Just Dance, PS4 Eye or Xbox One Kinect?

A family member of mine loves the Just Dance series on the Wii, however she mentioned this afternoon that she would like to dance without the controllers.

What is the difference between using the PS Eye or the Kinect? There is no Xbox One in the household, but they have a PS4 and I was thinking of just getting them the PS4 Camera and Just Dance, however I've been reading that there are problems with the camera recognizing people. Has anyone had experience with this game on the PS4, or is getting the Kinect version better?

Big price difference between purchasing a Xbox one rather than just a PS camera lol.

If all you have is the PS Eye, then of course, go for JD on PS4. I do believe you need the Move, and it's not too much different than the Wii games.

With that being said, Xbox and Kinect are naturally the de facto platforms for (modern) dancing games, but to spend $450 for one genre is a mighty high ask (though Fantasia is great on Kinect as well).

I always assumed the PS versions used the PS Move. Is that not the case?

Move is optional. Looks like some people have issues with camera only and recommend Moves instead, some just say re-adjust the camera. From using Playroom I found the PS4 camera is at least moderately accurate at tracking, but it's not the same as a dancing game so I can't attest to it's performance there.

there's an app now that you don't need either, really.

you can use your smart phone like a wii remote to play with any console you choose.

that said, the kinect one is probably better if you prefer to use a camera

I believe the kinect version is probably better?

Apparently Just Dance can be played on the PS4 in the following ways

PS4 Camera or PS Move Controllers required
There are two ways to play Just Dance 2014 on PS4:
(1) With the PS4 Camera, this device is sold separately
(2) With the PS Move controllers, sold separately
The PS Move controllers do not require use of the PS4 camera

We have it for ps4, no need to use the Move, but it presents you the option to do so when you boot up.

The tracking isn't bad, once it actually finds you. My kids play it a ton and love it. The number of songs available out of the box is disappointing.

I have Just Dance 2015 on the Xbox One, so here's some thoughts on that:

1) You can pick motion control from either the Kinect, or via Just Dance Now (an app for your smartphone**, effectively making it a wireless handheld controller)

2) The Kinect motion detection for JD2015 feels a lot looser, compared to last year's JD2014. It's a lot more forgiving, which is great for kids; maybe not quite as challenging for adults, star-wise.

I suspect it's been adjust like that to bring the Kinect in line with how the smartphone app would score positions. That's just my impressions with it, though.

Fwiw, menus and navigation are a lot faster & easier with the Xbox controller, even though the Kinect is used for the dance routines. Just grab it when needed.

If your friend is into Just Dance (and considering a console), you can also get the new Dance Central: Spotlight on the Xbox One. It's a $10 game, with maybe a dozen songs included. There is a lot of inexpensive DLC available for it, so you can pick your own fave songs/library. I found DC:S to be a bit lacking in the personality department, preferring JD's wild colors and layout, but it's got a legion of fans who swear by it. It's a lot more challenging in the motion detection, too - a bonus in my book.

** Edit: The link I posted is for the JustDanceNow app, but I meant the Just Dance Motion App (which has a QR link to download from, ingame). It's late :)

With 2015, you should be able to play:

On PS4
- with the Playstation Camera
- with the Move controller
- with your smartphone using a downloadable app

On XboxObe
- with Kinect 2
- with your smartphone using a downloadable app

Apparently camera recognition isn't that great on either platform. For XboxOne you should probably go with Dance Central?

On PS4, the camera recognition for 2014 was really bad, from what I've read. It may be better with 2015, but I haven't bought the game yet to try this out. I'm interested, but do wish there was a demo.

Don't forget Fantasia. Not exactly a dancing game, but not far from it either, and really great ! :)
I don't know about JD 2015, but I had been following the feedback about 2014 since it was the first game to use the PS Camera for full body tracking without the Move, and from what I gathered it worked ok for one person but was much less reliable for two. So if you intend to play alone it might be ok, even if Kinect is definitely the best solution for such games. For more players, you should check if they improved the software since last year.

If you want camera scoring, go for the Kinect version(On Xbox One). If you want to play on Playstation, do yourself a favour and get a Move controller or just play with your phone - works equally well, but personally I am always worried about throwing my phone and smashing something. The Ps camera scoring could not have been improved much more unfortunately, the depth resolution on that thing is horrible. The Xbox One version is the best if you care about camera scoring, Kinect 2 is fantastic at accurately recognizing players in this game. Personally I bought move controllers for the PS4 version and having lots of fun.

Step us this dude's game and get him to try Dance Central Spotlight :p

Anyway, no problem with the tracking on Just Dance Xbone, even with 4 people i never had any trouble
