JURASSIC PARK - A Thread 65 Million Years In The Making

Go read the first book for those who haven't. It's much better than the movie.

First book is great, but I wouldn't say it's a LOT better than the movie. Definitely smarter, but the movie kinda did its own thing while not exploring a lot of the material that the book did.

I still stand by JP2/Lost World being pretty mediocre, upon repeated viewings. When the writing is bad, its very bad, some of the acting is off/poor, and the directing just seems a little sloppy. I think the CGI/puppetry is worse (or looks worse) than Jurassic Park, especially when it comes to interchanging between them. It feels a lot easier to go, "Yup, that's a puppet" or "Yup, that's CGI" compared to Jurassic Park. The first scene with the stego baby looks pretty bad--you see maybe have of the stego's body, but ONLY the head/neck move. The rest of the puppet is just immobile.

Also lots of scenes where characters look off-camera at dinosaurs, instead of having them both in the scene. Feels cheaper.

However, the second book is LEAGUES better than the second movie. I think most of you will agree.

I disagree. The second book is not very good. It has serious pacing issues. Better than the second movie, maybe, but leagues better, absolutely no way.

At the very least the movie doesn't go into a random long ass lecture about how Chaos Theory applies to evolution in the middle of the story because nothing else of interest is happening at all.

"Oh wow, look at that, the Parasaurolophus are drinking their own urine. How exciting. Please tell us more about how Site B could teach us about the role of behavior in extinction."

Crichton was always making sure you knew he did his research, but he at least usually injected it into the story. In The Lost World he really didn't.

I thought in basically every Crichton book he writes long essays about science or whatever the topic of the book is and they're only tangentially related to the story at hand.

I remember a scene in the book "Rising Sun" where the two main characters are in an elevator and they overhear a conversation between two other people about the economics of the 1980s and how Japan's role had changed.

Don't blame Michael Crichton, he didn't want to write a sequel, it was the fans and Spielberg that pushed him. :P

It really shows... The Lost World barely has a message to display. It's basically a retread in a less interesting environment.

So I had a friend from out of town over for the weekend, and it turned out she never saw JP.. i couldn't believe it, so of course I grabbed the blu ray and put it in. She was blown away not only about how well it held up visually, but how fun of a movie it was and that she never saw it before this. Needless to say, she now wants to watch the sequels. I'm happy she liked it, as of by far this is my favorite movie.. Also, it was a blast watching the movie with someone who really didn't know what was going to happen.

Dinosaurs have feathers, any movie that is at all attempting any sort of realism and not be a cartoon should have dinos with feathers. There is no reason they shouldn't have feathers. If you want a realistic looking dinosaur they need to have feathers since well they had them.

You shouldn't let nostalgia trump facts.

Find a science textbook produced for schools that mention dinosaurs. None of them in print lack feathers now. It makes no sense to keep up that charade when kids are being taught that dinos had feathers. Why confuse people?

Yeah, I don't get the feathered dinosaur hate.. I think everyone thinks feathers will make dinosaurs look like 6 foot turkeys or something..

That said, I do agree with others that JP has a certain art style set for their dinosaurs, and should stay loyal to it while incorporating science for a hybrid of real and fiction. I would say they should keep the raptors looking close to their appearance from the first 3 films, while introducing a fully feathered smaller variation if they do a JP4. More importantly, JP4 should feature Carnotaurus, I would love to see them appear as in the TLW novel minus magic chameleon ability.

The island stuff in TLW is great (except for the stupid raptor kick) but as soon as the movie hits San Diego the movie shifts. Should have ended it on the island.

Atleast the screenwriter got what he deserved, hehe.

Agreed. That San Diego part was ridiculous and was not in the book. Great example of blatant Hollywood bastardization.

Jurassic Park holds up well as a movie, but as a 14 year old kid, The Lost World was pretty amazing. I enjoyed both of the first two books as well, having TLW in hardcover.

By Jurassic Park III though, I was able to really appreciate how terrible the franchise had become. :P

I usually turn it off when they fly off in the helicopter in the end.

Joe Johnston really fucked that movie up something awful.

The hype I had for that movie was out of this world.

I for one really enjoyed The Lost World. There were some childish bits that I wish were excluded, but overall I thought it was passable.

