• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

just bought gears 4 on PC and literally nothing gets it to work.

This is why i dont do PC gaming anymore

Gotta love PC gaming.

lol

This is all on Microsoft. Their proprietary store on their own OS is significantly worse than basically any competitor. Nothing to do with PC gaming. Even uPlay and Origin these days are really good stores compared to the Windows store. And this new iteration of their store has been shit for years, it's just that people actually started to realize it when "real games" started releasing on the store and actual load was put onto it. Microsoft should have really tightened up their store before they started the initiative to make it a Steam competitor.

Sorry OP, I can't help, I don't know of a fix. My experiences with the MS store have been similarly miserable and I just gave up on it. Just not worth the games on it for me.

I don't know if there is rhyme or reason as to why Windows Store downloads don't work. It is definitely frustrating. Forza Horizon 3 and Gears 4 will download but Recore won't. I get a download error when trying to get the game. I'm hoping it will work after the busy weekend is over but I'm grabbing Gears 4 as I type.

Microsoft needs to get more shit for this, only reason they don't is because barely anyone uses the Windows Store to download full games. It's absolutely farcical. Gears 4 worked for me first time but then patching the game was horrible because you had to have 60GB free on the installation drive. Horizon 3 was also a fiasco to download properly, so many GBs wasted.

Try resetting the windows store from command line.

People derping like issues like this are exclusive to the Windows Store. I occasionally have to change my region to the netherlands to get games to work in Steam. This is usually due to a missing update. OP also check the windows store to see if you have an update to the Windows Store app.

Yeah this shit happened to me. I couldn't figure out what's wrong, got a refund.

Not buying another thing from that shitty store :/ at least my KI works.

I'm still amazed that MS managed to put out something even worse than GFWL.

They won't see a dollar from me, and I'd buy quite a few of their games if they were released on Steam.

I am amazed that MS is willing to release an OS/Store in a very unstable manner, it's like they don't even care after reading what OP had to go through where it ends up his account was problematic and MS had to make a new one and transfer everything over JUST so someone who bought something from the store can actually play/use it. Embarrassing for a software company.

Yes, it's really comical how bad they are. Why do they even release their store in that state ? I mean it's not like they'll kill Steam if they release earlier so why not at least wait it works.

This happens every time with those threads. "Surprisingly" enough I don't see as much posts in the "XXX game is UNPLAYABLE on PS4/Pro!" threads that pop-up on Neogaf saying "that's why I don't play on console".

And now, in the next thread about how PC gaming is terrible and so on, you'll get people using this thread as some sort of example that PC releases are all fucked up and you have to spend hours to fix all problems.

Pretty much. It's standard Gaf shitposting on PC threads. just ignore it.

What did you expect from buying a game from the Windows App Store?

I have a lot of issues with the Windows App Store but I've gotten three games from it and not one have them has ever had an issue booting up

Please don't make posts like this when you don't know what you're talking about

In my case when I couldn't get it to run it was because my SSD didn't have twice the HD space needed for the game. See it is an 80GB game but to apply a patch that came out you need an additional 80GB and I didn't have it.

Also from what I have gathered it pretty much has to be installed on your C drive.

Good luck OP. It took me over a day to get mine running.

I bought one game from the Windows store and had trouble starting it up.

Before that I had trouble even downloading it, then had to reinstall windows to fix the mess that store made.

Using that piece of shit is like playing Russian roulette.

You're one to talk. Download issues are INCREDIBLY common on Windows store, so much so that they've had to push updates specifically to alleviate it multiple times, and even after that Gears 4 was set to, for instance, redownload the entire game on one of its early patches for many people that had the supposed update fix.

There's a reason this thread is full of crowdsourced solutions people are copy pasting, and that's because it's a common issue.

Has MS even publicly addressed or acknowledged the myriad issues people still have with downloading large PC games from the Windows Store? I'm kind of stunned that these stories happen so frequently. Without any comment on the WinStore situation, it sends the message that they give zero fucks about prioritizing PC gaming.

worst case scenario op, try a fresh windows 10 installation. Was having problems with weird sounds and games crashing when alt tabbing between windowed and fullscreen. After running scanners and doing clean driver installations, i still had the problem so did the fresh install. What's cool was that doing the fresh install kept some of my settings and all programs installed on other drives still worked. I just had to reinstall programs/apps that were previously installed on the system drive. You even have the options of keeping non-program files on system drive.

PC was a mistake

Also a good place.

Is there actually a defense for the Windows store? I still can't download Gears 4 from it.

What's your problem with it?

I'd also like to say that the people who are shit talking the WStore are a vocal minority from what I can tell. All these people derailing the thread instead of helping OP.

Is anyone even using the terrible Windows Store? Doesn't seem like it has any kind of meaningful market share.

Yes, people are using it to play Forza Horizon 3, and Gears of War 4, Minecraft, Halo 5: Forge, ReCore, Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, etc.

Like come on the store isn't fucking trash.

Funny to see posts like this coming from the guy who just 1 post ago was saying:

The games are fine, but the store is trash. I got Gears4 for free from buying a 1070 but the biggest issue I faced was downloading the thing. I had to restart and cancel it about 10 times and even then I could only get it to download at CRAWLING speeds. I had to dedicate an entire day to download a game that should have been downloaded in a few hours. In 2017 that's a joke.

Yes bring my post out of context, because I had also linked a different support page in that comment. Come on m8.

Also to OP try playing the game on a different account. That might fix it.

kk boi then this thread should be locked.

So let's go back to your last two posts - you don't see how suggesting to the guy to make a second account just to use the game he purchased isn't at odds with your claim that "Like come on the store isn't fucking trash"?

All my ms store games are on my non main HDD so no, it doesn't have to be in the C drive. I did have the same problem of needing something crazy like 180gb to install a small patch. There wasn't even any indication that it was making a second copy of the game because the whole process was masked by the patch download process T_T

That's not a windows store problem. That's an actual bug with the profile system on windows. It's been plaguing old accounts. I mean my account is currently being effected by the bug.

Whew, hear that guys, it's not a fault of using the windows store. It's merely a fault of the underlying technology built into the operating system that is crucial to executing anything bought off the store in the first place. I'm sure that totally makes people happy to use said store.

I thought I'd be able to have a civil conversation, but clearly not so I'm done with this. I don't care enough to sway your opinion.

I was just trying to inform you and others that it wasn't the store but a bug that only affects old windows accounts.

Your posts say otherwise. Especially the one calling for the thread to be locked because you didn't want people badmouthing the windows store.

That's a real neat meaningless distinction.

Wait what? I'm asking for it to be closed because the problem was solved. If you wanna bad mouth the WS Store make another thread for it.
