Holmes: Do you think Punk has what it takes to be the next big thing?

Hogan: It depends. It’s not Punk’s decision, it’s Vince McMahon. When he was on TV the other night and said he could make ten John Cenas, that’s true. When Vince McMahon says he can make another Hulk Hogan, that’s true. Everybody’s replaceable. It’s the power of the TV, it’s not the power of the wrestlers. Now, if you’re given the football, you’ve got to be able to run with it. Cause a lot of guys were given the ball. The Rock ran with it a certain distance. Stone Cold ran with it a certain distance. Hulk Hogan ran with it a certain distance. We all have our run. But it’s really the power of the TV. TV is the star.

This is the first sensible thing Hulk Hogan's said in twenty years.

While much of this angle’s genesis came from Punk to Vince McMahon, in the end, the angle was going to be shaped for the purposes of getting the family over primarily, and Punk secondarily. In the end, Punk is a bigger star for it. His elevation wasn’t shut down as it would have been in the original booking concept, where he was to return at the end of the show, get beaten up by HHH, left laying with a pedigree and Alberto Del Rio would come down, cash in his briefcase, beat him to win the title, and Del Rio would go to SummerSlam and defend against Cena.

I know Im a little late responding to this, but man.... that just gives me chills. After all thats happened, THATS how they were talking about ending RAW? And it was actually considered?

Again, just.... haunting.

First things first - Thank you Dream. I appreciate what you do and I hope you keep doin' it.

Second, I've always, always shied away from TNA - has TNA had any awesome moments? All we ever hear anymore is heckling (for good reason) but was there ever an event, or something awesome going on that will stick with you for some time? If so, what was it?

I think we're all in agreement that their last PPV, Destination X was a step in the right direction. It's a definite must see. If you don't have the time, at least only check out the Ultimate X match on that PPV card. Jack Evans vs. Low Ki vs. Austin Aries vs. Shiima Xion.

The rest of the card wasn't that bad either.

Edit: Tajiri hasn't aged a day.

Serena seems pretty good but she doesn't know how to run the ropes... it's a pretty glaring flaw in her ability. She is pretty good overall though.

I thought she was going for the GTS for a moment there....
I think she attempted to do KENTA's (the original) GTS which connects with the sternum/chest instead of the head like Punk's.

edit - she's terrible on the mic though. not surprised about that considering what i heard in her WWE run but wow.

Tony Schiavone was the greatest announcer evah.

LOL.

I remember that shit.

I don't know what GAF's opinion on Tony is, but I regard him as one of my all time favorites. I miss him announcing wrestling. I got a chance to sit behind him during the WCW days, and he was always nice and said hi to the fans sitting behind the announcers table. I loved his voice, and wit.

A lot of people hate him just because of the lines he was fed. I have no issue with him, really, but sometimes it did get a little grating hearing about how this is the greatest night in the history of our sport.

Most people hopped on the hatewagon with the whole "That'll put butts in the seats" occurrence. Blame Bischoff for that one.

As a play by play announcer, I thought he was just fine and I had no problems. He never got in irritating shouting matches with his coworkers (ahem, Cole and Lawler) and while he did play the straight man to Heenan a lot of the time, it was never exaggerated or annoying in my eyes.

I'll tell you who I miss doing color commentary - Zybyzko. But most people hate him. Diff'rent strokes, I guess.

For as much shit as we give Tony, at least he was discussing what he was actually watching and not putting himself or some other angle over.

I didn't really have a problem with Tony until later on when he just started to sound uninterested or just burned out from the product that was on. You can only yell and scream about the NWO so many times.

He is a great announcer, better than Cole by a longshot, but you could tell just by his voice he was sick of seeing the same thing every week. He would still try hard to sell it but inside of him he was like "NWO takes over again? how shocking.."

Pretty much. The thing with Tony was he actually sounded like he knew about wrestling and what he was talking about when he would call a match. A lot of times he would be able to actually call actual holds that were being used which made him sound more legitimate than what Cole does.

*Enzuigiri happens*
Cole: OH a kick a to the back of the skull!

*CM Punk applies any submission move*
Cole: "ANACONDA VICE, ANACONDA VICE"

*Daniel Bryan does something*
Cole: "NERD NEENER NEENER"

It was so refreshing to hear JR on Monday especially when he said enzuigiri.

You missed a few other notables

*Orton powerslam*
"Scoop Slam!"

*Any variation of any move*
"Modified *insert default move name here*"

Granted I haven't heard that last one for some time

JR keeps getting pulled off of Raw for being too old, yet Lawler is older than JR.

Lawler doesn't act his age and lusts over the divas thus giving off the illusion of not being so old.
I had no idea of this little fact, interesting

It doesn't matter how old he is, JR is still better than any commentator they have, Josh Matthews is pretty good too but they can't recognize talent. The only commentator that can hold a candle to JR is Joey Styles, but we all know where they stand with him. Is it just me or when JR came back to the booth on Monday, did anyone notice Jerry's commentating improve a great deal?

Lawler and Cole don't have any chemistry together, that's been apparently for a long time.

Cole was much better when he was working on Smackdown with Tazz and JBL, or with CM Punk. That doesn't change the fact he's Todd Pettengill's replacement. But he seems to work best when sharing play-by-play and color duties with a 2nd person than working in an exclusive role as one or the other. Guys who can switch on the fly between doing color and play by play in the middle of a match.

Watching late 90s Raw with the 3-man booth of JR, Cole, and Kevin Kelly didn't sound too bad. JR did most of the talking while Cole and Kelly chime in every once in a while. Cole might just be better on color than play by play.

He went from saying "Shutup Cole" every five seconds to actually commenting on the match every now and then.

He's terrible as an exclusive play by play guy, but he's really only been bad for the last year or so. It's basically what happens when a commentator take's vince's instructions to not mention moves and to try to tell stories instead of calling the action 100% to heart. He's a yes man on commentary, calling things the exact way vince wants him to.

Does anyone bother to tweet him this feedback since he is checking twitter so much...

I really liked the Schiavone, Tenay, and Heenan/Zybysko trio. Tenay had great knowledge of a lot of moves and was brought in to help get the luchadors over by explaining what they do. Let's be honest - a lot of fans in the WCW heartland had no clue what was happening, except for a lot of spinning.

Tenay as analyst, Schiavone for play by play, and Heenan or Zybysko for color. Works for me. Never liked Tazz's commentary, really. Ventura was a lot of fun, but worked best with Vince's over the top ridiculousness. Man, Vince on commentary really is a hoot. A real showman.

Well Lawler is probably healthier and doesn't have half his face paralysed.
Lawler also probably wouldn't know what to do if he wasn't in the industry

The thing with Vince on commentary back in the days was that since he owned the company, he had to really sell wrestlers and the angles. Now that his company is successful, he'd rather just get personal laughs than continue to improve his product. And of course we see where that's gotten him over the past couple of years.

So great when Vince and Ventura did commentary for one night again:

What I remember about Vince was every pin was a three count. "1,2,3 noooooo"
