Whenever I get a break from school or work or whatever, I tend to pour a lot of time into RPGs or games I've missed. So... I finished a few more things since that list I posted last year, and a quick glance at it makes me realize that I forgot a few games on there. Also wtf was I doing playing FF4 at that time. :|

And I'm finally taking a vacation this summer so I can probably finally take Ar Tonelico 3 out of my backlog, haha.

Never played the Monster Rancher games (though I liked the concept of using discs to get monsters and stuff like that) but I thought the same with the first Digmon World game considering the Pal cover where one of them on the cover isn't even playable and one isn't in the game at all.

Then I found out thanks to the internet years later that DW1 came out before the anime came out. Made sense then but still, I'm surprise it took this long to make a game based on the anime itself and makes me a little sad it's on a console that ensures no chance of localization.

But besides that, everything I've seen makes me excited for the game, I even remembered most of the anime scenes shown in trailers... now just got to hope the execution of the actual game is pulled off well. We'll see...
I think I got Monster Rancher for Christmas once? My dad bought it for me because I used to wake up early to watch the anime (for srs). It's kind of interesting in that if you use Christmas music CDs you can get a Christmas monster, but I had a ton of fun trying out different CDs to give me different things. Like, AC/DC's Razor's Edge gave me a different monster than Suikoden 1. Haha, I'm kind of curious as to whether or not my recent CDs would work. Like if I put a Rise Against CD or a QotSA CD in there. I thought it was a cute mechanic anyway.

Yeah, I feel like Digimon Adventure, had it come out much earlier as a tie-in with the anime series, would've been a nice tie-in. It certainly wasn't as popular as Pokemon back then, but it still had a sizable following. Even if the game isn't good, if marketed alongside the show, it probably would've sold some.

The question is, are you sure you want to?

I liked AT1 and 2, but 3 was too much for me.

I loved AT3 myself but admittedly have never played 1 or 2 (or even heard of the series til I heard of AT3)

edit:

Even if the game isn't good, if marketed alongside the show, it probably would've sold some.

Yeah, I agree with this but I do hope the game is both good and sells well on the PSP. Not to mention it has most of the VAs back and is faithful to the anime series (based on trailers) so anyone who has a PSP in Japan and still remembers the series I think will buy it.

I omitted Pokemon and Legend of Zelda titles, but if they are considered RPGs, I've played them all :)

That should cover them all I think~

I'm going to guess that it has certain tropes that I'm not partial to?

Not really .. the only problem with AT3 is the battle system.
On a musical level it's awesome.. and it's full of things you'll enjoy if you loved the first 2.

on a plot level , you can say that it was the best way they could end the trilogy ...

Not including Action/SRPGs ...

Chrono - Trigger, Cross
Devil Summoner - 1, Soul Hackers
Eternal Arcadia
Final Fantasy - I, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII
Grandia - 1, 2
Koudelka
Legend of Heroes - Sora no Kiseki FC, Zero no Kiseki, Ao no Kiseki
Panzer Dragoon Azel
Paper Mario
Persona - 1, 2 innocent sin, 2 eternal punishment
Phantasy Star 2
Pokemon - R B Y Gold
Resonance of Fate
Saigo no Yakusoku no Monogatari
Star Ocean - 1, 2
Suikoden - II, III, V
Valkyrie Profile
Xenogears
Xenosaga - Ep. I, II, III

Just ... 43? Not as many as I expected. With Action RPGs and SRPGs it would be more though. Might as well list them ...
Demon's Souls
Disgaea - 1, 2
Final Fantasy Tactics, Type 0
Front Mission - 1, 2, 3, 4
Odin Sphere
Parasite Eve
Shining Force II
Tactics Ogre
Tales of Xillia
Terra Phantastica
Valkyria Chronicles - I, II, III
WachenRoder
Ys - I

63 total

Damn, Akselziys.

For some reason, I keep forgetting that Evolution 1 and 2 exist. Probably because I don't own either because I ended up borrowing them instead.

What's the issue with the battle system? Weird changes?

I wanted to get AT3 out of the way because:
-The soundtrack's good.
-I played the previous two and liked them, so why not?
-I've had it in my backlog since its release date. :x

AT1 and 2 have pretty interesting turn-based combat systems. AT3's is a crappy sub-Tales action system featuring a mechanic called "purge" where you watch the characters change/lose clothing. It also has JYB. I mean sure, by all means play it yourself to find out what you think. That's what I'd do even if people told me not to (and it's one of the reasons why my list is so massive).

