Jubeat [Konami]

Tiduz

Eurogaime
First part is Kotaku:
The newest member of the Bemani family—which includes ˆ, Guitar Freaks, Pop 'n' Music, et al.—in Japanese arcades is jubeat, a touch-panel game that... well, we're not sure what the hell is going on with this one yet. It's currently on location test in Japan, so we're sure to see how the game behaves in motion soon enough, but it appears that players will have to frantically slap display screens in time to J-pop tunes, competing with others via local or internet connection. That mysterious glowing cube on top of the cabinet? Unsure, but it may simply be for decoration and to increase the obnoxiousness of the seizure inducing lightshow. More on jubeat as we learn about

Second is the original source Arcadeheroes:
Some images of the cabinet for Konami’s new bemani title Jubeat are out and it shows that the game is quite unique - in fact it uses a cube display but it is unclear as to how that will interact with the player (or if they are going to be trying out a holographic type display which has been attempted with some success in the past). It might use a projected image onto the glass but either way the more I learn about Jubeat, the more intrigued I am. The image above was taken from the banner found on the official Konami Jubeat website. Also according to the leaflet that was passed out to locations testing the game, it will feature online play.

Looks pretty interesting, want to see it in action.

I was reading about this elsewhere. I'd like to see the game actually played before I make a judgment. Also, "beat jews." That's... gotta be the first thing almost everyone thinks of.

from what i can tell it looks to be more puzzle oriented in addition to traditional timing-based mechanics of BEMANI games.

the grid layout reminds me of the AKAI MPC...maybe the game is about remixing and sample triggering

"ユビート"

looks like its pronounced yuu beat according to the youtube video...

hilarity deconfirmed.

still, what is going on?

I'm guessing it uses the e-Amusement passes as well to store stats and scores. I already have one for Otomedius, so it would be nice if it did (I think all new Konami arcade games do)

I want to love this. I just don't understand it yet ;o

Regardless, I'm just happy to see Konami making an original music title. The last time they did that was like ... ParaPara? And that wasn't exactly an original concept either. Unfortunately, I don't know of an arcade that would import this ... except maybe Tokyo Game Action.

The game plays a lot like Ouendan/EBA, where in the 4x4 panel you have to tap the buttons where the icons appear, in tune with the beat of the song, of course.

You can also play up to four people it seems... and plus, the cabinets look sexy as hell. I've never seen a cabinet quite like this one. It looks awesome. Too bad it's a stand-up cabinet though, but I guess those are the breaks.

Two new location test videos popped up, thanks for TreIII and Arcade Renaissance for the heads up.

I was a bit sceptical about this when Konami first revealed it but those vids make it look pretty damn good, kind of like a cross beteeen Beatmania & Ouendan. I fear the only chance I'll get to play it is if I'm over in Japan again, there's no way it'll come over to arcades in the UK and the cabinet makes a home port incredibly unlikely.

it looks really fun, but I hope the guy is playing that video in hard mode or something. I couldn't keep track of the notes most of the time

played this at chq in metrotown in vancouver. (with a sign on the machine saying "First arrival in N. American", as they are apt to advertise on their new stuff) it's a pretty funky setup and cabinet design is indeed quite awesome. it's quite plays like ouendan, but doesn't have all the lines that connect markers to indicate what's next. can get pretty hectic when all the panels start lighting up. song list is really small... though. i wanna try it some more...

no way in hell i see a home release for this thing.

I've been pumped about this since seeing the videos around the beginning of the year or whenever, but I'm hugely disappointed that the songs aren't keysounded. I'd love to play it and see how it compares to Pop'n (and IIDX, to a lesser degree).

No point in an arcade game if it isn't demanding.

this seems like it was made with the DS in mind. >_<

Did you watch any videos? Read the description?

I mean, maybe I'm crazy, but this seems like it was made with its dedicated hardware in mind with zero regard for the console or handheld markets. Which is exactly what allows it to even exist and be interesting in the first place.

Haha.. my post from back when it was announced.

Anyway, JuBeat is lame, uBeat is even worse.. but it does have Scatman! It's another in the long-running series of examples that show how poor Konami is at their own genre these days. DJ Max Technika destroys it in just about every way imaginable when it comes to touch-screen rhythm gaming, including presentation, which is really all JuBeat has going for it.

Uh, except for music quality.

You really want to go with YMCA, Barbie Girl, Sandstorm and Scatman over what's in DJ Max Technika?

Really? Okay.

Sure. There are also a few really cool KO's that are worth playing. And I'll take those songs and the interface over the kawaii anime moe moe pop music and backgrounds any day. Whatever, YMMV though.

Put a large amount of money into this while in Akihabara a few months back and absolutely loved it, playing Road of Major's PLAY THE GAME was particularly fun. The relatively small song list was the only thing that I found dissapointing.

I thought nobody cared about this game. Been started playing this about a month ago, and recently started cracking the level 10 songs. It's good to play online against the Japanese players with the assurance that even if you can't pass the song, most of them will be able to save you.

The American version has a different song list from the Japanese and Asian version. Besides, as long as the game is fun, which it is, the music quality matters less. Ouendan has a similar and actually much shittier song list. Doesn't stop it from being a good game. DJ Max is a good game also, it's just kinda pointless to compare the song list since they are aiming for different musical styles.

On another note, Konami is suing Pentavision for patent violation. They do seem pretty desperate these days...

The game is way easier compared to Pop 'n Music and IIDX, but then all first iteration of Bemani games are easy anyway. The next one will certainly be harder.

Hey, play the cheap way.

Put that video into full screen and pretend your monitor can pick up the touches. It's like playing DDR on P2 side even when P1 is the only one playing. Sure your not judged, but you can get the gist of it.

LOL. Now I know why I saw some players scored 0 point when playing against them. They are probably filming it to study the patterns at home.

are there any chances this gets ported to console or the peripheral would be too costly to produce?

I would say it's too costly since the peripheral would be prohibitively expensive. Each button is like a mini-LCD screen.

1) Konami always sues.
Andamiro and Red Octane say hello

2) This game's difficulty seems more based on memorizing a general flow of the song more than anything else. Reading upcoming notes just seems messy, compared to IIDX/Pop'n/GFDM/Etc.

That's true, especially since there's no random option. It can also get less messy if you change the note style to something different. I think there are around 16 styles after you unlocked everything. Still, when you compare the upper level songs, Jubeat still got a long way to go. Besides a few songs, I can pass the highest level songs on my first try. On the rest of the games, I am not even close.