Jurassic Park III on the other hand, I would rather not even speak of that trash.

I can't believe some people here actually enjoyed The Lost World. Sure, maybe when your 10 years old, but I dare you to watch it again right now. My god, the film is full of plotholes. What annoys me the most isn't the girl kicking the raptor, but that Greenpeace asshole who takes out the bullets of that hunter guy. He shows off with the bullets in the chopper I believe, while the T-Rex killed some people and was the cause of them running into THE TAHHHL GRRRRASSS. It just doesn't make any sense.

That being said, I'm almost done with the first book again. It holds up pretty good, I like it better than the movie, although I must say the first Jurassic Park also hold up as a great film. The third one is ok I guess.

I'm pretty much convinced that JP4 will suck but I'm going to watch it anyway.

Only one I had was the green rubber T-Rex directly to the right of the red one with spikes on the back. Not sure if it was from the original or TLW though. Actually judging by my age, I'm pretty sure it was TLW.

lol and you're complaining about other people liking a film.

I've gotta say that red JP logo still has this strange effect on me. It's full of power, because of the red color I think, and also the nostalgia of course.

Seeing the rumored cast gives me a little hope, but I just don't think they can come up with something fresh and interesting enough to make a big impression. What was so great about the first one was the park, the second one had lots of dinosaurs (gotta admit that was pretty cool), the third one was a rather generic action flick which had to poo on the T-Rex to introduce another, stronger dinosaur. How are they going to top that? We've seen too much T-Rex because of the Lost World and Spinosaur is rather lame.

So, favorite Jurassic Park game? Most people growing up loved the Genesis one; it was a shooter, and you could play as a Raptor. But I had the Super NES original, and it was amazing. A 'large' open world, and plenty to explore. It was also insanely tough, had difficult to manage first person areas in doors, but that made it all the more scary and fun.

I played the Sega CD version of the game, which was basically a point and click adventure. Really entertaining when I was 12, but I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it now. I also had the Game Boy version of the game, which was a port of the NES version. It shared some of the Super NES graphics, but was broken down into levels.

Remember finding that secret area in the mountains a 1up in it you could get over and over and over again. Infinate Lives+Rocket Launcher+Bolas :)

I made notes for myself where everything was. I wrote down every ID card I found, Where I needed ID cards so I remembered where to go when I found one. Beating that game in one sitting is a truly grueling accomplishment.

You have the Carnotaurus! >:(

I wanted that so bad! I was sitting in Toys R Us: the Carnotaurus in one hand, and 3 mid-size dinos in the other.

"I'll get the Carno next time. Better to get 3 than 1."

...That time never came. :(

I did cross paths with one a few months later when we were traveling across country, but my parents wouldn't let me get it because we were traveling, "You can get it when we get home." I never saw one in stores after that.

Poor Eddie getting torn in half while saving everyone's asses in TLW, that shit was brutal. Should've been Vince Vaughn instead.

Also all you little bitches whining about dinosaurs having feathers are this dude:

That's the Dino Riders Stegosaurus I think.

Ah ok.. Damn, I was hoping one of those prototypes showed up with somebody willing to share pics, haha. Ah well, there is always hope they will release the new molds with the inevitable JP3D toyline.

I also made a similair mistake with the Carnotaurus during my childhood never to see it in stores again.. That said I managed to get for $35 off of ebay a few years back. I love the thing.

I'm sorry, but anyone that thinks the book would have translated into a good film is shitting themselves. There is a reason why adaptations are called adaptations.

Plus, Speilberg himself said that's what JP2 was for: putting the shit that he left out of JP1 back in.

It does make me a little sad that Muldoon dies in the movie adaptation.

But I mean that scene is a classic so I'm not too sad haha.

If you ever watch the DVD behind the scenes features, you realize just what a miracle it was that everything turned out the way it did in the end.

The JP BTS features in itself are a great showcase for learning about movie production as a whole.

Jurassic Park started out as a sloppy mess and turned into solid fucking gold.

It wasn't just Speilberg and Winston that made that film - it was everyone.

The book was a great book, the movie was a great movie. I think if they had literally adapted the book completely, it wouldn't have made for as exciting of a movie. But the 2nd book should've been adapted, that garbage San Diego part that got tossed in there should have never made it past script revision