Pokemon Whatever every gen only

FF7/10 came close to completing both, saw others do it but never all the way myself and never bothered to play them again.

I've tried many FF, Tales, DQ, Chrono...just cant get into them.

AT1 was a classic linear battle system ( 1 magician , 3 supports / attackers )
AT2 is a rythmic evolution of the first with ( 2 magician , 2 supports/attackers )

AT3 is open field classic system ( 1 magician , 3 supports/attackers ) with everything in real time , just like 3D tales , the problem is that unlike 3D tales , the animations are poor and the amount of attacks limited. the number of spell usables by reivateils ( the magicians girls ) are limited , you cannot change them ( spells ) in battle, you cannot mix 2 spell together , support spells have disappeared but their effect are included in another game mecanic, you cannot craft your own spells in dives , you cannot custom your reivateils sync rates as before.

What's new ? 2 things
First is magic entities that you gain by diving that give you additional effect to a persona of the reivateil you use ( each girl has several persona/appareance to choose from ).
Second is the purge system .. clothes are in the way to recieve more power from the tower. so ...well you remove some clothes ( in battle ) on the girl to reach another spell rank/power .... you'll have to shake your dualshock A LOT ... i mean it.

Supermoves ( from AT2 ) are unchanged.

Damn, that is quite the list.

Props to anyone who finished Tales of Symphonia 2 though. Even now that thing is a fresh pile of steaming hot garbage.
I think it's not bad. I liked the monster system. I'll take it over approximately half of the mothership Tales games, at least.

I don't even want to think about how many DS RPGs I've played. Having a long commute truly made a difference.

Oh. I figured it some sort of fanservice type of stuff. I shall assume that it's unskippable and it's there for obvious reasons.

Well, I've played my share of schlock before, so I don't mind trying stuff out even if it's going to have things I'm not going to like. But going in knowing what I should expect isn't a bad thing. And related to that, for some reason, I don't enjoy a lot of the stuff NIS America localizes.

Ugh, that sounds incredibly boring and restrictive compared to the older games. So... it's basically a restrictive AT + a poor man's Tales.

It's even weirder because I'm pretty fond of the Dreamcast, so I should remember all of the stuff on it. But whenever I think "Dreamcast RPG", I think "Record of Lodoss War, Skies of Arcadia & Grandia II".

i have no idea what happenned ... If you ignore the battle system everything else in the game is fanservice for those who enjoyed the setting/characters/plot points from the first 2 games. there is like 1 confusing place really annoying with ennemies in the entire game.

i recall an interview back then with the director saying that they thought the mecanics was fun. ( it isn't )
At least after +100 hours to reach platinium i still like the game music.

I think it's not bad. I liked the monster system. I'll take it over approximately half of the mothership Tales games, at least.

I thought the monster system had potential, and then I kept experimenting with it and my monsters "evolved" back to their first forms.

Since I liked to play Tales multiplayer, the fact that every time your party changes the controls reset to 1P mode, and all 2P shortcuts blanked out...I got frustrated with it pretty quick. Add to that the crappy fanfiction-esque story, janky mystic artes and sorcerer's ring plus re-used assets (I think one of the dungeons was copied right down to the puzzles).

I dunno. I kinda felt terrible playing it in the end lol

It's even weirder because I'm pretty fond of the Dreamcast, so I should remember all of the stuff on it. But whenever I think "Dreamcast RPG", I think "Record of Lodoss War, Skies of Arcadia & Grandia II".

Pretty sure that's what made the Dreamcast amazing. I spent a ton of time with those three games.

The Dreamcast even had the superior version of Grandia II (IIRC)

I liked the AT3 battle system but eh, I've not played the previous two games so I have nothing to compare it to within the series but I liked it. With JRPGs with a battle system I can't stand (like Neptunia 1), I usually won't be able to play much but with AT3, I completed the game no problem and had a lot of fun.

Enjoyed the story as well and certain music tracks were great. (I forget the one but it was near some forest place? Or something but the music playing there was great)

As someone who played every mothership Tales game aside from Destiny remake and the PS3 games, I am curious which games you would rank it over.

Destiny remake is FANTASTIC, played the DC version and loved it. Destiny was also my first (the original) tales game which probably played a part into how much I enjoyed the remake <3

Some of you guys have finished more jRPGs that all the games I have finished and will probably finish during the rest of my life!

