...What the hell did I just watch? A lot of it seemed disturbing just for the sake of being disturbing. Any fellow Gaffers care to help me sense of it? I watched through the anime series about a month ago.

Now you're ready to watch 1.11 and 2.22 movies and really get your noggin in a knot! :D
Don't listen to this man, avoid rebuild for your own sanity!

Nah it's awesome. Back then, when I watched it on VHS. I didn't understand anything. But it was fun (I was like 12 btw)
I had to watch it like.... 30 times to finally get most of the movie. Granted, I watched it on english, and it isn't my mother language. And of course, internet wasn't even around here. So it was not an option to just google "wtf did i just watched+End of Evangelion".

If you wanna skip watching that much times the movie read

There's almost everything you need to know.

It's like this thread always pops out every few months. Then the haters come and say how this film sucks and those who like it are pretentious snobs. The more reasonable ones ask why so and so happened. Repeat and rinse.

Is EoE the awesome movie one with the army invading NERV? That was the first thing I ever saw of Evangellion. Imagine watching EoE with absolutely no context at all.

Haha, wow

Easily one of the most memorable movies I've ever seen. I remember the first time experiencing the last 30 minutes or so of it. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing, especially when Shinji finally realized what he wanted.

What is the difference between rebuild, EoE, and the series? What should I start on? what should i end on?

Rebuild is bad, Eva TV+EoE are masterpieces.

Eva TV -> EoE -> STOP

Don't worry, first time I watched it I also had no idea what was going on. A few rewatches didn't really help. All hail Rebuild of Evangelion.

I've never wanted a protagonist to die as much as Shinji in EoE. Can you even call someone a protagonist when they spend 75% of the film in a waking coma, stopping only to masturbate and cry?

This is one of my favorite movies ever. If Rebuild's ending isn't more fucked up than this one, it'll be a travesty.

OP - even if you don't understand what's going on or don't even want to begin to understand, it just stays with you for days. Let it marinate in your mind for a bit, then watch it again in a week or two. The whole thing had such a unique vibe, I would've loved to have seen it when it was in theaters back in 1997.

The series budget ran out and the last two episodes make no sense and consists mostly of slow panning shots of people sitting down in chairs with voice overs. Because of the fan backlash to the mega shitty ending, they made a film called "End of Evangelion", which replaced the confusing ending with an extremely brutal downer ending.

Rebuild of Evangelion is a remake of the series in the form of four feature length animated films instead of the 20 minute episodes. Only two parts are out.

Watch the series, then watch EoE, then watch rebuild.

Shut your damn mouth.

Nah he's 100% in the right there. Watching Rebuild is like watching an awful paired down and uninteresting version of the same events, why bother?

If the Rebuild series of movies ever actually puts out a good movie then I'd be happy enough to recommend it. Sadly they haven't achieved that so far.

You're watching a penguin show, what do you know about anything!

anyway, it's not awful and uninteresting. It's concise, more coherent, with some of the fat trimmed, and some damn pretty animation. It also manages to bring back more of that patented Evangelion wtf factor despite going over a lot of the same events. Also, the music is great.

They cut out about 5 hours of Shinji emo time, so that alone justifies them. Plus the end of 2 was insanity above the TV series.

They've done two of those actually. Both of which have been a lot more bearable to watch than the tv series. And I say this as a huge fan of the series.

We do, of course, have a fairly lengthy Evangelion 2.0 thread for those wishing to discuss and dissect the new movies!

lol, this is actually one of the DVD's I've had from netflix for like a year now. I should probably watch it...
Or just enjoy the awesome DVD menu.

I enjoy Rebuild as an alternate version of the events of Evangelion. I like that certain stuff has been moved around in the timeline. I won't make a final call of the Rebuild until we see all the films.

EoE is a superb film and a hell of a way to end a television series and the world.

EoE is the proper ending of the TV series.

Rebuild are the new movies which may be set in an alternate universe or time looping over again or something as there are hints to this but we dont know yet.

Rebuild is worth it just to see EVA-01 doing its usual Angel-bashing fest while "Kyou no hi wa sayonara" is playing. Truly disturbing.
I was so afraid that they were going to kill Asuka when the song ended with "Mata au hi made".
