens and dozens of JRPG's, but I only get max 10 hours in each normally before I lose my focus and get back to other games or get back to Dr. Retro work

The list is based off what's listed on RPGamer. I'm not listing DLC or MMOs. It's probably pretty complete, but I'm sure I've missed some old PC RPGs.

Damn. Lists galore.

DQ 1-9 except 7 and 6 (working on 6 atm).
FFXII
FF3
Chrono Trigger
Blue Dragon
Eternal Sonata (I really enjoyed this, sorry).

Wish it was a longer list, but I don't always stick with them even if I enjoy them, the list of played vs finished is wildly different. I do come back and give them another go though when I get the itch (DQ6).

One thing that really stands out for me about all these lists is how few of them are for current gen consoles, well in terms of what I would consider the best titles anyway.

With JRPG's retreating to handhelds, and it seems so many living in a shadow of uncertain localisation and declining sales, I kinda fear for the future of RPG's in the West

Chrono Trigger
Megaman Battle Network 3-5
Persona 2 IS
Persona 4
Shin Megami Tensei I
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga I and II

I was never really too big on JRPG's but I'm really into Shin Megami Tensei right now. I'm playing 3 right now in fact.

In all seriousness though, I wish this thread would turn into a more interesting/thoughtful discussion about RPGs rather than listing out all games we've played.

Damn. Lists galore.

Haha, so interesting and thoughtful! Why not make a more interesting contribution if you don't like the way the thread is turning out?

Also, list threads can kind of act like a census so it's interesting to see what lists say about someone's taste/background. It can also lead to good observations like Shahed's a couple posts up.

I think lists are fine if they are accompanied with explanations but the past pages have been an absurdly long lists of JRPGs with little to no explanations.

Also, I've been trying to stir up discussion, as have others by discussing some of the RPGs rather than listing them.

I know it's over 30, but I'd have to go digging through my JRPG collection for names. It would be nice, but futile, since I'd obviously get destroyed by others in the thread.

...And probably those not here yet. GAF...

If it's unfinished JRPG's though, we're on!

I recently replayed Grandia and I'm convinced that everyone should play this game. I'll probably try to put together a RTTP sometime later, but it's an experience. It's an experience.

True. Another thing is, rather than new games, it seems like a lot of stuff on my list I'd replayed in remasters and rereleases. Don't get me wrong, those gave me a chance to play things I wouldn't have otherwise (the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger for example was just not playable for me and I gave up on that, so getting it for DS was awesome). It's not all bad, but it's not a great indication of genre health either.

I did enjoy Encore mode by having Level 6 from the start. And what's a KRPG?
Oh, I'm sorry. I completely missed this. KRPG = Korean RPG (ex: Crimson Gem Saga, Zenonia, Magna Carta, etc.)

I'll get to it eventually. When I played the first game I didn't bother completing the massive optional dungeon and I've considered downloading a complete save game so I don't miss out on anything important in Arc II.
I remember that thing being hell my first time through, but the quest you get in Arc II as a result of doing that dungeon is way worth it, but getting a complete Arc 1 save seems like a better alternative to something that would be reduced to tedium.

Separated the list because I felt the second half broke the thread rule on what we should include, but other people included them anyway.