---
I have only finished:

FF X
FF X-2
Shadows Hearts: Covenant
The Last Story

But what's interesting, is that jRPG is one of my favorite genres!

Props to anyone who finished Tales of Symphonia 2 though. Even now that thing is a fresh pile of steaming hot garbage.
I like ToS2 because there's a quite a bit of depth with regards to monster growth, capture (really reminded me of Chrono Cross in a way), and evolution. I have mixed feelings towards FR:EE LMBS (because of the flex-range aspect; I've never been very fond of flex-range), but I appreciate aerial usage a lot so I enjoyed maining Emil quite a bit.

I think it's pretty competent. I've played much much much worse.

I think I just got put off to playing the game with the whole "shake your controller to take their clothes off!" stuff. I certainly wasn't expecting that! Sheesh.

I can't stand playing that game. I put it down and never picked it up again. The sequel is better in terms of gameplay and game structure, even with the fanservice CGs and CFW Trick's creepy crap.

Yep; Grandia II on the PS2 had graphical hitches compared to the DC version. I have no idea what the PC version was like, though.

This is a fun topic! Let's see how many I can remember.

Final Fantasy 1 - 10-2, 12 - 13-2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Persona 1, 3 -4
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
Golden Sun
Lunar Silver Star Story
Xenogears
Xenosaga 1 and 3
Vagrant Story
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Mario and Luigi
Dragon Quest 1 -2, 4 - 5, 7 - 8
Pokemon: Red, Blue, Ruby, Black

That's all I can remember. I thought I finished more than that. Oh well.

Oh I agree big time, I loved Neptunia Mk2 (rented it and it's what I wish the first game was like gameplay wise) and played the JP demo of V and am looking forward to that.

I'm okay with fanservice though yeah, Trick was certainly creepy but you didn't see him... too much.

Ah well, it shows sequels can improve at least :)

edit: Grandia 2 on the PS2 was inferior to the DC version? I loved the PS2 version of it regardless but I never saw many problems with it.

Grandia 1 (though I still loved 2, never played 3 though) is still one of my favourite PS1 games today.

if you play AT3 after AT2 ( as you should since all 3 games are directly linked in the overall storyline ) ..you're forced to be frustrated /disapointed .

AT2 battle system was fantastic..it offered quite a bit of flexibility and relied on timing and risks to deal massive damage ..
AT3 Battle system is just very inferior ... Playable but inferior... and yes neptunia 1 battle system is garbage

Damn, that is quite the list.

Props to anyone who finished Tales of Symphonia 2 though. Even now that thing is a fresh pile of steaming hot garbage.

I like it (not as much as Symphonia, of course). And the motion-capped cutscenes (first for a Tales game if I remember?) is pleasing.

Symphonia does a lot of stuff better than Symphonia 2, but 2 has better combat and auxiliary systems and dramatically fewer Colette scenes, so it's a toss-up.

I'm pretty sure it was a port of the PS2 version, with a side of added crashing to desktop since it's a windows version from...back then. My friend played it and had similar complaints to the PS2 version, and the crashing with lost progress. But he played through anyways since the battle system was near-perfect.

Apparently spells are overpowered in that game. It's weird, but I always used just the special moves in that game.

Shaking is not required ( it's not that bad really ) ..you can just do a motion ( a quick motion ) and it will register perfectly fine . and you don't have to do that multiples times per battle ( except bosses )
Try it ( the first 3 hours are Purge free )

The PC version does have some problems, particularly on newer PCs. If you patch the movies, you shouldn't get crashes during those, but there are still random crash points in the game. The PC version also can't handle playing ambient sounds and music at the same time, so if you walk by a fountain for instance, the music will cut out and the water sound plays until you move away. It's mostly minor, though, and I played through it on PC on Windows 7 64-bit over the summer, so it's definitely doable. The increased framerate is really nice, too.

Sounds like a lot of saving even if you're confident with the actual game then. :/

Still, wish we had more JRPGs on the PC but ah well.

There's always The Last Remnant. I loved that game enough to play through it 3 times (one of them on 360). It's probably still in my top 3 JRPGs this gen, besides probably Vesperia and Xenoblade.

I remember my brother put me off it before (360 version I have), I forget why though. Maybe some bugs or stability issues? I forget.

How's the PC version of it?

The PC version is great. Performance issues are gone provided you have a decent PC (it's a UE3 game, which runs great on PC, so your PC doesn't even have to be that good), and the balance changes are ultimately for the better.

