EXCLUSIVE: The best way to get Cannes buyers hot and bothered is to come to market with a branded property that has potentially big commercial appeal, cool elements and a reasonable budget. Here's one that fits that bill: Andrew Macdonald’s DNA Films has made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to finance Judge Dredd, a 3D film that was scripted by Alex Garland, and will be directed by Pete Travis, best known for Vantage Point and Omagh. The film will be shopped at the festival by IM Global, in the first collaboration since Reliance bought a majority stake in Stuart Ford's foreign sales company.

While Judge Dredd is perhaps best remembered for the forgettable 1995 action film that starred Sylvester Stallone, Macdonald went back to the franchise’s DNA to completely overhaul the film and bring it back to its origins as the UK comic created by John Wagner and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra. Dredd is set in a futuristic world filled with violence, and the character is empowered to act as judge, jury and executioner. Garland's best known for writing the novel The Beach, and scripting the Danny Boyle-directed scifi film Sunshine and 28 Days Later. He also wrote the script for a movie version of the Microsoft game Halo that was scrapped by Universal and Fox. The budget's under $50 million, I'm told. This is the kind of project that you would normally find at a studio. This one looked like it would be done under DNA's deal at Fox, but that deal's going away, and Fox let this one loose.

The guy that played Death in the last Supernatural episode as Judge Death...and Vin Diesel as Dredd. Please.

I would watch it. The 1995 movie is a guilty pleasure of mine....I know it's totally shit but it always makes me laugh.

I loved the comic and thought the movie was pretty decent, right up to the point when they took his helmet off. Guys, the helmet doesn't come off. At all. Period. Non-negotiable. And if you don't think a movie can succeed with only showing the star's lower jaw, this guy disapproves:

Sure, his helmet came off too, but it was rare and only towards the end (save the bit at the beginning when human). Now, in the movie, it was permanently off by, what? 15-20 mins in. Bleh.

But I do hope they do another movie. I love the character.

It's not shit and it's not guilty! :D

Maybe it's just hated in comic book circles but mainstream 18-25 year olds seem to view it as a badass over the top action movie. A bit like demolition man. You had the big-ass robot that looked like it could tear terminator in two, you had them showing off the Lawgiver's different firing modes in the intro, you had the Angel family. And Stallone matched Dredd to a tee.

I was a massive 2000AD and Dredd fanboy growing up.

The 1995 film did a lot right. It had a full size ABC warrior in it ffs! Mean Machine was fucking perfect!

You know i really should go watch it again because its been a long while.

Anyways yes I hope this see's the light of day. More Dredd is always a good thing :D *hugs the facist bastard*

The movie was a failure, but lot of folk seem to have enjoyed it. It obviously pissed off some Dredd fan boys but it was a competent flick.

I expected far more raping of the setting and character than they actually did. I think part of it's failure was sticking too close to the look of the comic since it looked stupid too many people.

Nah, the design work was the best thing about the movie (although the redesigned Judges uniforms weren't the greatest).

Where it failed was in playing up the black humour, lunacy and severity of Dredd's world. The film needed more Boing!, futsies and Ugly Clinics, with Judges as implacable enforcers of a brutal legal system that was necessary to keep the madness of the Mega City in check.

...and far, far less Rob Schneider.

As I said, it's not about the movie itself, but the look that likely kept away much of the audience from even seeing it. Outside of comic fans, Judge Dredd looked stupid as hell with it's universe and outfits. It's amazing they kept what they did and not try to turn it into something else during the conversion to live action.

Hm, I take your point, though I think the world of MC-1 looked pretty good (and faithful). I don't think many fans of the comic would have objected to a more toned down version of the Judge uniform though, especially if the film had been more faithful in other ways.

I always thought that something more like Ezquerra's original designs (the black leather, motorbike cop look) would have been interesting and perhaps more acceptable to a wider audience. Certainly, McMahon's big boots or McCarthy's samurai helmets would have been out of the question - utterly fantastic visually, but perhaps too fantastic for a live action film.

JD would be better as a CGI movie because when you translate that character into a flesh and blood human being you lose a lot.

Let me just leave the greatest comic panel ever drawn here:

"Gaze into the face of Fear" I am a kid again seeing that! Genius!

Is it from the choose your own adventure Dice Man series? I had them, they were great!

Nah, it's from "Judge Death Lives", back in 2000AD progs 220-something.

Yup, some things just shouldn't be turned into live action. JD was one of those things, but I think they did a good job either way.

Warhammer 40k for example, another thing that just would seem stupid in live action form.

TBH, except in the hands of a good writer (like Dan Abnett, for example) WH40K often seems pretty stupid! ;-)

I was a ridiculous 2000AD fanboy during the 80s. Had a stack of the weekly and monthly specials that filled about 8 huge crates. One of my biggest regrets is selling them all in 1993 and using the money to buy weed and acid for my deadbeat friends.

If done right, this could really be a great film. The Dredd universe is so rich and varied. There are the mutie wastelands, the huge towering megatowers that housed entire cities, and then there is the whole Judge Death story arc that would fucking OWN in movie format.

Plus there's the whole 3D aspect as well.

There are many other characters in the 2000AD world that would also make great films. My favorite picks would be 'Hewligans Haircut' or 'Rogue Trooper' (which had a surprisingly good PC game a few years ago)

You've rather missed your own point here: RoboCop is Judge Dredd: The Movie.

It's far closer to the comics in terms of tone and humour and the writer of RoboCop readily admits he ripped off Dredd.

But personally I don't mind, because RoboCop is a great film and a I very much doubt Judge Dredd could ever become something of the same calibre.

(Likewise the RoboCop comics are awful and golden era Dredd comics are awesome.)

I'm cautiously optimistic that this will turn out half way decent. Garland is infinitely more talented than that clown De Souza, so the screenplay will hopefully be quite good.

The >$50 million budget makes me nervous however. On the other hand, I'm inclined to think that also means there will be less studio execs feeding at the trough, trying to fuck things up.

Until the last 3rd of the movie when the film turns into something else entirely, like every other Garland written script :/

Movie wasn't that bad. It was really brought down by Rob Schneider. I loved Armand Assante's over-the-top role. He was one of the saviors of it.

I didn't mind the original film either.

This film will be a piece of shit though, from the director of Vantage Point

Bleuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
