Jump scares that got you good

I'll never forget the moment in FEAR that you do something, like activate a switch or some shit, in a room with glass windows. Then you turn around and ring girl is staring at you through the other side. My cousin and I are playing at like 4 am and start walking out of the office starting straight at her. The second you exit the room she runs right at you and we fucking let out a death scream and my uncle runs out from his room screaming at us to go to bed.

Playing until dawn near the end and my wife came in the room. I said there's so many jump scares they don't get me anymore. Then something jumps out a drain and we both jump a foot in the air screaming. Lol. Love this game

Dead Space is full of them. That game is really effective at making sure I jump out of my seat because they consistently nail the whole "when you least expect it" deal.

Also, surprised at no mentions of RE4's oven man. The lack of jump scares throughout RE4 made that one pretty noteworthy for me.

Condemned, locker.
I knew it was coming i fucking knew it but I still jumped out my arsehole.

Doom 3, pinky and the window.
It was 2 in the morning and I jumped out my arse and instantly hit esc lol
I went to the kitchen to make a brew and as I walked past my front door my mate banged on the door window.. at 2 in the morning I almost fucking died.

Resident Evil 3 - Fucking Nemesis was waiting for me outside the save room. The moment I came out of the room he picked me up by my neck. Almost gave me a heart attack.

Resident Evil 4 - I'm playing the PS4 version after years of not visiting this game (it's still amazing) so I've forgotten everything about it. The random Snake in a box fucking got me LOL. Also, those dogs after the first giant fight, what was the name? El gia something something.

Until Dawn - That section in the basement with the
ghost
thingy, almost made me scream. Loved that game, really have to replay it sometime.

P.T - "Turn around. I SAID TURN AROUND!"

The biggest ones for me were all in the B scenario of Resident Evil 2 where it was as if the game broke some of the rules that had been established. For example there was a particular door loading animation where they showed zombies appearing in the doorway during the loading screen itself, that one really got me good. I believe that they also stuck a couple of zombies in one of the save rooms, which of course tend to never have enemies in them. Then there's one of the Mr.X appearances where he smashes through a wall. It would be one thing if this happened in a cutscene. But as I recall, it happens during gameplay which made it all the more terrifying.

Resident Evil.

Dogs through windows.

Dogs through windows.

This is really the big one for me and the thing I remember most about that game. I remember setting up a few friends by handing them the controller just before that part while I "went to the bathroom" just to see their reaction from around the corner.

Batman Arkham Knight. Worked because I wasn't expecting it at all. Mostly in horror games you can sense they're about to spring something plus you expect it as a matter of course.

I was just chilling looking for items here and there and whabam!

That was 18 years ago but it left a mark on me.

The fact that they double up on this jump scare is what makes it the most effective in the series. Riiiight after you beat him and he falls down, you're likely to think you're safe as you move out into the hallway. It's completely quiet, you turn the corner, then BOOM. Perfect jump scare. The window dogs ain't shit by comparison.

Yes, this from Condemned: Criminal Origins got me good.

The other one is from PT, when Lisa appears out of nowhere and then you pass out.

I also almost died when playing FEAR and Alma creeped up to you in RING style when you were crawling through a tight space. Was only 15 when I played it.

Half-Life 2 - Every poisonous headcrab
And this! 100% This! I always got the eeby jeebys when they hissed. And then jumped. Eugh!

It's a bit foggy since it's been many years. But I'm surprised nobody mentioned S.T.A.L.K.E.R yet. The first time I went underground and those invisible motherfuckers appeared out of nowhere in front of me, showing their face.

My mom couldn't stop laughing for an hour after she saw me jump up a meter in my chair >.>

Dead Space 2

Was walking down a hall, cocky as fuck because y'all know I played the first game and know what to expect.

Turn a corner, see a necro run around the next corner of the hallway. Cool, obviously I'm gonna go around and he's gonna pounce so lets get prepared.

I go around, nothing. For a split second anyway. A second one attacks from the vent to the left, which is more or less right in my face. Launched my controller in fear. Then the first one ran down the hallway to help finish the job.

One of the only jump scares to truly scare me, F.E.A.R., when you see those cloaked frog-like (?) guys for the first time. I walk in a dark room, and suddenly just above my head, high up on the wall, something uncloaks and starts moving.

The only time I literally jumped from a jump scare. And I don't think it even was meant to be one.

Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem

I don't even have to say which one. Anyone who's played this will know what I mean.

Been playing condemned this week after getting a 360 over the weekend. Haven't played it since it originally came out. Scared the shit of me then and still does.

Speaking of which, sega should remaster both games and make a third one. The world needs more condemned!!

I've just started to play that. Dead Space is so tense, early on but the sequel makes it even scarier with the effects. They sneak up so well and are hard to pinpoint. I'm always reversing but then they come out the vent from behind, the fire system set off. Don't panic!

I need to go back and finish Condemned. I needed a break but forgot all about it. After Dead Space 2..Is Condemned 2 worth playing as well?

Wish I got to play PT. The gifs in here look terrifying and that's without sound.

I was playing Eternal Darkness with a friend (during the daytime, no less), and while no one else was right there with us, there were other people with us in the house. I activated the bathtub jumpscare and it made me jump more violently than anything in my life prior. My friend pretty much dove backward, yelling "No!" I was shaking as I turned off the Gamecube. The scene and Alexandra Roivas' scream stayed with me the entire day.

Later that night, I had a nightmare. I don't remember what the dream was about, but I woke up screaming. The sound woke my mother up and she left her room to check on me. She asked if I was OK and I said it must have been a bad dream.

I asked what time it was, and she said it was 3:33.

Damn

The main PT one where Lisa gets you is still one of the scariest moments I've seen in a game. Like all the examples here are nullified after viewing it once (some by even knowing it's going to happen) but not the one in PT. I can look at a video of it right now after seeing it so many times and still get spooked. I wouldn't even dare play it by myself.

I had my headphones on. My parents thought I'd found a dead body in my room or something.

I may have made some noise myself. I know I literally levitated for a moment. Truth be told I found that mini-quest middling and was basically only paying half attention to the screen (with headphones on) thinking when I sort it out I'm getting back to the main quest when whammo. It was actually a really beautifully executed jump scare.

Haven't played one with jump scared for years... remember the School in Fear 2 not being nice playing alone though.

Dead Space 1+2 had a few.

A better question.. what 'action' based fps / tps recently has had some good jump scares. (rather than just overwhelming atmosphere like 'Evil Within')

Good grief, all these comments about the infamous Arkham Knight one.

I'm too stubborn to look it up, so when I finally get around to playing that game (it's sitting on my PS4 HDD), I'll be going in like it's PT or something.

Fuck, what's that video where a group of people are playing through some survival FPS game where you have to escape from a bear in some abandoned house? They keep freaking out because of the jump scares. Any ideas GAF?

You're thinking of Condemned 2.

Ah,yes. The time I called my phone number in Silent Hill 4: The Room and it rang. Do not put phones in breast pockets, folks.