I never heard about AT2 til someone recommended me AT3. All I knew about AT2 at the time was some bug that could be game breaking (not sure if it was just NA or EU or both versions).

it's a total shame because the 3 games , despite having stories that can contained within their games are part of a overall plot.
in the AT universe , on the planet there are 3 towers , each game take place in one. And each tower is very different.( in term of power , in term of political structure, in term of magics used )
For example ( no big plot spoilers )
In the first tower , human abuse reivateils for daily work.
In the second tower , human and reivateil share political power and influence.
In the third tower , reivateils keep humans in check and even enslave them!

The various problems in each game are treated and solved in their games but many events that happen in AT1 have direct consequences in AT2 .Without some things in AT1, well things would have been stuck in AT2 , and without some things from AT1&2 , there is like no act4 in AT3.
In the same concept, AT2 has returning character from AT1 ( that are kinda important in the overall plot ) & AT3 has returning characters from both AT1&AT2.

I strongly encourage anyone to play AT1&AT2 as they are better games and AT3 is only "great" if you've played the first 2..

Symphonia does a lot of stuff better than Symphonia 2, but 2 has better combat and auxiliary systems and dramatically fewer Colette scenes, so it's a toss-up.

it's such a shame that they nerfed/limited the levels for the symphonia 1 characters they are very useless after mid-game because your monsters are just so much powerfull.

Well i'm not aware of those problems because i played grandia 2 on pc close to the release date . at the time of release , there was like none of those problems ( for me ) no crashes for me at least ... and it's been too long so i don't remember about ambiant sound +music ( or if there was any problem at all ) i played that on windows 98 by the way ( so yes it was a long time ago )

Pokemon Gold/Crystal/Ruby/Diamond/Platinum/HeartGold
Dragon Quest IX
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2

I have many jRPG's in my backlog but I find it hard to get into the mood to play it from start to end since most of them are 30+ hours.

I remember my brother put me off it before (360 version I have), I forget why though. Maybe some bugs or stability issues? I forget.

How's the PC version of it?

360 version NEEDS an install to run properly. Without it, my friend couldn't even perform the trigger events that are pretty much necessary to get critical attacks for your unions. So after the install you pretty much have some texture pop-in during each new area/cutscene, but it's all good.

PC has a much better framerate (video card allowing, of course), and allows unlimited unique leaders in your teams which changes a lot. Still has the texture pop-in from the 360 version, but there's a way to minimize that.

If you already have the 360 version, an install makes it very playable. No reason not to get the superior version on steam for cheap at the same time though.

Either way, we'll never see a sequel, lol =(

The PC version is great. Performance issues are gone provided you have a decent PC (it's a UE3 game, which runs great on PC, so your PC doesn't even have to be that good), and the balance changes are ultimately for the better.

Sounds good, I see it has a demo on steam so might give it a shot and see how it goes.

Lots of AT stuff...

Hmm, I'll probably give them both a shot then sometime this year. Once I get a few weeks spare and nothing to play.

Edit: Yeah, if you ever want to play The Last Remnant, the PC version is definitely the way to go.

I am kind of curious to see which (similar) games are worse. I would love nothing more than to concede the point but I want to try and play something worse first haha.
Similar like, monster-rearing or ARPG?

I haven't played it in a long time, but Dragonseeds, iirc, lacked some depth when it came to monster rearing and virtual breeding. Compared to a lot of the other monster rearing games out there at the time (ex: Monster Rancher, Digimon World, Pokemon, etc.), it didn't seem to have balancing, skills/stats didn't seem to matter, it's repetitive, etc. I don't remember liking it much.

Shaking is not required ( it's not that bad really ) ..you can just do a motion ( a quick motion ) and it will register perfectly fine . and you don't have to do that multiples times per battle ( except bosses )
Try it ( the first 3 hours are Purge free )
Alright, I'll try it, but it's just weird. The animation for purging isn't skippable, is it.

PS2 ?
The ps2 was inferior to the Dc version.
Yeah... typo.

Oh I agree big time, I loved Neptunia Mk2 (rented it and it's what I wish the first game was like gameplay wise) and played the JP demo of V and am looking forward to that.

I'm okay with fanservice though yeah, Trick was certainly creepy but you didn't see him... too much.
There's a demo of V on JPSN?

Well, fanservice isn't usually directed towards me so I can't say I care for it, but sometimes it really is too much depending on whether or not the developers make it the centerpiece of their game as opposed to other mechanics.
